Yeah, because コノヤロー is totally "bro"
>>2672657
野郎 generally means things along the lines of asshole or bastard. At least in the context that Arino was referring to.

>> No.2672778

>>2672676

Well, the "bro" in "Come at me, bro!" always sounded like an aggressive, sarcastic term, not like the normal meaning of "bro", and at least somewhat closer to the tone of 野郎. Besides, putting 来い at the beginning of it, I mean come on it makes sense to me.

I would ask what you'd suggest in it's place but it's honestly not that big of an issue anyway.

I might be a bit late to the party but it seems SA-GCCX is looked at as having loose translations, but they seem good enough to me. I'm glad they don't go too strict, and I'm glad they made fun of that kind of thing in that one special where they went super literal and weeaboo. That episode was funny as fuck.

>> No.2672884

>>2672676
don't be a fucking goon, let's break this down

来い = come
コノヤロー = this can go a lot of ways, but generally it is literally taken as "you bastard/idiot/moron/negative connotation word", usually used toward someone in an inferior position

Now, considering that:
- Arino speaks Kansai-ben
- Arino speaks very casually with his staff
- "来い コノヤロー" in the context that it was used in this case can be taken as "come and give me your best shot!" or something of that rough equivalent, "Come at me, bro!" is a fair translation in this context.

Right. I always took it to be similar to how in the UK we might casually call a friend “bugger” or similar in a completely unhostile way. Something like “Bring it on ya bugger!” obviously isn't going to work for an international audience, so “Come at me bro” is a perfectly good translation, particularly coming from Arino.

I saw the episode before SA even subtitled it, but, hey, way to make assumptions.

my point was mostly to argue that I could see Arino making a very casual, jokey/memey comment like that, so there's absolutely no need to be a tight-assed weeaboo about things and preseve the dignity of the holy language.

if it was up to you fuckers, we'd be drowning in a sea of TL notes covering 2/3rds of the screen, honorifics and lines like "You... You!" and "At a time like this...!", shit that sounds completely stilted, awkward and unnatural.

translators that win awards don't win awards for being literal, they win awards for keeping the language as close as possible but making it sound as natural and as literal as possible to the audience consuming it in their native language.

The movie is okay-ish if you are a fan of the show, but it shows they worked on a budget.
We heard a lot of weird things about the movie, such as Abe being upset with Toujima (the movie's Assistant Producer) for slashing costs with things like camera cranes and half the movie being archived footage - and besides the switch between 4:3 and widescreen, the difference in picture quality is noticeable.

Pic related, it's from the movie. They had to recreate the stage for the Mighty Bomb Jack live to shoot the scenes between the movie characters and the show's crew. Seeing Inoko MAX alternating his past skinny figure with his current chubby face is at least amusing

Looks like most of Tsuruoka's bad moments come from the 2007 Live (Quest of Ki).
Director Fujimoto stated that Arino getting the backwards warp at the last stage was Tsuruoka's fault. After several hours, it's understandable that such a screw up would made people absolutely mad at him. But seems he gets most hate from Toujima - that Tsuruoka sleeps like 20 hours a day and stills brags about feeling sleepy, with some rumors that he actually took a nap during the live show - one of the reasons they had to resort to Urakawa practicing Spelunker in Emergency Mode. Toujima seems to personally dislike him, as his editing of the live show documentary doesn't mention Tsuruoka and pic related during Bonk's Adventure challenge.

>his editing of the live show documentary doesn't mention Tsuruoka
It shows Tsuruoka with a new diorama of Floor 99 which ended up being completely unneeded because of a shortcut that Tsuruoka didn't figure out. It didn't show that Tsuruoka was the one leading him to the backwards warp although I know that's what happened.

>It shows Tsuruoka with a new diorama of Floor 99 which ended up being completely unneeded

(double-checking facts to avoid messing up again!)
Yeah, you're right. Basically, the editing kept Tsuruoka, the season's on-camera AD to a minor role. Adding this Floor 99 diorama to Toujima bringing the bonus stage tip in Bonk's Adventure and the Continue fail in Bikkuriman World and we may already have a case on why Tsuruoka was disliked as na AD.

Anyway, did they caught him sleeping on camera?

During the Q&A sheet where everyone said they disliked Tsuruoka and Abe called the Yamada a waste of a human being, the one director said to look at the tape, which implies they caught him sleep on camera. I'd assume it was just a split second corner shot if no one here has taken it and I marathoned the whole Kai special a while back with that in mind and never saw it.

The other big fuck up Tsuruoka did was direct Arino to a warp which would have sent him back to level 13 (effectively killing the challenge right then and there.) on the hundredth floor. Also Toujima was standing next to them when that occurred. Watch at the 47:43 marker of the fifth video to see the incident.

Also Toujima was brought in to block the sun for Arino during the overtime for Bikkuriman World which happened because of Tsuruoka's failed continue.

So you could at least see why Toujima was so bitter towards him.

On the flip side, I don't think you'll find a victory as sweet as Bikkuriman World, just because Tsuruoka's face and reaction was actual joy. I'm sure that rubbed off on Arino.

>>2687346
They also gave him a cameo video in the Lemmings 24 special along with Takahashi (the last time you ever see her make an appearance.) He's looking like a vagabond and playing his guitar under a lamp near a train station. Of course it's him singing the theme from 53 Stations of the Tokaido. And it was one of the few videos that made Arino smile too.

Oh god, I wonder who actually recommended this game - usually it's from the staff writers, so we can narrow down to Sakai or Kibe.
It must've been terrible to shoot this game and I don't even know who got it worse, Arino, who almost fell asleep out of boredom or Inoue, who actually had to finish the game and search every nook and cranny of it.
It must've been so boring that even Abe faltered once or twice, forgetting to frame Arino properly on camera.

I was walking down the streets of Osaka, just passing by small candy stores and arcades when I saw him. Arino Kacho, sporting his usual green outfit looking like he was getting ready for a Tamage segment. He looked back at me, I could tell that the sight of a foreigner put a tingle in his spine. Konichiwa, I said, in the coolest calmest mannerism I could muster. He stared back and said, Hai, Ohaiyogozamasu. Flabbergasted and star struck, I started stuttering, the only thing that would make my day better is if I was able to get a copy of his business card. M-M-Meijin? He had a blank expression, stared into my eyes for what felt like a good 10 minutes, bursted out laughing and said "Hahaha, Gaijin, Meijin? Hai, I amu za Kacho" I realized I messed up and wanted to say meishi, but Meijin triggered him to go on about how famous he was. Abe noticed we were having a conversation, he quickly pointed it at us. My mind was melting, I was going to look like a fool on camera. So I realized, I was going to have to do things to prevent it from ever airing, freeing me from embarrassment. I pointed at the ground, Kacho looked. Confused he bent over down to look closer. From there I pulled my pants down. Then I backed my ass up in front of him, he was still perplexed by the ground he didn't immediately laugh. He tilted his head back up, right in center view of my brown eye. He screamed ABUNNAAIIII, which was my cue to fart. Then we played SF2, I beat him Dhalsim. It was pretty cool.

Anyone else think Season 2 has the best lineup of games? I'm going through old episodes and I'm surprised by how good these games are and good the episodes are. Mystery of Atlantis, Challenger, Ghosts and Goblins, Konami Wai Wai world, Metroid, Solomon's Key, Prince of Persia, Megaman 2, and SMB3 (though that episode was pretty bad).

>> No.2705643

Season 2 has a bit of everything. Arino seemed to genuinely try hard to finish those games, Sasano was helpful without hand-holding too much, most of the show's main gigs appeared in Season 2.
The lineup was pretty good too. Most of those games do justice to the entire 8-bit Nintendo-Hard thing.

I like the original ADs too, for some reason the first four left a really strong impression, though Nakayama was cool too. I haven't seen too many of the newer episodes though, due to the inconsistent releases and whatnot.

Season 15 had Metal Storm, which was probably my favourite NES game of all time, so I have to give that one credit. Newer seasons are good too but I'm surprised by just how good 2 was.

Definitely agree with you. While the star of the show is Arino, he really shines when he has some interaction with the staff.

- Toujima was the OG, and those two banter like real friends;
- Sasano seemed the smart type;
- Urakawa has the "Ace" nickname for a good reason, being one of the most skillful with games;
- Inoue (Inoko MAX) has become the show's goofball;
- 1st Takahashi (aka Meijin) was the first female AD, and not good with drawings;
- Tsuruoka is remembered as the "artistic" type and the 53 Stations of the Tokaido theme;
- Nakayama is the weird, weird, but good kid - also the resident NEET;
- Emoto was also pretty skilled and is regarded as one of the most reliable ADs;
- Female Itou is a good artist, crosses in front of the câmera... and nothing much
- Katayama has this running joke with Arino always "forgetting" his name for some reason ;
- "Cardigan" Takahashi is pretty skilled too, but his persona as an AKB48 fan is often explored;
- Male Itou was just shy;
- Matsui was always awkward around Kacho and suffered the sexual harassment jokes;
- Yanai's also regarded as a smart one, but his Defense Machine nickname just didn't stick

One of the notable non-gaming ADs is definitely Watanabe, aka Black Kirby. She went along with all of Arino's jokes, even the most offensive ones ("he's insult comedy, et al", we all know this).

Now I have high hopes for this guy, Oosuka. Arino seems determined to have him stick with the "thief" thing and he looks like he's having a blast every time he's on camera, going along with most of the jokes

Whatever it was, it must've been some major dispute between him and the staff (or according to producer Kan, he "quit" before the show's airing).
I agree it feels weird, but back then they focused on different subjects. They were really role-playing the GCCX Company stuff, so Arino, as the senior staff, pulled the controller from him and yelled "Give it back and get back to work!".

Not to discredit Yamada, but to Toujima's merits, the Kacho-AD interaction began with him. Arino was already an established comedian, but his jokes work best when he has someone to bounce them back.

Anyway, apparently Yamada's name was featured in the ending credits until episode 04, and we can already see Toujima's name there.

(Picture related - it's episode 1 and 4 credits. Sorry for the terrible quality, I didn't find any better raws for S0/1 unsubbed episodes)

I recently decided to start watching GCCX for the first time.

I started at the very beginning with Season 1 and have been working my way through chronologically. I just finished Season 13. Is it just me, or is Season 13 noticeably worse than all of the prior seasons? I don't care about any of these games, the jokes aren't funny, and the "Shocking Videos Max" segments are terrible. AD Itou isn't bad, but he's not great either.

Just to avoid derailing the thread into /vr/ - /factory uniforms/, looks like they got an old uniform for Kacho in the Super Mario Maker vídeo. - I see your hands hurt. Here, use this Joycard.

- I'm... not a thief.

- (At some Tamage) Oh, it's 10 yen. Strange, I put 30 already.... (looks back, Oosuka is there.)... THIEF!!
(laughs)

- (another Tamage) Ok, so, to measure your strength, you gotta lift this thing.
- Okay (tries lifting object)
- THIIIIIIIEEEEEEEFFF!! (Arino screams from behind)
- (Oosuka still trying hard to lift the stuff) I'M NOT A THIEF! I'M NOT A THIEF!!!1

Either that, or Kacho challenging that Gradius hack with arcade-ish graphics, but I'm pretty sure that'd be a no-no (seeing that they even went the trouble to censor the entire footage when Arino visited Kuboken)

Agreed. My favorite GCCX episode is Kamaitachi No Yoru. I felt creeped out just watching him play that one (Clock Tower would have also if I hadn't seen that one prior).

I actually always get excited at most text adventure games he plays, been watching a few over lately, probably will watch the Oishinbou next which I remember being hilarious at how strict it can be. Well, Kan is his actual boss as far as the show is concerned since he's the creator and producer of the show. I don't think anyone has complained about the translation of the DVD, you're probably confusing it with the Kotaku translation/dub because the episodes on the DVD are the same ones that were originally licensed and fucked up by Kotaku. Discotek picked up the licenses once Kotaku lost hold of them and created the DVD, and they asked the same translator who translates the episodes we get to translate the DVD episodes, which they did. The Kotaku dub still exists as an option on the DVD but no one in their right mind should listen to it because it's real bad.

Kotaku's subtitles weren't TV-Nihon level but since they came with the dub they were worthless anyway.
