Anyone tried SoTN Hardtype? Is it any good?

www.insanedifficulty.com/board/index.php?/topic/5587-castlevania-symphony-of-the-night-hardtype-v22/

Also, can it be run on actual PS1/PSOne hardware? If so, how? I tried and failed.

SoTN thread to beat SM thread (to death)?

NTSC-J/Pal cover is best cover.

It seemed to work for me, but I'm using a PS2 debugging station to play burned discs. All I did was rip the ISO from my copy of SotN, patch it, and burn the patched ISO. It booted up no problem. I used ImgBurn to rip/burn the ISO.

TY. At least i know it can be done. I tried creating an iso from a set of cue and bins with imgburn, then patching that and burning it. Failed nicely.

Might depend on the original image, I guess. I'll give it another shot. Test the unpatched iso on EPSXE first and then burn that and stuff.

I have a PAL PSOne, chipped with the 6-wire onechip, so it won't handle stealth originals from NTSC/J regions. Anyone know what that kind of failure would look like, just in case?

Odd 'tude, dude. Nothing is perfect, and the original still exists if you seriously need to go around using weapons like chrissaegrim and can't handle the game without them...

I should articulate that a little better and say the game is hall-of-fame material, but the one universal criticism is its lack of difficulty. I'd prefer LandonRay had left all the content in, TBH, because i can choose not to use it, but even so i appreciate his efforts.

This is why hardtype mods are -always- shit.

They go way, way too fucking far.

They could've just changed Crissaegrim to Korean MMO levels of drop rate to discourage farming. But no, they just remove it entirely.

Its always the same. They remove Carlie's Healing spell in SD3 during her first class rendering her completely useless, where as in a hard type mod she may actually be a valid fucking option as a healer.

They make Zelda games like Parallel Towers stupid as fuck because they require Bomb jumping instead of having actually difficult puzzles.

I'd take a good game, thats a little too easy, over shit like that any day. You can always just self-impose a challenge on yourself.

What, removing three OP weapons from a list of hundreds? Again, i'd prefer they were left in, but labelling that going "way, way too far" seems a more serious case of same :)

I've not really played a lot of other mods, so perhaps need a better way to benchmark.

It's a good hack rarely, even made me discover things I never knew about the game, like enemy (especially bosses) animations and moves I had never seen cause they'd usually die too soon.

The spellcost should have been increased though. You can still spam your way through the game that way.

I just wish this was for the superior Saturn verison instead...

this. if you have the ability to edit equip's stats, why not balance the broken shit instead of removing it? crissaegrim would be fine with low attack with that attack speed. he also went as far to make galgamoth's lightning non-elemental which ruins the player's option to prepare equip for the battle.

I wish they'd just fucking translate that already.

Just the menus and weapon titles, so I don't need a shift-jis weapon guide open every time I play the game.

Your problem might be that you are trying to run an NTSC version using PAL hardware. It also seems like the patch is only compatible with the NTSC-U version of the game.

Carlie and Angela were actually the strongest characters are CC at one point in the hardtype. And they still have the advantage of being incredibly self sufficient compared to other characters.

What happened to them is pretty light compared to Kevin.

>> No.2697916

>>2697768
The problem with balancing things is that chances are they either turn out too strong or the complete opposite. Especially when it comes to things like the Criss. Which is why most people simply opt for removing the elements instead of leaving them in and then balance from there such as the Calculator in T.

Brave New World is one of the few hacks that got balancing down and it still has its fair share of neat and fining to do.

As someone who's experimented with making balance patches and hardtypes its really not as easy as some people might think.

Someone should do that with the latter. Doing it with the former sounds needlessly complicated and might as well be creating the game from the ground up. You do have Richter though.

>> No.2698253

>>2697919
That will run into the same problem as every other difficulty rebalancing patch for SotN. Even if you do balance out the stats the boss patterns are still too easily loopable and predictable, it's specially evident when refighting bosses and enemies that showed up in Rondo of Blood first, how much tamer their AI behaves in SotN in comparison. And even then Alucard still has spells with invincibility frames and equipment abilities that break the game no matter how much you try to "fix" the challenge.

Worked 2nd time round. I just patched the bin file i had - didn't even realise you could do that. Then ignored the heap of miscompares imgburn tossed up when verifying.

Thanks for the info, and the encouragement, if i can call it that.

I'd have loved to see Crissaegrim with lower stats. Might still have been OP with that range. Still there's the nerfed yasutsuna and the holbein daggers and stuff.

I know, right?

PS1 version, already officially translated, got a fan translation... but the Saturn version which didn't make it out of Japan didn't.

I know PS1 hacking has more share knowledge around the net; and also on PS1 they can use the original game as a base for the translation; but it still seems stupid as fuck.

Anyway that didn't prevent me from enjoying the game. Once you've played the original, which you should 'cause the Saturn verison is better appreciated after playing the original, you should have no problem playing the moonspeak version. I used the wikia as well as this site to translate items name and description when needed.

This. The AI, moveset and attack pattern of SotN bosses is so shit it's not even funny. Only the 2 final bosses provides some fun. Also the mist mode trivializes the entire inverted castle, which is where you can find some challenge from regular enemies, but then again they have high HP, so moving your way through without mist gets annoying after a while.

Best thing you can do.
My bro and I made a 10-hitpoint run challenge where if you were hit 10 times before reaching a save-room you had to reset no matter if it was a medusa head o Legion's laser.
Healing items healed 1HP and Soul Steal was banned.

The clock tower was hardcore and awesome.

reminder that this exists. a save that puts you at level 99 with level 1 stats. you'll never have enough mp for soul steal and familiars can't level. it almost seems like the levelup system was an afterthought because the game is still playable. its not even really that hard, but you might notice bosses have new attacks because you used to kill them so fast.

There's also already a HardcoreVania. Serio's Castlevania Fighter.

What you'd need is a proper set of tools for that. Map maker, that sort of thing. Like what Super Metroid and Super Mario World has. No one has done that.

>> No.2701530

I wonder what tools they used. When I looked up PS1 homebrew and hacking stuff a while back everything I found was built to run on pre xp os.
