Alright /vr/.

So my college campus has a "Retro gamers" club, and they're about as snooty as the music and performing arts clubs, and claim to know everything about video games.

I decided to test this and paid them a visit today.

Out of the 69 members, 37 people in the room,
responded when I asked if they considered themselves "Knowledgeable on retro video game characters" And they all said yes.

I created this little 12 character survey to see results.. I have to say I'm rather disappointed with them.

I knew the dude was from Skies of Arcadia, but Ive never played it. Ristar, Vectorman, and Dynamite Heady were easy, but I've never gotten that far in Gunstar Heroes and while I knew he was probably from that I didnt know his name.

Jesus Christ OP, a bunch of people who like old games were greatly familiar with games from Nintendo, an incredibly prolific game company to this day?
It's not even odd for someone to have grown up with one console per generation (if they're lucky), and they'd typically stick with the brand they already know.

Someone who had an NES and couldn't afford much else isn't unlikely to move on to the SNES, just as someone with a Megadrive would probably move on to a Genesis, kids didn't have a shitton of money by themselves and you could probably not convince your parents to get you multiple consoles per generation (bar maybe a portable), unless your parents were well off and could afford to splurge.
So they're limited in their choices, they figure it's safe to stick with their Nintendo/Sega.

Well you should definitively do something about that, even if it's just Super Castlevania and Symphony Of The Night. Hell, if they like Metroid they'd probably even like the Gameboy Advance titles.

You should also tell them that a game being heavily inspired by another isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Look, I'll try to keep this as civil as possible and not try to hurt anyone's feelings.

I myself recognize half of the characters only from reading magazines or browsing internet or some such without having played the games. You don't really have to be a completionist in this case. It's not like you have to read every last line of every book, it's simply about knowing the characters from having watched videos of the game or having played them for a couple minutes or hours for example. I haven't played half the games in the OP, but I still knew most of the characters from the games I haven't played (like Klonoa... I feel bad that I still haven't played that game). All the games in the OP are pretty highly-acclaimed and beloved, so they're all worth playing, they're not forgettable mediocre games.

Opinions, I didn't like Dynamite Headdy, Valis never came out in my country and when I played the series a year ago it was very undewhelming and not particularly memorable either outside of Valis III which is a pretty good platformer, Gunstar Heroes is very overrated too.

Fact is you guys still miss the point of the problem, the people who are really knowledgeable of a certain topic are rarely found in a club, even less so for college clubs, they are nerds in the old sense of the word and are most likely pretty antisocial and talk about that stuff in small selected circles instead of school clubs, being surprised or making smug comments about it is useless.

And for the umpteenth time, if you're so triggered by people being posers or wannabees you don't rant about it on the internet, you fucking do something if that really irritates you, you fucking educate them to at least try to make the situation less tragic, doing anything else is hypocritical since you'll just show how much of an elitist asshole you are by willingly not changing the status quo and keeping all the good stuff to yourself and letting people like these continue to spread ignorance and low level of content.
The vast majority of people have subpar culture even in the things they profess to like, young people even more so, I too said the same when I was 16, I thought I played lots of videogames when I was just really playing on he tip of the iceberg, and I feel thankful to all the people, even here on 4chan, that made me discover a lot of neat stuff.

You're implying implications which were never implied, my friend.

I never said they didn't have the means to explore Sega's back catalogue, I said they might not have the interest.

Kids today grew up with Sony or Nintendo consoles, perhaps they're more interested in exploring their back catalogues first. And there's plenty to explore in there before you move onto Sega.

I mean I wouldn't have got Evil Otto had I not chanced across a cheap 2600 about a year back which spurred me on to explore its catalogue. Before that I had no real interest in exploring Atari consoles or early arcade games, even though I could have easily done so via the internet.

Perhaps their idea of indulging in their hobby is actually playing games rather than reading hardcore gaming 101.

And of course even if they do like to read and watch videos, perhaps their reading and viewing focuses more on what interests them. I mean I spend far more time reading about Megadrive games than SNES games, that's just where my passion lies.

As a result I would have done pretty well in this quiz, but if you did a similar one with focus on Nintendo consoles then I probably wouldn't do nearly as well.

Why should I have done so? I've concentrated on Japanese computers and RPGs. As such I'm familiar with Valis but I don't see how I could have encountered the others beyond seeing them mentioned here. I'm not going to play every MD game out there just because some others do.
