Ridge Racer Revolution is my favorite racing game of all time.
The course design is fantastic. The handling is like nothing else, really nice feeling drifts and turning.
The music is fun and gets you pumped. The visuals are solid, really nails the whole "fantasy island" atmosphere.
Only issue is that it's got three unique tracks (each with a rather large shared portion), and 6 courses in total (forward and backward, and they actually are pretty different feeling the reverse way).

The other Ridge Racer games are pretty wonderful too, but the drifting isn't as nice in the others. Rage is slick as fuck though, and R4 looks and sounds amazing.
I still keep coming back to Revolution more.

>>2703280
actually played that recently
who the fuck thought the CPU being able to fucking use items infinitely was a good idea

Also, I'm increasingly certain that I hate the track design. I have no idea what happened, this and F-Zero were the two games I played most on my SNES as a kid.

at least F-Zero is still amazing, even if it's still got some silly-ass issues (it doesn't track the position of anything not on screen, so opponent cars will always be behind you no matter how fast you go)

>>2703675
Hang-On on SMS is fun.
Super Hang-On is amazing. Genesis version isn't ideal, but passable. There's an amazing port for the 3DS and it's pretty much the only thing I've played on the machine for the last year. Failing that, use MAME.

High level play in R4 has a lot of depth to it, the issue is the game basically never asks you to play anywhere near that level unless you try to get the DRT nightmare with a class 3 car.

I really didn't like how revolution made you block cars to win the harder races. That and to me it never really felt right, coming from the later games and not playing on some weird analogue controller. Looks dope tho.

The game was targeting IBM compatible 8086 (4.77MHz) and 286.

>At the time, many people still had 4.77 MHz 8088 PC's, the 80286 based AT machines were fairly new, and the smoking hot top-end machines were 25 Mhz386's - with EGA graphics! Remember that flight simulators were considered good at the time if they got frame rates above 8-10 fps. I felt it was important to have the highest frame rate possible, and I was confident that we could get up to 15 fps sustained! I also wanted to have a full field of 33 cars (player plus 32 AI cars), since this was Indy. So everything was written in assembly language, for speed. Space was also at a premium, since we couldn't use more than about 570K of RAM. Writing the physics in assembler, using fixed-point math, was one large challenge. Another was creating a graphics database that looked like the speedway, but used no more than about 30 polygons per frame! (We use that many polys in a tire, today.) The other main challenge was getting the CPU to drive 32 AI cars without slowing to a crawl.

double dipping? Eden has been doing V-Rally, and it was called just that. However, the european publisher is Infogrames, which owned the Test Drive IP and used it to pull the audience. The US version is published by Electronic Arts, who likely insisted on slapping the NFS badge on it.
In other words, the only entities you can blame here, are the publishers. And if you're extra crazy, you can thank them, because it was either slapping random IP on it, or not publishing this game at all.

All RR are time trial racers, there isn't such a huge difference after all. I can see where you're looking at though, R4 is too "perfect" in the sense you can't do wrong as the grip cars are glued in the road and the drifts are absolutely controllable, in RR and RRR you can JUST by spinning your car or losing control during a drift.

It's subjective, I suppose. For me all the game-only tracks felt like they were made for the player and effects. Long straights, few simple turns, and occasionally a special effect or two, that clearly looked as if the whole track only existed because of it. The mentioned tracks are the only exception, because of movie restrictions

It baffles me how some devs shat racers with retarded tier unplayable controls years after Sega Rally or Ridge Racer. >Damn this game was fun.

Game designers, especially racing game designers: read this fucking statement right there. Read it, over and over, until you understand it. We don't give a damn how realistic your entry level sim engines are, how realistic the water flows off the digital windshield, or how many car makers you paid to put their cars in your game. We want FUN racing games. Straight up manic speed, insanity. hilarious destruction is optional but welcome. Look at half the games in this thread and you will see they are NOT SERIOUS. Stunts is NOT SERIOUS. Excite Bike is NOT SERIOUS. wipEout, Sega Rally, Ignition, Screamer, you name it. They are NOT SERIOUS. Rollcage is everything but serious. We love these games. Notice the pattern, learn from it.
Understand also, that not serious does not mean easy or careless. All of these games are polished and do what they do with highest quality. Most of these games are brutally difficult in their final stages, and that's fine. We can have fun while being challenged, and we don't need realistic touring cars. We had our fix. Get creative again, you bastards.

Formula Fusion, Neo Fast Racing and "wipeout clone" don't strike me as very creative. More like derivatives of one particular game/style. Distance looked promising in the proof of concept demo thing. No idea if they can maintain that momentum. First time I heard of GRIP. Looks to be based on Rollcage. We'll see where it goes, I guess.

Frankly though, clones aren't the way to go. If I want to play wipEout, I can do that already. Same with Rollcage, and even Jet Moto.
Games like wipEout, Star Wars Racer and F-Zero proved how even limitting yourself to one particular mode of transportation (anti gravity, more or less), you can end up with vastly different games, and we know from the late 90s that the arcade racer genre alone had so many varied approaches to going fast. Got to experiment, you know? Designers need that "wouldn't it be cool if" mentality and just do it.

Well it very clearly says it takes full inspiration from the rollcage games, and even has former rollcage devs working on it. One of them I believe is the codemonkey dude who made rollcage redux and rollcage stage II extreme edition, both of which are ports of the 2 games designed to work perfectly for modern systems.
>>2713293
I know they aren't trying to be very original but I personally think it's better than nothing. It's either this or the as the anon said above, more sim games and semi-sim NFS games, Chances are half of these games won't release anyways. Formula Fusion itself is heading into vaporware territory.
Maybe once AG racing proves itself to be stable in today's market will we get some more original titles.

I remember the first time I played Virtua Racing. It was really impressive seeing how smooth it was rotating the câmera (or VR Views), but I felt it a bit slow.

Then years later, I met this game. Ace Driver. Only one track but... God damn, smooth, good sense of speed and weight, tight controls, good feedback on steering wheel.

I understand people having fond memories from console racing games, but the arcade ones from the 90s felt really special.
Most of them (especially Sega cabinets) had a sub-woofer under the seat, so the bass did quite a good job replicating the feeling of the car engine. The force feedback on the steering wheel was often way stronger than the average console accessory - and it could actually hurt younger players - as hardcore as it could get.

It's hard to tell because both are a framerate mess on native hardware even though both are unlocked FPS. The PS2 holds 60FPS better because it was always running a lower internal resolution than the DC version but man did that game chunk up.

So i've got MAME and want to play some colorful 3D racing from the arcade machines. What should i pick? Are there some essentials that behave well when emulated? There were literally no machines around during my childhood so i dont know any and the single one i played was Cruisin'USA to test the emulator. Also, can you suggest any retro (or not) PC title with that kind of arcade machine spirit? Only one i can think about besides ports are Screamer 1.

Not exactly racing, but close enough: you must, no excuses, you must play OutRun. The game's a legend, and that status is fully justified

>Only one i can think about besides ports are Screamer 1.
You're sadly entirely correct. Screamer went all out on the arcade feel. There are games shooting in a similar direction, like Whiplash, but only Screamer really pins that thing down perfectly. Also Screamer 2 and Rally.
For the latter 2, if you use a glide wrapper, you can even get some very nice visuals

Good stuff, i played it sometime ago, but way to grimdark for the request and - strangely - way too realistic.
>H.A.V.E a nice day
That was the deal. Beat it three or four times back in the day. The gameplay was simple but really addictive, Impala league was my favorite. Also it was among the first legally released titles in Russia, the publisher, Amber, did a really good job localizing it, it ran like charm on 3 year old PCs and the price for jewel version were more than affordable - the game was for the forming russian market just what doctor ordered.

Thanks everybody, but what about ROMs to emulate?

Crusin' USA and World emulates fine in MAME ever since they figured the U64 board hardware. It's one of the only ones that does.

The original game had a shit framerate even on the arcade board so expect shitty performance.

I did emulate the arcade one. It runs flawlessly but you will not have much fun with a keyboard. When I tried it, the controls felt terribly laggy, because of the way the analog controls map to the keyboard. Like it takes time for the analog steering wheel to re-center, when you release a key. Instead I play it with a 360 controller, which works flawlessly. Of course a wheel would be ideal, but joystick or thumbstick are a good second option. Avoid the keyboard, if you can.

if your previous experience with OutRun was just 2006, be prepared for a bit of a surprise. OutRun is much harder than 2006 ever wished to be. It's also much more focused. You only got the OutRun mode, and nothing else. But it'll take you a few trials to see even just one goal,

You don't have to use MAME. There's a namco system whatever emulator for ridge racer, and a model 2 and model 3 emulators although they are quite buggy.
Everything else SEGA should work on Demul.
