with Enhanced Edition releasing recently, how about a System Shock thread?

Discuss both games, go crazy fighting over which one is the best.

replaying 2 and I'm really annoyed by how the map and note system takes some steps back compared to 1.

I lasted about an hour in the second game but I'm really liking the first one. Also, this weapon seems really OP.

The game went from great to 10/10 when I had the laser rapier and the booster or whatever it was. Rollerskating down corridors chopping everything to bits while jammin' to that perfect soundtrack was phenomenal.

>> No.2708951

That's because it is.
The Laser Rapier can carry you through almost the entire game except for maybe some parts of floor 9.

>> No.2709061

So, how intuitive are the controls for the Enhanced Edition? I'm thinking of buying it once the pay check is in.

Say, are there some balance mods for SS2? I have it on Steam, and after the basic visual modding I'd like to apply something that'd make repair not as useless as everyone says it is.

>> No.2709084

>>2708883
the range on melee weapons is pretty generous, but it also seems fair? The Rapier's on the same floor as the fucking invisible mutants so the game clearly wants you to use it.

>> No.2709550

>I'd like to apply something that'd make repair not as useless
Like, how are you even plan on doing so?
Thing is, you don't need Repair, because there are not much situations for it to be useful.

>Weapon jammed? Find another one and maintain it so it won't happen again.

>There are just handful of busted replicators and in most of them there is nothing special.

>Fucked up hacking something and broke it? Don't risk it happening again.

The only way I see to make Repair more useful would be giving player more things to repair.

Also, there are those auto-repair things instead.

Is there even benefit of having higher repair skill?
Besides making actual repair easier, that is.

>So, how intuitive are the controls for the Enhanced Edition?
Movement is pretty standard. Q switches weapons and E switches between mouselook and cursor modes. You need to use cursor mode for stuff like reloading your weapons (the ammo system is a bit more complicated than other games) and picking up items (you have to drop them in your inventory). The weirdest part is probably standing, crouching, and crawling, bound to R, F, and V respectively. Sadly the only way to jump directly to a particular weapon is by clicking on its name in the inventory screen; the number keys don't work for this. You can toggle "full screen" mode (UI overlays the screen instead of constricting it) with the 2 key.

you take advantage of a lot of enemies by going at them with the wrench, you can get them to just keep backing away and never attack, or like the rickenvacker sentries their attacks will miss at point blank.

Anyone who pays for games that don't benefit the devs anymore is a fucking faggot.

That being said, how do I last on the later levels of SS1? I'm nearing the end and the giant red cyborgs with justfuckmyshitup.exe installed on their perfectly accurate hitscan guns are destroying me. I'm running low on meds and I can't seem to find a way to kill them without being hit - the rapier can hit from around corners, but anything ranged I always get hit before they do.

Yes, I'm leaning as little as possible out and yes I'm firing instantly.

>> No.2709846

>>2709693
Depends on the difficulty.
if you know what psi powers invest into - there are some improving wrench and gunplay greatly- you shouldn't have too big of a problem. Lack of rifle might be something to worry about tho.

If were talking about highest difficulty, its basically wrenchfest. All wrench, every day, dancin with wrenches. And psi Adrenalin Overproduction makes your wrench deadly for a few, so it should be great asset. As long as you know how to wrench.

tl;dr go for it.

I once did a wrench+psionics playthrough with no other weapons, on normal difficulty.

If you're good with the wrench, it'll get you through most enemies; if you know where to get psi hypos cost-efficiently, projected cryokinesis and pyrokinesis become spammable and can replace your need for firearms. I liked being able to forgo maintenance entirely. Robotic enemies can be a pain in the ass however, since psionic projectiles are much less effective than bullets against them. In fact, I recall dying many times against cyborg assassins.

It was fun, I recommend going for it if you've already played through the game normally. The challenge probably ramps up significantly on higher difficulty levels, since you get less modules to play around with and can afford much fewer psi hypos from replicators.

I found using the crouch and leaning functions around corners dramatically decreases their hit rate against you. I think its something deliberately coded into the game.

Use your best weapons (RF-07 Skorpion can chew through anything pretty quickly) and don't forget about shields.

Another option is to drop an berserk and react patch. Equip your roller skates and laser rapier and rush the enemy. Laser rapier + berserk one shots everything except bosses.

Biggest difference original had no mouselook. It was released only a few months after doom so people where still experimenting with the FPS control system.
Enhanced edition changed it to something more like the WASD setup we use now.

In the original mouse was used to interact with HUD and screen (like shooting and looting things). All move/look is done via the keyboard. (ASDX for tank like movement, QWE for leaning, TGB for look up/down, YHN for 3 levels of crouching and ZC for strafe)

Yeah it was pretty ridiculous, but had some advantages. Move/Look can be done entirely with one hand. You could simultaneously loot bodies, reload and other interactions while still having full control of movement. Movement is still gonna be sluggish but if you play it slowly and use the leaning and shield functions in fights its not too bad. When I first finished the game back in 2010 I did it entirely using the original control scheme and more or less got used to it by the end of the game.

Just beat SS2 for the first time after ~10 hours of gameplay on normal.

I kind of overestimated the difficulty of the game. I wanted to go PSI, but because of the resource scarcity at the beginning had to fan out a bit. So at the end, I was pretty good at both Standard and Energy weapons, despite having only ever used the pistols for both. Mostly I just meleed enemies with the energy sabre while also throwing in some buffs for the tough enemies.

At the end aside from weapons, each stat save for CYB (2) and PSI (6) had 5, same goes for Maintenance and Hacking.
