I don't know how many hours I put on heroes 3. But I always played casualy (scenario on easy/normal). Now i want to get serious and play random maps on very hard/imposible maining Dungeon. Can you guys give me some tips how to play dungeon professionaly? Who's the best hero for dungeon? What buildings I must buy first? Whould really appreciate your help.

I hate these kind of missions where you have absolutely nothing and you have to rush enemy to get the upper hand. It boils down to trial and error because if you don't know where the enemy is, you are pretty much fucked.

Well, Dungeon's a pretty difficult faction to main on harder difficulties because it's so expensive to build up. I'd say getting early Harpy Hags and Beholders makes for somewhat easier creeping. I think Gunnar is the best Dungeon hero because of his Might stats and his Logistics specialization. I also like Jeddite for his early Resurrection, but he'll get more points in Spell Power and Knowledge than in Attack and Defence, which isn't preferable.

I've recently started playing homm3, and allthough i'm loving this game, some campaigns can be pretty frustrating, specially since i'm rather new.

That Crag Hack campaign, holy shit. If you don't rush the enemies on week 1 or 2, you're bound to be assfucked by some random hero with hordes and swarms of units. And if you don't get diplomacy, get fucked, even less units for you.

On Impossible as Dungeon, I would go with Shakti for the high amount of starting troglodytes and guaranteed Tactics skill, and leverage the Troglodytes to claim as many resources as possible to somehow climb up the tech tree.

I'd go with your typical dwellings first fare. Probably will end up massing Minos for a long time because you will struggle financially.

The only way you could possibly think that is if you've never played 3.

5 is worse in every conceivable way. Terrible balance, terrible AI, terrible interface. It's certainly a step above 4 and 6, I'd even go as far as to say that it's a decent game in spite of it's very significant flaws, but it's still not much more than a polished turd compared to 3 or 2.

As far as the graphics being better than 3? Literally the only visually appealing aspect of either game is the overworld of 3. Everything else is gaudy 3D or pre-rendered 3D. The battle screens are as trash as each other and 5 apes World of Warcraft in the worst possible way.

Thought I would just throw my maps out here again! :P
Masters of Sighisoara (No, we are not from Romania) is a series of Campaigns/Scenarios released over the span of 7 years.
We currently only release maps for HoMM3: SoD, but a stand alone game is in the works.

We are always looking for map testers, reviews and of course opinions about game play etc.

I'm on the mission where you need to capture Steadwick and you start with a Inferno, Dungeon and a Castle town, and I always find myself really low on resources and unable to buy many units. Should I focus on building all the dwellings in only one town to start with, while focusing on economy/resources with the others? Or am I supposed to rush building dwellings in all three?

When I encounter such situation my usual strategy is to build City Hall in two towns and focus on army in the last one. If the map is rich in resources and towns are appriopate I build some creature dwellings in other towns too (e.g. Rampart has pretty amazing early creatures after all so I like to recruit them even if they are not my main army).

In RoE campaigns, Tower was almost always my money making town. Its creatures are awfully expensive (~20k gold for basic creatures, ~30k for upgraded ones IIRC) and slow.
Castle is pretty expensive as well but I found myself recruiting creatures from this town more often (thanks to Stables and more convenient building requirements).
Rampart is pretty cheap and has good early army but dwarves and ents are kinda annoying to walk with.

In Steadwick's mission I was focusing on Inferno and Dungeon, completely ignoring creature dwellings in starting Castle IIRC.

>I have to complete every single scenario in the game
>Heroes 3 complete (HD to be precise, but just for the graphic and bug fixes)
>Impossible Difficulty
>No Necro/Conflux, i play as Dungeon in any scenario in which i can, otherwise it depends on the scenario
>I also have to find the grail before winning.
>No cheating (duh, the game literally labels tou as cheater if you win this way anyway)

Now here is the doubt.
Should i just save before the "winning move" for proof of winning reasons?
If you know of a better way to just prove that i won a scenario tell me, but maybe it's more enjoyable for downloaders to at least play the final battle in each scenario when i can't avoid it, i dunno.

TL;DR: How do you guys share saves and also prove that you won a map/scenario? I was thinking to just save before the winning move and let the player see the score screen for proof.

Mage tree is small and AoE only but since Elves are the fastest they get to cast their AoE before 50 initiative units a lot of the time. Only unit in the game that can remove armor too.
Support is the only tree that is clearly inferior to the Empire Support tree but the ability to place Fire / Air Ward on all units can be situationally overpowered (against Legions AoE / Empire's AoE sources).

Makes sense too, since Undead have shit spells and their ghosts get raped by Gargoyles (who also deal Earth damage, not physical - and they have Mind Ward). Gargoyles basically rape everything the Undead can offer in combat and the Demons faction have the strongest spells (i.e. one that paralyzes your party on map for an entire turn, gg no re).

If you played the game without the expansion pack, where Ghosts had a 60 (I think? or 40?) initiative, then sure those fuckers are goddamn overpowered. They have an initiative of 20 in Rise of the Elves meaning that they will always go after all ranged units (base 60, or 50 if Dwarves), melee units (50-40) and mage units (45-30), maybe some super slow melee units (giants/ogres) have 20 initiative too. The only slower units are maybe healers or Alchemist at 10.

I'm probably baited but why though? It depends on the map but if you push a lot of creatures in the first week you'll have the number advantage, you'll be able to do economy the second week and your initial investment pays of.

Is writing homm3 bots easy? It could be a easy and cool thing to write bots for and see which one is optimal (wrt some optimality measure)

Do you guys know if heroes 7 will be able to run on XP with very good graphic cards and such?

I know the minimum system requirements say windows 7, but so did Endless Legend (which is quite intensive) and the 32 bit runs fine.

So I'm playing the campaings of HoMM3.
Pretty smooth sailing, nothing too hard yet, playing them in order.

Playing the Armageddon's Blade campaing right now with the map where you play as Roland for the first time, fifth stage in that campaing I think?

One enemy hero (Fiona) is all over the goddamn place it seems, using some kinda fly/teleport spells to move around. Once they even got stuck behind my town because they flied there and ran out of moves/mana so they just were stuck there forever.

Anyway, my question is, is this scenario supposed to be so damn hard?
She's flying around everywhere and no matter if I take the portal to attack from east or come from west via the garrison gate, she will meet up with me pretty fast and wipe the floor with her larger army.

If I stay back to get more troops the same thing happens pretty much, and sometimes another douchebag comes through the portal if I don't guard it either and I lose my towns because I took all my units to fight this insanely mobile hero instead.

What I miss from homm3 when playing homm2:

> Tactics skill
> Skipping an unit lets you attack after everyone else
> Less random skill advancement

What would be nice but non-essential:

> More spaces in the army
> More upgradable buildings
> Artifacts slots and paper doll system
> Nearfing ghosts (not sure about that)

Things I'm on the fence about:
> More buildings in town (adding capitol etc)

Streaming games is really simple, 10 year olds who play minecraft are able to do so, and I don't see a reason why person smart enough to play HoMM on impossible wouldn't be. Make account on Twitch and grab Open Broadcaster Software, it's free and really easy to use. Tutorial in that program will hold you by hand and tell you everything you need and it will be very clear even if you haven't streamed before. You don't need any kind of audio recording unless you want to commentate on fly, in that case, cheapest mike will do. But I don't think that game like HoMM III really needs any kind of commentary, interaction with watchers on the chat would be sufficient. If you hate Twitch for some reason, try Hitbox or Ustream.

It's pretty good, although it feels a lot slower and the early fights are a lot harder. In return, late game, your heroes are practically unbeatable killing machines (you can have multiple of those on the field, like in Heroes 4, and you also have a Wizard which usually sits in his Wizard tower in your main town and casts spells from there globally, kind of like Heroes 3 except safer).

7 is not as disappointing as I had feared.

+ Looks pretty I suppose, that Unreal Engine doing its job
+ Core gameplay is solid. Balance will require further analysis, but it feels like H5 (although like the first version of H5 at that, not 3.1) which is good
+ Music is fantastic. There's actually extra tracks on the OST for Fortress and Inferno which aren't factions in the game yet. There's some tracks reused from 6 though.
+ The editor seems to be really convenient and powerful
+ Skill wheel is pretty good, it gives a certain H6-esque freedom of choice while not making you feel like you're never in charge like it was in 5
+ Pretty decent town development mechanicsms. Lots of choice, cool utility buildings.
+ Heroes are pretty different. Even among one faction heroes have access to different skill sets so it kinda works like an extended specialization.

- Multiplayer doesn't work, period. Even after getting around port forwarding problem we were unable to finish a single game
- Campaigns are trash. If you don't like that style of single player design where they strip down the gameplay and script everything to tell you a "story", like in H5-6 or Warcraft 3, you won't like it here. Also, cutscenes are so cheaply made they make HoMM3 cinematics look like Pixar.
- Only 8 fucking MP maps packed in
- Maps still feel claustrophobic as fuck
- Hero level is capped to 30 across the entire game. You're unlikely to reach that in most games, but just... why?
- Needs a pretty good rig to keep running at stable 60 fps

If they keep improving the game with patches and DLC it could end up being on the level of H5 late in its life.

So does that mean that you have fuck all upgrades for your heroes? Back in HOMM3 you needed what, ~21 levels or so to fully upgrade your hero. If you say you are unlikely to reach level 30, then you probably have much less choices at upgrades.

If they capped that so low, then I shudder to think at how badly the game must scale. Part of the fun in HOMM3 was how crazy it would scale on long ass maps, pic related.

From what I played in the Beta, I really liked what they did with the game, much better then 6. It felt like they tried making a true sequel, taking the good parts of H3 and H5.

I was so disappointed at first that the creature tiers was simplified to a 3 tier system, until I discovered that it was a stealth 7 tier system like the pre H6 games.

Is Diplomacy still OP broken as it was in the Beta? Insane 1 hour loading to launch saved games? Memory leaks?

These were the biggest problems in the beta from what I remember.

>If the campaigns are similar to the ones from Warcraft 3 or HoMM 5, I actually like it.
...Can I just ask, why?
Instead of doing what 1-4 campaigns did and simply putting you onto carefully crafted game maps with standard mechanics (i.e. nothing you can't do in the editor yourself) they put you into preset situations thereby removing most of the natural gameplay which is already quite unsophisticated. Why even play Heroes if all you want is to go from point A to point B as prompted by the quest log and not... well, develop towns, collect resources and dominate the enemies?

It's almost like the devs are so scared of their game mechanics and AI they instead concoct some stupid shit (pic related, it's a fucking PLATFORMING PUZZLE) to replace the gameplay. Sometimes I'm even wondering, why they don't disable turn-based progression in those cases if there's frequently no enemy that takes turns with you to begin with.

You need 6 skillpoints to get from novice something to master, 3 of those points are abilities you get to pick. The 7th point could be the specialization of wich you can have 3 after mastering a certain skill. So in theory you could get all 3 of your specializations in 21 levels, while mastering 3 skills. But you can also get lucky and get aditional skills unlocked by some huts on the map.

Yes, there are simpler missions where your goal is to travel from point A to point B but you can't foolishly imply that's how the whole game is constructed.

Yes, I've beaten all the campaigns in every Heroes games (except for 7, that's in progress). Story is fine, caring about the story is fine, but not when gameplay is sacrificed to it. It's exactly why games like Uncharted or Asscreed have detractors - primitive gameplay, QTEs, lots of "story" to get immersed in. I prefer my video games as games first. If devs can't tell a story through the game's mechanics, perhaps they should reconsider telling a story in this kind of medium. Heroes 4 had a lot of story without necessarily butchering the game mechanics, for example.

That's just my opinion though but the one that I strongly believe in.

Yeah, I was annoyed at the shitty 3 tier system as well, but it's not the case here.

While you have 3 creatures each in the first and second tiers, their powers are not comparable at all. The first creature you can build is weaker then the second, and both are much weaker then the third.

For example the Heaven castle, wolves vs the sentinels. 30 wolves will rape 90 sentinels easily, even though they are in the same "core tier". This power difference applies to the "elite tier" as well.

Depends on fraction

Early army:

Castle
Stronghold
Necropolis

You can skip buying some dwellings and upgrades. For castle getting archangels is insta win. I usually skip on griffins and cavaliers. You only need marksmen to get really far.

Necro has them self replenishing lvl 1 units and self healing vampire lords. Not to mention death knights and a cheaper on mana version of ressurect. I never buy ghost dwelling or ghost dragon dwelling. No point in buying or upgrading zombies.

Barbarians have easy access to behemoth. Fuck cyclops and ogres.

Economy:

Dungeon
Rampart

rampart is THE economy faction you will never run out of gold with these fuckers.

Dungeon needs lots of money for buying dragons and only dragons due to summoning portal + red dragon external dwelling abuse.

You're fucked either way mostly due to terrain.

Inferno
Tower
Fortress

These factions have nothing going for them.

>> No.2715729

Actually it depends entirely on the army compositions. You'd think that whichever lets you do the most moves is better, but you also have to weigh in whether your troops can reach the enemy in 1 turn (even with haste), and how much counterattack the opposing forces can do regardless of speed.

Like, maybe you can do more damage by just berserking the middle bunch of the enemies and use your shooters to take the corner guys. Or using Chain Lightning to clear up half the screen. Or blind that huge stack of archangels in advance.

HoMM 3 has tons of content, was imo better in terms of unit composition and variety (cough cough dwarves), had better campaigns. Also it has hexes which are just superior to squares in about every way. And overall, I don't like 3D adventure map, it's not clear enough for me (i like to be able to imagine a grid without needing actual grid, and III/IV does allow that). Also, random map generator and WOG, if pants-on-head retarded (but fun) content is your thing. And HotA.
H V does the hero probably the best, as well as having alternate upgrades (even though like only half are real choices, its still there). It also introduces a lot of unit abilities - you might like it, i honestly kind of despise that.

Also hexes were so nice for aiming spells/creature attacks.

>> No.2720160

Flanking is garbage. I understand the desire to add more depth to tactical combat (even though in a good Heroes game everything is solved on the adventure map) but the way it was implemented was not the way to go.

Fights turn into stacks dancing around each other to deal maximum damage. It looks ridiculous. And you can't meaningfully influence the orientation of your units because only attacking turns you. So if you want to retreat for any reason, you'll be turning your back towards the enemy. There's absolutely zero way to rotate your units even if it would involve spending movement points, or even extra movement points. And then there's hilarious shit like attempting to flank minotaurs. Minotaurs counterattack before your attack is delivered, but since the stack only turns upon attacking it means they'll get to flank attack you. It's just so dumb.

>> No.2720190

>>2720160

Its not well implemented. I like the idea of it tough. It would be heaps better if homm 7 would use something like kings bounty, where you get movement points, and an attack, so you could move severall times to position yourself properly/tun.

Also, with minotaurs, get good and don't repeatably try to flank them if you see its not working the first time. Its like attacking a creature with vigilance and complaining it keeps retaliating. Or at least use up their counterattack first before you try to flank them.

-250 HP
-2nd fastest town unit after Phoenix.
-Resurrection
- +1 Morale to whole team
-Huge ass defence.
-5000 Gold 3 Gems

Archdevil
- 30-40 Damage.(???)
- 200 HP
- Slower than angels.
- No retaliation, -1 enemy luck (The only good thing about them)
- Weaker defences and atk.
- 4500 Gold 2 Mercury (???)

What were they thinking? A highly costly level 7 with weakest atk of all level 7's, weakest hp, shitty defences.. Don't get me wrong, Archdevils are probably my favorite level 7's because they are the only unique fuckers in the game. Look at Archangel, an overbuffed nigger fucker who wrecks your army easy. Devils if used correctly are good, but not with these stats. 200 Hp is fine, because of the no retaliation ability, so it means you either go all in or you are fucked, but how can you go all in with 30-40 dmg? What the fuck? If they had made their atk a fixed 50 Inferno still wouldn't be a balanced town, but it would fucking help, holy shit. Only thing good about Inferno are the Cerberi and Efreeti, others are mega shit, they should have made the Devils something like a key to try to be competitive, and not laughing material.

you can have the initiative by hasting too, so it does not matter in that scenario (shooters vs shooters). OTOH you can reach the enemy by hasting some of your melee units in the first round. And really, every time you have a fat stack of slow powerful creatures (skeletons, hydra etc) you want to engage with, you want them hasted.

AoW is more comparable to master of magic than HoMM although down the line they are all related.

AoW is very comfy, great music and setting and for me great nostalgia. But playing 90s fantasy games I don't even have nostalgia for, I find that AoW is inferior to most others. AoW hero design is broken, wall-climbing,10 defense, dominate and lightning strike are too OP. The magic system in MoM kind of sucked since dispel and the meta-magic destroyed the purpose of battle magic, however AoW and Homm both remedy that. But skirmishes in AoW are very small and tactical wherein the scale in Homm is much more grandiose.

Homm is more long term in the fun it provides, although AoW has a better soundtrack and violence.

While this is true no game since 3 shipped in a complete, playable, bugless form. It took months and 2 addons for 5 to become the great game it is now. 4 is still somewhat disfunctional and buggy. 6 was also patched up over the years. And now 7 is out and guess what? It's a buggy piece of shit with scraps for content.

People are too lazy to formulate the underlying problems though so they just cry it's not how they remember it. And why wouldn't they if it plays like a shittier remake of an old game on a poorly optimized engine?

>> No.2725934

>>2725885

Oh i wont defend the state the games shipped in, its a sad affair that they are all barely able to run on most machines. Homm 7 is a big offender there, i personally had only 1 problem, which seemed to be global and everyone had the same problem with the dungeon campaign. Other than that i guess they simply only focused on the ultra options for the game on great pcs.

Wich means anything below that was unoptimized, or never even tested. And for a homm game thats pretty horrible. As homm is and always will be my go to travelling game. Or game for rainy days without internet.

But the thing with "scraps for content". It has i think more campaign missions than homm 3 had on launch. I wont comment on the quality of the campaign, but the content is there as well. Its just that a lot of us played homm with all the addons that many forgot how barren the base games were.

>> No.2726013

>>2725934
>I wont comment on the quality of the campaign, but the content is there as well.
But that's directly connected. You can't just take the number of maps and compare it directly. H7 campaign is the worst to date. When a map is a straight line that can be cleared in 30 minutes, what value does it have? It's not even gameplay. Enjoy your 500 titans given to battle a preset army. Wow, such content.

1-4 all shipped with plenty of non-campaign maps, it wasn't until Ubisoft that they decided that 10-14 maps on release is okay. And these games also had the advantage of an easy to use editor. H7 editor is a modified UDK which takes more resources to run than the main game and is just not conductive to users creating lots of maps. They have RMG, yes, except it sucks and maps it creates are bland, empty and poorly balanced. Whichever option you pick, H7 isn't very promising.

Additionally, they should've considered the pressure of the franchise legacy. Yeah, we now have lots of custom scenarios and mods and stuff for older games so they seem better in comparison. But that's exactly the point! Why would I want to play H7 if it's in a beta state, has very little content and its outlook is rather bleak?

They should've realized how important this all is rather than doubling down on scripted campaign "experience" that's designed to wow the marketing department rather than deliver any kind of quality gameplay.

I will shitfling if the new mechanics are shit and not well-thought out. Skillwheel was good and i don't think many people would disagree. Alternate upgrades were also nice (even if execution wasn't always up-to-snuff). Multiple hero classes are nice too.
However, they also insist on either putting in shit that is i daresay almost strictly worse: Flanking is shit and makes battle end up looking like two well-endowed men comparing their russian pirate impression. Squares in battle map are also inferior to hexes, but i could understand that maybe its issue with large units in 3D (though i still am not really convinced). 3D adventure map is also generally less clear than what was in III. And don't even get me started on how many bad design ideas IV had.
But the biggest problem that every single game past III was released having much less content than III at its launch, both from gameplay standpoint and in amount of maps etc. And it shouldn't even be the case if games are so iterative (or even backwards), I'd imagine they could spend time on polishing it and adding content.
Also new universe is shit.
