So, as you guys probably already know, the Master System and Game Gear share a huge chunk of their library. However, despite a lot of those shared games being backwards ports made for Brazil and Europe, most of the Master System versions end up superior due to the system's higher resolution.

Are there any games that are actually superior on the Game Gear when compared to its Master System port, or is everything shared between the two just not worth playing on Game Gear?

Star Wars has an extra level not on the MS or NES versions

Technically there should be a lot of games, since the the SGG's color palette is vastly bigger. 4000 color to choose from.

Gunstar Heroes only made it to the Game Gear. That's all I can say.

I'm wondering... It's possible to play SMS games on the GG trough an adapter, but is it possible to the same in reverse like GG games on SMS?

A lot GG games didn't use the system to its full potential, so you get cases where it's exactly the same on MS. There's a few like Legend of Illusion where the game has slightly worse colors but better screen size on MS.

No. The main issue is that the GG can display a lot more colors than the MS. Games take that into account, and the way they store color information is different. A GG can understand the SMS palette codes, but the reverse is not technically feasible.

if the game came out on both machines at the same time then they probably shared the same source code, so you would expect the sms version to be more playable, but your probably gonna want to double check just in case

if a gg game came out well after the sms, then its worth investigating. woody pop was a japan exclusive paddle game that got reissued on the gg for example.

theres a few cases of the sms version coming out after the gg as well. putt and putter is effectively a sequel and is probably the better game. then theres streets of rage, even though we all know you should play it on the md, the 8bit games are also different from each other - the gg version lacks adam, but the sms version only has 2 enemies on screen at a time so is boring.

It's good to know that Axl looks great kicking ass even in 8bit.

G Sonic/Sonic Blast is the worst of both worlds.

It was too fucking zoomed in originally and was virtually unplayable (and ugly). The SMS version fixed this, but it's a Brazil exclusive and even if you want to emulate it the damn thing runs at 3/4 speed. There's no winning with that game.
