Ugh. Yes. All the time. I have an older brother who I had to share consoles with. I was always very careful with how I cared for everything, but he was the opposite. It wasn't a huge issue until we got a PS2 to be honest. He treated it so badly. He would never, ever put games away in their cases. He would use the PS2 as his foot rest while gaming. He broke our 3rd PS2 this way. He never washed his hands before gaming, and would always drink soda without any kind of lids. He constantly spilled them too. This is how PS2 #2 and #4 died. Thats right, I didn't just have one or two PS2s, I had fucking 5, because he broke 4 of them. Two to soda, 1 to falling off the table after he used it as a foot rest. I don't actually know to this day what he did with the first one.

Oh, and that 5th one? Because all of the games were shared, he took them all, including the consoles, and sold them all for money to buy drugs. Including games like Misadventures of Tronne Bonne, Suikoden 2, full .hack series, etc...

I've had to do general repairs on several consoles, but complete loses were very few.

A model 1 Mega Drive got destroyed because it was stored away with a weight on top. It crushed the on/off switch, splitting the board in half.

My Saturn stopped displaying video the day after I chipped it. I took it back to the place that did the job for me and they replaced the entire motherboard because they couldn't track the issue.

I went through two Xbox consoles, both broke. One had the problem that causes it to turn on/off by itself because of corroded tracks, and the other had HDD errors. Both are fixed, but I have no money to go pick them up again for the meantime.

My Master System, SNES, Sega CD, 2 GBASPs, Atari 2600, never had any problems. In particular, it feels like I could use my SMS to murder someone using it as a blunt weapon, and it would still be fine afterwards.

I had similar experiences with different systems. I bricked my psx doing a really hacked up mod with the spring out of a bic pen and some tape as far as I remember. I was trying to play burnt/imported games. That was pretty late in its lifecycle though, so I already had a ps2 to play those games on. That was my first time fucking around with the hardware of a console I owned.

My Wii is soft-modded, and some features don't work quite right anymore, but all around it's been good. There's some decently well-built homebrew software out there for the Wii.

Xbox 360s though. Jesus. I've fixed four of them for myself and friends after they got the RROD. A $3 tube of heatsink paste and 8 pennies is all it would take to fix that glaring design flaw with their GPU. It's planned obsolescence in action. Instead of a heatsink or a fan or something for their console's main GPU, they put a fucking foam pad over the chip. Zero airflow and no heatsink. Of course they overheat and brick peoples' systems. Retarded.

My snes and genesis from the first maybe year after launch both live to this day. I've never had a problem with anything from that generation.

nice satan trips btw. HAIL SATAN!

I dropped my first gen Game Boy hueg on the garage floor and it got a bunch of vertical lines through the screen. I was so upset but I called the 1-800 number on the back of it and Nintendo repaired it for free despite the fact that I bought it at a pawn shop. They said there was a recall on ones that had that problem or something.

It's a shame video companies aren't like that still, but when your consoles have a 65% fail rate I guess you can't be as generous as when they have a 5% fail rate.

All my other consoles from the 20th century are still working fine with the exception of Sega CDs. Sega CDs are pretty shit.

Only consoles I ever had stop working weren't retro.
My fat PS2 started giving disc read errors.
My fat DS had its hinge break, which pinched the ribbon cable and disabled the top screen (still works fine for GBA games).
My DS lite had its hinge break. I replaced the housing.

Of course the only retro consoles I owned as a kid were the NES, N64, and a Game Boy Color. The latter two being when I was old enough to care for things.

>> No.2667480

I didn't use my PS1 much, so my best friend by the age of 14 asked me if I could lend it with some games.

He got addicted to FFIX, it took a few months to see it. Then I noticed something weird: games were not loading at all. It got stuck on the PS logo and that was it. I was frustrated and he refused to take responsibility. After some time of being mad at him, he told me he threw the console at his brother for stopping him before he could save and he had to reassemble the thing.

A few months later, sure enough, with my scratched copy of FFIX and my broken console, he bought himself a PSone with another copy of FFIX. He would then brag about getting excalibur II and everything. I stopped seeing him. He was a massive homo. Fuck you, David. You son of a whore. I know you're on the street asking for money to buy drugs and I ain't helping your ass.

>All my other consoles from the 20th century are still working fine

This has been my general experience as well. As a child/young teen, I never had a single thing go wrong with any of my consoles; they felt like they were indestructible. Computers were the things that felt delicate in comparison.

I did, however, have a Game Boy Color stolen from me a few weeks after I started fifth grade in the fall of 2000. I made the idiotic mistake of leaving it unattended in my desk while I was in gym class (albeit zipped away in one of those Five-Star binders that were all the rage), and by the time I got back it was gone. Thing was, OP, my parents didn't buy me a new one, they said I would learn a "valuable lesson" about "being careful with [my] posessions". Couldn't even wait until my birthday the following year to get a Game Boy Advance. I had to scrimp and save allowance money for two years before I managed to get an Advance SP at launch. In the end, though, I'm actually kinda glad that my parents chose to act like total Jews, because since then I've looked after my stuff with the utmost caution, while my friends are all still breaking and/or getting stuff stolen all the time.

What happened is the same thing that happened to all of the other consoles. It's really easy to make a durable console when it's fairly simple. When it's one step away from being a PC, it becomes more likely to fail.

None of my retro stuff has broke on me. Original Xbox disk drive burnt out and I replaced it. Had another Original Xbox that had the corroded trace problem, fixed that too. Damn Xbox 360 the day I bought it had a faulty hard drive so I just got it exchanged. The new one I got failed after about a year but I had actually bought the warrenty since I had heard they fail a lot (plus that first one made me cautious).
