My first Pokemon game, the first game that I ever bought with my own money, and for the first system that I'd ever bought with my own money. Felt good, mon.

The most 'live' feeling Pokemon game ever.

Use to think a Pokemon rpg like that was very near.

The only good Pokemon game

>> No.2707085

Blue for nostalgia.
Silver is my straight up favourite though.

>> No.2707103

None of the Pokemon games that are /vr/ related are any good sadly.
Gen 1 is just a broken mess and the glitches are the only fun part.
Gen 2 has 2 regions, one of which is just bland with not much to do and the other is just 8 gym leader fights and that's it.

>> No.2707112

>>2706405
That's my favorite too. I was a pokemon fan for quite a long time and enjoyed them all, but G/S and especially Crystal hit a real sweet spot.

>> No.2707117

Probably Pokemon Red for nostalgia. Not the best game, but never really cared about anything other than the orignal 150. They seem more classic and less weird than what followed.

>> No.2707212

>>2706405
Crystal's pretty cool, but honestly I like Gold better.

That said, I am going to play the Pokemon TCG game sometime in the near future, so I'll see how much I like that.

Is Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald considered retro? I know they get a ton of hate but I just love them. I played through pokemon from gen 1 to the last games but I just keep liking gen 3 to any gen. Also I just got Omega Ruby for my 3DS to see how it goes

Not quite, but it's probably fine. My only real disappointment with RSE was the removal of day and night, I really missed that. Otherwise I thought it was a great entry in the series.

sorry that i played actual good games like Platinum, Black 1&2 and realized how bad Gen 1&2 games are compared to them.

>> No.2707245

>>2707238
There are single player and multiplayer experiences in the games. You don't necessarily have to be hardcore into EVs and IVs and competing and whatnot to appreciate the one player aspect.

>> No.2707247

>>2707238
it's about team building and using your favorites to have fun atleast for me.

Too bad Gen 1 and 2 stop that considering most Pokemon suck ass and can't even use their stab moves properly because no Physical/Special split.

>> No.2707248

>>2707243
Those games aren't retro and therefore aren't up for detailed discussion on this board. If you don't like older Pokemon games, then maybe this thread isn't for you.

>> No.2707253

>>2707245
My point was more that the single player aspect of all the Pokemons has never been great. You can take your started and the first few random pokes you come across and easily steamroll the game with them if you want.

Types, team balance and strategy barely enter into the equation in the single player game. It's in making teams for vs battles that it really shines. Gen 2 is great for that aspect.

I will say that the first game does have some serious balance issues and has ultimately not aged great. But it's also a gameboy game from 1995, and blew virtually every other GB game out of the water at the time.

Gold/Silver/Crystal though, those are still fantastic. I don't understand liking later Pokemons but not them. But if that's how you feel then more power to you.

>> No.2707257

>>2707247
>because no Physical/Special split.
That's only in the first game, it's changed in GSC.

Also the GBA remakes of red and green are pretty great.

>> No.2707267

>>2707257
i meant the Physical/Special split that doesn't make it so that move being Physical/Special being decided by the type.
Like you couldn't have Water, Dark, Fire etc being physical moves before Gen 4 which makes a lot of Pokemon pretty bad.

>> No.2707286

>>2707267
I see what you mean now. That was a good addition, but I think the games still hold up without that. Though I will say that I think the GBA and DS remakes of the first two gens are better than the originals, GSC remains my favorite entry in the series.

It looks like we have come to the series from different angles though. I started playing with the first one when it came out and was amazed by it. Then the games steadily got better in many ways over time. I can see starting later and going back not seeming as impressive.

>> No.2707327

>>2707248

Except that's exactly what he said.

Pokemon is a series where the mechanics have been steadily improving since Gen 1. The old games are fine on their own, but the modern games simply play better. Nothing to get all bent out of shape about.

>> No.2707334

>>2707236
I think the tradeoff of day/night cycle for a more vivid color palette was worth it.

both games look great, they just set out to do different things with their visuals.

>> No.2707341

>>2707334
Well it was bound to have a larger colour palette just because it was on the GBA already. I liked the addition of weather, but I missed the night time and events based on days of the week.

>> No.2707348

>>2707327
He said
>None of the Pokemon games that are /vr/ related are any good sadly.
Which is a fine opinion to have, but why bother coming into a thread where you don't like either of the actual retro entries in the series?

Someone coming into the Castlevania threads saying they only like the 3D games would meet a similar reaction.

Pretty much this, except Red for me.

Love Gen 1 and 2 because of nostalgia reasons. I also had a lot of fun with Emerald, Platinum, B&W 1 and 2 and Y but they'll never be the same for me. I'll apparently never be able to enjoy the Hoenn region though.

GSC were the games that introduced Go Ichinose as an addition to Gamefreak's music team, and he's one of my favorite composers in the industry. Too bad they haven't been taking advantage of his talents recently.

For the people who say that they like first and second gen the best, do you go back and replay them? How do you deal with the extremely slow speed and the constant need for saves? You would have an argument if the remakes were awful, but they aren't and in firered's case, it's strictly better than the gameboy original. Are you a masochist?

>> No.2710565

>>2710554
They're not my personal favorite games in the series, but I do love them a lot, and I'll say that I've never had a problem with the lack of running shoes or battle speed at all. Maybe it's because I've played them so many times, but it just feels natural to me. The only thing that really bothers me is saving whenever I change a box, but most of the time when I run through the game I'm not catching a lot of pokemon anyways. They're certainly not perfect, but I do prefer them in some ways to their remakes, especially for their soundtracks.

Continues to be one of the most inspiring tracks I've heard in a video game. It makes you feel like you can take on the world, which really symbolizes the point in the game you hear it.

The biggest reason I play the originals as opposed to the remakes (which I still enjoy) is the style. It's definitely nostalgia goggles, but I like the sprites in the game boy games, and I think at times the remixed versions of the songs can get a little busy.

What? Compared to future games, walking speed is quite fast. And once you get the bike there's nothing slow about moving.

Again, what? Do you mean for changing PC boxes and trading? Saving takes like 10 seconds.

Crystal is the best pokemon game, but that's because the rest are fairly shitty as single player JRPGs. Gen 5 comes close, though.

>Not liking Pokemon Stadium
It's the only game I could play with my hand was broken for a bit, but I really just loved this game because it just made it feel Pokemon came to life. Just the idle animations and the fact that used some actual animal noises for some Pokemon, to the way Pokemon fell over when they fainted, it all just felt real. Not only that, but every move worked as intended.

>muh Colosseum
The only way this game different was that you could walk around and talk to people for 3 minutes about bullshit. Not only that, but the game was unbearable with the shadow heart bullshit.

>muh Snap
It was like riding a ride at Disney Land than an actual game. Not only that, but the controls just feel bad.
