Was there ever a multiplat game or port of a game on N64 that wasn't worse in some way? Stuff like missing voice and video clips, slight censorship, performing not as well seem to be mentioned whenever an N64 version of a game gets brought up.

So I was wondering if there is a game on N64 that was on-par with every other version of the game at that time.

Pod Racer on 64 was p. dope

Resident Evil 2. That's about it.

it's missing a cutscene and doesn't have battle mode.

however, it's the only version with 3rd person controls

Rayman 2 is much better than on the PS1.
Dreamcast is better than on N64, but then it is another gen.

I think there were other 3D platformers that were better on the N64.

San Francisco Rush
Rayman 2
NFL Blitz
Wipeout 64

Fun Fact: basically every port from the PS1 uses the d-pad

I'm hard pressed to think of any that were better. Maybe MK Trilogy because of no loading times?

I didn't even know any Tony Hawk games came out for N64 until way after the fact, but it still boggles my mind they even released those with such short music tracks.

It was clearly the point where Nintendo decided to go their own way, for better or worse.

As others have said, the 'best' version is a bit debatable, but there are some clear cases where the N64 is a strong contender for the best version, and at least is definitely not the worst version.

- Gauntlet Legends -- the N64 version is clearly superior to the PS1 version, and argueably better than the Dreamcast version

- Rayman 2 -- as others have mentioned, it's clearly superior to the PS1 version.

- Doom 64 -- Debateable, since it's apples vs. oranges, but the case can be made that PS1 version is inferior since it's not as good as the PC version, while the N64 version is an original product.

Quake 2 -- Likewise, outside of the fact that the graphics are better on N64, the N64 version is unique to the system, while the PS1 version is just a port of PC

Megaman 64 --- as you noted

NFL Blitz -- as noted above, it's wayyyyy better on N64, Far more fluid gameplay and better controls make up for the muddy audio.

Mega Man 64 had muddied audio, less draw distance and worse controls through.

Star Wars Racer was on PC and Dreamcast. Neither of those are directly comparable to the N64 version. Regardless, this is a Star Wars game and one of the N64's weakness is music, so yeah.

>>2694923
Wipeout 64 on N64 compared to what? It's a N64 exclusive game.

>Dreamcast is better than on N64, but then it is another gen.

the dreamcast version was developed first so I don't really see how that's relevant

>> No.2695341

I'm excluding games that are better on PC or Dreamcast or Arcade or Playstation

Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M. - Worse on PS1 in virtually every way

BattleTanx: Global Assault - PS1 version looks, controls and plays inferior to the N64 version. The CD music is nothing special either.

Glover - PS1 version looks and plays like a turd. The PC version is supposed to exist but I've never seen it and it probably wouldn't play well on modern PCs anyway.

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine - Has better lighting, controls and improved level design compared the PC version. The PC version has better textures and resolution, but feels less fun to play and runs more unstable

Nightmare Creatures - N64 looks virtually identical (textures, etc) to the PS1 version except the graphical glitches are fixed as per usual. Also the N64 has a few tweaked and improved gameplay elements.

Rat Attack! on PS1 and N64 are both equally shit

South Park - N64 version is the way to go, the PC version is buggy and virtually impossible to get going these days

Space Station Silicon Valley - the PS1 version (EVO Space Adventures) is an abomination, the N64 version is better

Spider Man - the N64 version does some things better and the PS1 version does some things better. The N64 doesn't have FMV but replaces it with comic book scenes which are pretty good too. The music isn't as high quality on N64 but is more dynamic (changes more to what is happening in the game). The PS1 version runs at a higher resolution than N64 when no expansion pack is used, but a lower resolution when the expansion pack is used (but the higher resolution means a worse framerate), but the N64 graphics look way less glitchy (PS1 version has some affine distorted building textures which look weird as hell).

The World Is Not Enough: Not really the same game on PS1, but the N64 version is leagues better.

As a final note, pretty much all the N64 multiplatform wrestling games are better on N64 than on PS1.

>slight censorship

Funny thing, Mega Man 64 actually is uncensored as opposed to Mega Man Legends in the west. It has the cat girl erotic comic book,on the PS1 it's some superhero comic.

>>2695041
>muddied audio

only the voice clips, music sounds pretty much the same as far as I can tell

>less draw distance
True, but it's not like the PS1 version's draw distance is much better either.

>worse controls through.

Bullshit, it even has 3D stick support (I still play with the d-pad though)

I have both versions of Legends and sadly, there isn't a definitive best. N64 version actually does some things better, for instance it got rid of the fluttering textures and many minor graphical glitches present on the PS version (invisible walls, etc), also has the benefit of not having load times. Whenever I want to replay Legends, I go for the N64 version just because of that.
The PC version is also good, has the best graphics out of all the versions, but has really fucked up cutscenes.

Legends on N64 and PC could have been MUCH better though. Capcom did a lazy job.

>> No.2696715

I kind of prefer the N64 version of WinBack to the PS2 version because it controls like a beauty with a good condition N64 stick and the PS2 version's voice acting is a special kind of awful. The PS2 version (obviously) looks better though.

>>2696698
How's the PSP version of Legends?

>> No.2696721

I actually haven't tried the PSP version yet, I should. I think it's just the PS1 versions of the games though, not sure if they improved anything.

It sounds really subjective, care to explain?

>> No.2696738

Not that guy, but the PC version has a really clunky inventory+combat system and really stiff tank controls and some bullshit map design in places. Factor 5 made lots of little tweaks to the N64 version to try to improve it. For example, the frequent auto checkpoint saves weren't present in the PC version, AFAIK.

Ironically, the N64 version has a reputation for being buggy and unstable, when the PC version will crash if you fire guns to fast or pick up items or even try to boot the game without a pre-existing save game to load. Depending on your hardware and OS.

2696746

Ahem. Okay, so this one is a bit of cheat since the game was originally designed for the N64 and the PS1 didn't have the memory to load its maps so the developers resorted to cutting out interiors, gutting the draw distance, and adding some voice acting and FMVs. The reason the N64 original lacked voice acting was because 3DO couldn't afford larger cartridges.
