Can we have a thread about games from Europe?

>People in my country wouldn't stop fapping about the so called Golden era of Spanish software
>Finally get into it
>All the games play like shit
>Nothing comes slighly close to the best stuff from France, UK or Germany
Were local games overhyped in your country too? Fucking pic related is considered a masterpiece here.

Hover Bovver GOTY every year.

At least your country had a local scene
Mine just ate whatever shit the dumb brits made

I believe people who refer to good Spanish games mean stuff like La Abadia Del Crimen. http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=222..

Looking back at the old home computer scenes in Europe many of them kinda had this "well fuck you, we don't need those fancy arcade games from Japan and America, we got... we got... Manic Miner and Hunchback!" feel to them. Like they didn't really know what actual good games are supposed to be like.

This is truly the greatest game ever from Finland. Even the Max Paynes and Death Rally are shit compared to this.

Every country had the problem that 90% of developers were making shit that barely resembled games. Even Japan has a lot of shovelware, it just never got brought over.
The good developers have always been in the minority, and Europe still had some great games like Turrican, X-Com, and Lemmings.

Literally a The Great Escape clone. Good if you're into that kind of stuff, but doesn't really deserve the hype.

Alfonso Azpiri did the box art for that game.

Here is an illustration he did for Dark Souls II, and came as an alternative cover in the Spanish Limited Edition.

Livingstone, Supongo? was from Spain. It`s about pole jumping to death.

It was difficult to the point of being almost unplayable, like 90% of Spanish soft.

Simulmondo back in the days was pretty famous here, and their games were shitty turds, but they still sold fucktons of copies because of the licenses from Bonelli Editore.
On the other hand Milestone did a pretty damn good job with the Screamer series (Screamer2 and Screamer Rally were fucking amazing and the best arcade DOS racing game), pity they fell into the oblivion after.
There was also the NAPS team that developed neat games for Amiga, seems like European developers mainly focused on home pc leaving consoles untouched.
By the way I really really like the games from the ZX Spectrum era, despite the clunky controls there were some pretty damn good ideas and the graphics that were just a step above the black and white were really charming

Yeah, pretty much. We made a game for Megadrive tho, or should I say EA ported one of our games there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJvhUTT6UHM

But then I see stuff like Turrican or Another World and can't help but laugh at the whole "Golden era of Spanish software" and how people actually buy that story.

Based on a popular Finnish comedy movie series, this C64 game is pretty hard. I remember that me and my friend who owned it could never beat level 1 as kids.

Svea Rike was the shit while teaching history.

History, of course, being "a Swedish house of nobles takes over all of Sweden, then all of Finland, then a bunch of other places, then ruling the known world" since it's a very easy game.

Sequels were a lot harder though.

Finland had a fantastic indie scene in the 90's. Countless hours were spent playing games like Triplane Turmoil, Wings and Wham!, Tappo 2, Liero, Molez, Areena series and many others. New derivatives were always popping up. The scene even carried over to non-retro 2000's. I especially enjoyed IVAN and Notrium.

I don't think the games were generally overhyped at all, the best ones got the attention they deserved. We had some excellent local magazines that did a great job promoting domestic and other freeware and shareware games by featuring them on their websites daily, and collecting the cream of the crop into annual CDs for subscribers.

Realms of Arkania is overrated but not necessarily because it's German.

I remember having an Opera Soft collection for PC when I was a kid.

Honestly, I had fun with the game although they were already old when I played them.

La Abadia del Crimen (basically The Name of the Rose: the video game), Livingstone Supongo, Mot, Mundial Futbol, Mithos and many others.

cool, I love his art

Opera Soft were bastards when it comes to difficulty. I finished Livingstone, Supongo, but only because if you let the game by itself in the menu, it would run an attract mode that was 95% the game, so I just memorize every jump and every screen. Even Last Mission was more playable.

Dinamic could be like that too. Game Over is filled with unavoidable attacks.

Well it depends what computer you had in the 80's. I had an Amstrad CPC, and there was no Turrican or Another World. A lot of the games were very basic ones, although there were also some real gems like Bruce Lee and Gryzor. So in that context, the spanish games that were any good really did stand out. Just some examples:
http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/a/index2.html#after_the_war
http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/a/index5.html#amc
http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/c/index.html#capitan_trueno
http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/g/index2.html#game_over
http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/w/index2.html#west_bank

If you want to really experience their games, go for the CPC version instead of IBM PC with CGA graphics and only beepter. It makes a really big difference...
