Is Pokemon Red/Blue the last great 8-bit game to be released? Were there any 8-bit games released after Red/Blue that had a similar level of cultural impact? I can't think of any.

>> No.2694775

Depends, do you want to count indie games in the retro style such as Cave Story or Shovel Knight?

OP here, I thought it went without saying but yes I want to exclude modern games done in an 8-bit style, including Mega Man 9 and 10. My question pertains only to games released on an 8-bit system.

>> No.2694815

I am pretty sure The Gold Silver games sold a shitload of units, over 20 millions, and Wario Land 2 and 3, and the Capcom Zelda games (Oracle and Seasons) were all successful millions sellers.

>> No.2694839

I can barely name a handful of games from any era with a similar level of cultural impact to Pokemon, let alone any late GB games. It's not exactly a fair point of comparison.

>>2694771
those games were the shit, i just cant play them anymore though. It's on the same level as watching barney imo.

>> No.2694842

Shantae might be the last GBC game to make a notable impact, but even then that was just a cult game.

not many games had the same cultural impact period. great post-pokemon 8 bit games tho? tons. GBC had games released until 2002.

I put Red/Blue on the same level with Super Mario Bros. for the NES. Very few games get to that level.

True

Shantae was wonderful

>> No.2695335

I think to find games that spawned cultural phenomenons on par with pokemon, you have to look past the 8-bit requirement.

I can only think of a few, basically just games that invented or radically redefined a genre and led to tons of imitations. Examples would be mario 1, mario 64, Doom, and Halo CE... can't think of anything else that had that much cultural impact

>last great 8-bit game
>after
considering that 8-bit gaming was eclipsed by 16 an 32/64 bit gaming, and that the only real contender for 8-bit gaming was the gbc that's kind of a loaded question.

>>2694775
>>2695339
>not knowing where you are

>>2694840
there are always difficulty hacks or challenge runs. some consider the idea trite considering the developers didn't make the games hard by default but i find that playing with a self imposed limitation can restore the novelty of easy games.

>>2694815
the games you list sold well to be sure, but i can't think of a franchise as ubiquitous as pokemon. ages/seasons and the wario games don't surpass pokemon simply for the fact that you normies (e.g. people who didn't play games) could be oblivious to their existence. further they didn't revolutionize/re-establish their respective genre/franchise.

>>2694842
cult status sort of removes the 'cultural' portion of the question. i wasn't even aware of shantae until /vr/ brought it to my attention.

>>2695335
>halo anything
that aside, op has us up for failure with the stipulations of being 8-bit and released after pokemon.

>> No.2695656

>>2695339
Well, no, why should Shovel Knight be brought in? It's really new.

It's interesting that the game is done in such a way that it's within the technical limitations of an NES game, but just because it's made to feel and look retro, doesn't mean it's actually retro.

I knew someone would be rustled about Halo, but really, Halo 1 redefined the FPS genre to the point that today, 14 years later, mechanics it introduced are still standard. As far as I know, Halo 1 introduced regenerating health, a dedicated melee and grenade button, and the two-weapon system. These mechanics are standard in shooters to this day. So it did have a big impact on the industry.

Retro styled games aren't 8 bit. Nothing against them, but they just aren't 8 bit.

But if you can think of any great modern games built for 8 bit hardware then please tell.

Regenerating health is shit if you can just sit somewhere and let it all heal.

Far Cry 3 and Riddick had the right idea by making your healthbar be set up in increments, and that an increment can't regen if it's been emptied (requiring you to take action to restore it).
