What is the definitive Super Mario game /vr/?

>> No.2686057

Remakes can't be definitive.

>> No.2686061

SMB

>> No.2686062

The original Super Mario Bros. on NES.

Most people like Mario 3 more but I don't know what it is about it that I don't like that much. I just don't find it as fun.

>> No.2686068

>>2686062
out of all the original NES Mario games, Mario 2 always was my favorite.

>> No.2686078

Super Mario World

you can't say 3 is better as SMW is basically a massive improvement over 3

>> No.2686081

>>2686061

>Definitive
>SMB1
This is clearly the correct answer.

>>2686068
I'm not going to call you new but SMBUSA is the opposite of definitive

The BESTMmario game is either 3 or World, and we can always argue that endlessly but best and definitive are not synonymous.

Tell that to Popful Mail.

I prefer SMB Vs. than the one on NES

>you can't say 3 is better as SMW is basically a massive improvement over 3
I can say 3 is better because SMW was a downgrade from 3.

>> No.2686212

Lost Levels builds on the foundation of SMB, but doesn't overload it with new costumes and mechanics ala SMB3 onward

>> No.2686227

am i honestly missing something? why has no one said super mario rpg?

>> No.2686228

>>2686081

exactly. smb1 is definitive because it established what the mario series is about. that game is the essence of mario, which later titles built on.

smb2 is my personal favorite but I think smb3 was the best retro mario overall.

I wish we got more tanooki suits and kuribo shoes.

I disagree with your opinion.

Certainly not All-Stars due to the changes in game mechanics, especially in mario 1 and LL

>> No.2686619

I'm going to guess you are using that word in the correct context and say Super Mario Bros on the NES. That's what defined what Mario gameplay was all about.

Ground breaking? Mario 64
My favorite? Super mario world

So in what order did you play the Mario games?

For me it was:

SMB3, SMB1, SMW (only a little bit at a neighbor's place), SMB2 USA, SMW (this time the full thing, when I got my own SNES), SML2, SMB All-Stars, Yoshi's Island (if you want to count it as a Mario game), SM64.

It's just a programming oversight. The y-axis velocity is reversed for when you hit a block at the peak of your jump.

First one I ever played was the Atari 2600 Mario Bros game (the single screen one where you flip enemies).
I think I played 1 and 2 at friends' houses later on

Yoshi's Island was my first game and we got All-Stars not long after. So I played all of the SNES versions of the games around the same time. No regrets.

Damn, you made me realize I played Mario Bros. for the NES before Super Mario Bros. 3.
I guess I meant just the Super series.

>World 3-1 has a trampoline in which, if you jump too high, you jump over the castle and land in a warp zone with no way back that contains a pipe to world 1-1 and a chasm to commit suicide and start the level all over again

Thats the best warp ever, pop back to lvl 1 for extra lives+fireball, what's not to love, you could always warp right back anyhow.

I've always liked World more than 3.

I really like Super Mario Land just because it's so weird but interesting. It also plays like Mario 1.

Mario has been in so many different games with vastly different mechanics that his definative feature is being able to be any genre. That's a more defining aspect of him than running and jumping.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is the definitive Super Mario game. It's the perfection of the original formula.

I don't see why it was to some, it obviously kills you when you first touch it so don't do that again.

But the levels were just very tedious and not fun.

>> No.2693959

Not directly related I guess, but I just bought the mario bros 3 virtual console version on my wii u and saw all the visual glitches and oddities/sound errors that it has. Apparently the these are the same bugs on the original version

what's the opinion on stuff like this? personally, I was pretty put off by it and just went back to SMB2 instead but looking at other opinions some people think that errors and graphical glitches should be present in the VC copies.

the GBA port of super mario world is best mario
