It does some of it's own little things though, has it's own set of sounds, lacks a few levels.

I think the Doom releases for last gen consoles were fine, despite small bits of censorship, all the levels are there, and the controls are by far the best console controls Doom has ever had.

It's pretty good. Doom 1 levels are based on the simplified Jaguar maps and the framerate can be a bit iffy, but it has a spooky ambient soundtrack, nice coloured lighting, and some cool original secret maps. It's definitely good quality.

Are there any mods for Heretic that do some weapon re-skinning? Not actually altering the gameplay, just think Smooth Doom but for Heretic. Heretic weapons are just unsatisfying and I'd like to know if there is a mod to change sprites/sounds/animations without actually altering game balance.

If you're on linux it's easy as installing the package and if you want an easy to use interface, also install libvirt and virt-manager. Doing this, it'll work the same as VBox, difference is it'll use QEMU+KVM to emulate devices and for I/O between host and guest. You can even run VBox through libvirt if it fancies you.

So, I'm working on a wad that involves a huge sword. So I ripped and tweaked the art from Hexen's Quietus, and put it into the wad. Only problem is, whenever I test it out, it pops up as 'HolySword at (X, X) Has no frames', no matter where I put the png files. They're all validly named as XXXXA0, but they're just not working.

Lua is literally one of the easiest fucking languages to learn and manage, the single fact that it handles everything smoothly with only 4 data-types and completelly functional programming is a blessing in itself.

Ok first off there's no "Drop in detail", you're going on about nuances. Why does it matter if the floor is using rock or grass? If anything the grass is MORE detailed than leaving the whole level as one single texture wrapped through the whole map.

A spinning skybox is not only completely unnecessary, but can be distracting in the heat of battle when the human eyes are trained to follow any motion in the even there's a threat oncoming. Complaining about the lack of a gimmick IS sperging out, not "complaining about a lack of detail". If anything, YOU'RE lacking attention to detail by requesting a distracting gimmicky element.

And finally "the map is really bright". Uh... good? What the hell is wrong with that? A nice, bright map makes it more clear to see where everyone is? It makes it easier to line up shots and notice all the enemies and allies? The new lightwarp it uses FITS THE DAMN ART STYLE?

I was talking about how people seem to be nitpicking both remakes for having a somewhat different look and feel from the games they're based/inspired upon and saying both look shitty for the most part, based on little details. I like guns with classy wood, in particular weapons which aren't designed as modern combat weapons, where everything doesn't have to be 100% top of the line and all tactical, but for fighting purposes, plastic is better, aside from maybe clubbing an opponent with the stock, but unless it's a flimsy gun like the G36, you'll probably be fine anyway.

Well it's really more of a long-term issue, it's not gonna warp over night.
I think if you can make a practical gun about a pound lighter while still maintaining it's practical capabilities, it's worth it.

Also, pools of blood and sludge, that's moisture. And hell can be lots of things, I'm sure there are near jungle-like hells, dark and damp, with horrid giant insects and large muscled monsters with big teeth (I guess a halfway between a pinkie and a hellknight or something?), vicious things. Maybe monsters which are trees and vines?

Wood super-shotguns are olev though. Pic related is just a cheap-ass Baikal, but cut down the stock and barrel and do a clean job of it, give the wood some classy red varnish, and you have a very pleasant little blaster.

I came across the Marathon automatically closing bug, it was fixed by deleting the files and unzipping them again (your saves and prefs won't be affected).

I think it had to do with having Steam, Dxtory, and OBS try to hook into it at the same time, after that it started doing that. Close down any programs like that, and see if it runs. Dxtory 1.0.133 and 1.0.132 both stopped it from starting properly until I tried the delete files fix above.

Between having Doom for better gameplay and SS1 for the same story told better (and both completely destroy it in every other regard), there's little reason to bother with Marathon. The game is ugly. The texture resolution and detail is nice but the maps use them so poorly that it doesn't matter, and the HUD sprites are nothing to write home about. Sounds are low quality and weak. The level design ranges from nothing special to completely awful, and 80% of the enemies you fight are just recolors of each other with different stats. Music is inoffensive, but also unmemorable. It's notable because it's all Macfriends had and it isn't as bad as, say, Capstone's shitfests, but there's not much point in wasting your time with it when you could be playing something better.

You didn't turn off the high res texture pack and XBLA HUD in the Plugins section. I'd go do that, in addition to turning off texture filtering. That's pretty much the only reason for the resolution differences.

Secondly, 2 and Infinity improve on it in pretty much every aspect. 1 is indeed pretty rough, but it had some cool ideas for the time if one looks past the low budget assets.

I don't know what to tell you, just unzip what's in there and click Marathon.exe to play. It should be that simple. If not, try closing any programs like Dxtory/Fraps, restart your system, or delete the files and try fresh. You're on Windows, aren't you?

To try and steer this topic off of "your favorite retro fps is stupid because mine is better", I'd take that challenge.
I've had two in mind that I've been wanting to work on:

1: Gameplay mods done 1999 style, a tongue-in-cheek throwback trying to emulate the old old early Decorate/late Dehacked style of modding.
Lots of gamerips for sprites (did somebody say SHADOW WARRIOR UZI?), Quake/Quake 2/Half Life sound effects, inventory items in the HUD, gun smoke coming directly from the player rather than the gun, and functions mostly identical to the original vanilla weapons.

2: Another take on the "harder monsters" mods out there, but without randomization, without extra fancy items, without any massive gameplay overhauls--trying to create a "dark and gritty" atmosphere like Satanic or Doom 64 with killer enemies and straightforward weapons.

I used to do this with my old shitty 'finding out how to DECORATE' mod. Tougher zombies that replace normal zombies, certain zombies that actually have to be killed more than once, etc.
I decided that that is a very shitty thing to do in a mod, because mapmakers design monsters to be used in the same exact places. Demons are there to soak up bullets. Chaingunners to bring the pain. Hell Barons as minibosses, Zombies and shotgunners as gunfodder, etc. On top of that, weapons are in the same spots to be used for the same purposes. If a mapmaker wants to equip you with a rapid-fire weapon, you shouldn't make the chaingun into a long-range bolt-action sniper.. If a mapmaker wants to equip you with an explosive weapon, why would you replace it with a shotgun?

Even though I'm breaking my own rule with my newer mod, at least in the case of the plasma rifle. Turning it into a coilgun, a centered long-range beam weapon. Said coilgun recharges power over time, and fires rods. So you COULD fire them all in one big burst, and then have to wait to let it charge (or use an inventory item that recharges it) but it's smarter to line all the monsters up and fire.

Yeah, I'd probably use this mod as an experiment for more intricate/bastardly enemy behavior, instead of just "Doom Monsters But More Damage/Health".

First order is making everything darker and gloomier. Added some brightmaps to lights and did a script to darken all sectors by up to 32 units, also replaced the sky with blackness. New palette to desaturate things a little.
For the sake of clarity, I'll probably give the monsters brightmaps so they're more easily recognized and identified, so we don't become Doom 3.

That's the attempt! Here's my current function list for the game, though I need more sprites for basically everything:

>Scout Class: Faster and lighter than the normal marine, the Scout can also go blurred (like a blursphere) when he stops moving, but loses it the moment he takes damage. But he only has 50 health, so be careful!
>Heavy Class: Slower and more durable than the normal marine, the Heavy has twice as much maximum armor and health.
>Tech Class: The Technician uses only 34ths the ammo for tech weapons. And starts out with some useful gadgets.

And then for weapons:

>Plasma Gatling (Replaces the chaingun): The first tech weapon, the plasma gatling fires off a bunch of projectiles in an uncoordinated mess.
>Grenade Launcher (Replaces the Rocket Launcher): Fires a grenade in a looong parabolic arc. Using the altfire will make it bounce off of walls until it stops or hits a monster.
>Coilgun (Replaces the plasma rifle): I just described it, but I'll do it again. Charges power over time, spends both power and rails to fire. Fires as fast as you want until it runs out of power. Technician's perk only works for the power draw.
>Antimass Driver Cannon (Replaces the BFG): I'll need to tweak this. A lot. Until I can get it to work the way I want. In short... Black holes.

In the summer of 2000, he dumped all of his technical writeups on the Doom engine, and virtually disappeared.

His DoomWiki article says he began work in numerical linear algebra, but no citation. Hell, the Wikipedia article that its a copypaste of was deleted because there is so little information on him.

MBF was awesome. When I was younger, I had a machine with a 486DX2 and 16MB of RAM. After testing out the new (at the time) Doom Legacy source port, which ran like balls ofc, MBF was a godsend. 640x400, Boom-compatible wad support, and could use GUS patches for decent MIDI on my shitty little SB clone, and still had a good framerate.

I think you're vastly over-estimating how demanding the requirements actually are.

Let's try something really specific and especially recognizable. You could make a level that starts outside the White House and it's a large palace that looks white and then goes inside and suddenly it's really intricate; you'd basically have Hellground's map01.
You could make a level that's separated floors, jump into a room, kill enemies, go back into elevator, jump into room, kill enemies, go back into elevator, that plays exactly like Going Down. Then you step out and you see you were going up the Eiffel Tower.

I think assuming, since I'm not the OP of the challenge the goal of this isn't to try and make something realistic or earthly, but rather to jumpkick inspiration about what a level environment could be since you can take an existing area and warp it.

As a Zandronum player I can sort of sympathize, since there's a lot of ZDoom-specific functions which...well, aren't really all that big and can very easily be Zandified.
Until recently, frandom could be Zandified simply by applying a decimal divisor to it. Hell, even something like the recent like A_SetSpeed has at least three different alternatives that can allow it to be used in pre-2.1 G/ZDoom builds, or Zandro.
But ultimately I think it's more important that someone works in a context that they're both comfortable with and know how to work with.

A lot.
I'm not familiar with the code of those two in particular, but let's take a mod like WildWeasel's Nazis!, which is a fantastic mod that uses a whole bunch of ZDoom features that can be very easily worked around in order to work in Zandro--the tracer trails for the bullets can be done via spawning items while reading the bullet's velocity, the cast call at the end can be cut entirely because it's just fluff, the A_CheckSightOrRange can just be turned into a simple A_CheckSight and then A_JumpIfCloser, etc, etc.
But nobody in their right mind would insist that Nazis! should be Zandronum-compatible. It'd be stupid to try and force an author to try and make his project for something he's not comfortable using.

So for me, yes, "they made it in ZDoom" is a good enough reason. I know maps and gameplay mods are held to two entirely separate standards in the community, but I think it's very silly to do that.

yes, thank you, that explains it nicely. it's a social issue borne from the preferences of a sufficiently large section of the community.

the short of it is if you want people to use an engine they don't like your map had better be damn good enough to warrant it. for example, for me, thunderpeak and zen dynamics were good enough projects that i was able to ignore my general disaffection for zdoom while playing them.

(not to say i don't like zdoom at all, i just don't use it except for gameplay mods; i have no interest in zdoom for traditional/unmodded play)
