Alright, /vr/gins.
I'm gonna start collecting for PlayStation. I've slept on it so much because I was always so into the Nintendo and Sega side of the retro spectrum.
What are some obscure essentials that I'll need to pick up?
In other words, don't fucking tell me Final Fantasy.

I dont like jrpgs, and dont see much point in arcade ports when Mame and GGPO exist.
So, this is my list of PS1 platformers and action adventure games.

-the 3 Crash Bandicoot games
-the 3 Spyro games
-Mega Man X 4
-The 2 Tomba games
-Rayman. Rayman 2 is perhaps the best 3d platformer after Mario 64, but the n64, dreamcast and playstation 2 versions are better than the Playstation 1 version.
-Klonoa
-Castlevania Symphony of the dark
-The first Tenchu game
-The Resident Evil games
-Ape Escape
-The Oddworld games
-The Jumpin Flash games
-Metal Gear Solid

These shmups are also must plays
Einhander
Gradius Gaiden
R Type Delta

It's also the best one on the system, but OP specifically said not to mention it.

My favorite PS1 games that are a bit off the beaten path:

Armored Core - any of the 3 games are great and they're all cheap. Huge mechs that you customize (extensively) and take on missions/fight other mechs in the arena. Very deep games with lots of parts and guns to choose from. You can make anything from a classic sword and rifle gundam to a robot tank with giant ordnance. If you like mechs at all you will love these games.

Megaman Legends- Really solid adventure game, pre-OOT so it controls a bit stiff but is very playable. Has amazing art direction, solid voice acting (for a ps1 game at least) and tons of character.

Monster Rancher 2- the best monster-raising game I've ever played. Lets you raise monsters off of cd's you have lying around. You can also combine monsters to make new ones, and there's tons of secrets to unlock. The gameplay can get repetitive so look it up and see if its your cup of tea.

Brave Fencer Musashi- Another great action-adventure, this one is from Square and has some rpg elements. You have the ability to copy moves from enemies ala Kirby, and the gameplay is fun. It's got some cringeworthy voice acting, but lots of charm to make up for it.

Vigilante 8: Second Offense- Car combat game, like Twisted Metal but better in every way. Cooler cars, better weapons, better levels, MUCH better music. The whole game has a killer 70's vibe, it's tons of fun.

Bushido Blade 2- Another great one from Square, one of my favorite fighting games but very different than mainstream fighters. You fight with swords/spears and there are 1 hit kills. Not every hit will kill, some will only wound you (such as making you unable to use one of your arms). Fights are more about timing your strikes and using the correct stance rather than button mashing. One of the tensest games I've ever played, great in 2 player or against the AI.

Just posting to second Valkyrie Profile. Vagrant's Story is also quite good, but fuck that forest level, I got stuck there for a long time when I was a kid

I wanna hook up my ps1 to this tiny tv. What would be the appropriate adapter and will it even work?
