I mean, the cases could be the same exact dimensions ad you'd still be able to figure out what format it is, I mean, it's right there on the spine for both NTSC and PAL. So surely, that can't be the reason, can it?

Well, this way you can fit the fat-ass manuals that often came here in few languages. And in case of, let's say, Soul Calibur, you couldn't really fit it in standard CD case. Also, those are harder to pirate I think.

I lack the necessary aptitude to confirm or deny that claim.

It DOES, however, make sense that the manuals are fat due to the multitude of languages it comes in.

That by itself says a lot.

How do pal games compare with ntsc? I have both ntsc and pal playstations but is it worth paying more for ntsc copies when the price difference is very small? For some reason pal sellers always like to overprice their games.

Generally speaking, pal games run at 50hz and ntsc runs at 60hz. Also, some games were only released in PAL, but far more were exclusive to NTSC. Game covers are different too. G-Darius is sexy.
If you're going to be playing them, get NTSC games.

Europe basically got a release of the initial Japanese version, which comes with exactly that, same cover and all. Meanwhile in the US we got the junky cover, no thick dual-disc case, no artbook, and the Dracula Collection soundtrack that came with the game in every other region you could only get if you pre-ordered it from EB or some shit.

The NTSC one on the left there is the Greatest Hits reprint. The original copies were matted black with yellow lettering. Still lousy, but not as bad as the shiny silver that plagued all the GH releases.

Didn't know the Euro disc had black and white art, though. I only have the US and Japanese copies. The JP disc is in full color. Still leaps and bounds better than the US one, either way.

Europe usually has less offending covers than North America, their front cover branding is cooler, silver label is cooler than green label.

North America has better spine label font and the hinge is transparent with a graphic underneath, which is the best part.

OK seriously guyss, i know PAL isnt perfect for PS1 but its no way as horrible as some posters here are making it out to be. In fact in RE3 i hated the way Jill ran too fast in the NTSC version, in the PAl version she runs more like youd expect a human being too.
