The only difference between Classicvania and Metroidvania is that the latter allows you to backtrack, usually to give you a power-up to use to reach an otherwise inaccessible secret room.

Not retro, but have you tried Harmony of Despair? It's grindy as fuck, but you can play with other people online or in the same room if you have the PS3 version. When you unlock hard mode expect to get 2-3 shotted by bosses with even the best gear equipped. If you run berzerker mail you get one-shotted by almost everything, it's hilarious.

Yeah exactly. Even starting with the "hard" mode where your luck is 99 but other stats suck only helps for the first maybe 1/4 of the game and then you're just as crazy powerful.

The thing is that I love how much neat stuff there is in the game, all those different weapons, spells and items. But then the game doesn't give you anything worthwhile to really use them on. Inverted castle should have been like nightmare mode.

You can play solo. Playing with other people is much funner though and helps ease the grind. There are ingame voice commands, so there's no need for voice chat. It's my favorite game of all time and Castlevania is my favorite series. Playing with japs and being able to communicate with them through the voice commands is a very unique experience to say the least.
