So yeah, it's around this month; we might as well discuss the series and whatnot.

I like the second game best, but it's amazing how sophisticated some the puzzles were in the first one. The branching dialogue trees as a basic combat engine; self-updating inventory with the grog jar(s) puzzle; hijacking the action line for comedy routine cutscenes; unscripted exploration with the "maps"; The Secret. It almost look like a consciously meta retro-style game made 20 years later.

I like the first two and slightly dislike the third one.
The one i really love is the fourth one, yes anons i do, i understand how people disliked the changes in comedy that went from childish to satire, and that made made the game different from the average monkey island; but i personally prefer that style.

I did appreciate the length of the game (not as much as I do know, considering the "episodic" model of modern adventures) and the embarrassingly high amount of fanservice, but Escape is just so bland. There's no atmosphere, no charm to it. Even the first games, tongue in cheek as they are ( and that, depending on who you ask, may literally be set in an amusement park ) manage to give a more adventurous, piratey feeling.

Also, that PS2 cover, man

MI and MI2 are some of my all time favorites, and some of the earliest gaming memories I have. I learned lots of english and complex words by playing MI and other point & click adventure games. Too bad none of my school friends of that time didn't play adventure games, or any video games as much as I did.

I remember being so hyped for Escape from Monkey Island (Monkey Island 4) because I heard it was going to be in full 3D, and when I finally got to play it I was really disappointed because it sucked ass. It played like Grim Fandango, but it was awful and it had awful graphics.

>How the fuck was I supposed to figure that out?: the game
>One kid in your neighbourhood would figure out that ridiculous puzzle everyone else had been stuck on for weeks and then hold on to the information like fucking nuclear launch codes

Still, I miss those days.

Ron Gilbert shared some production info on a recent blog post (OP's image comes from there IIRC). Apparently, he started to work on LeChuck's Revenge merely 1 month after wrapping production on the first one (obviously, without knowing wether it'd be a hit or not).

He also ruined everyone's day by reminding us Disney now owns the rights to every (most?) LucasArts properties, including MI. It's probably for the best if no other game ever gets made, though; if Gilbert got the rights back and Kickstarted his Monkey Island 3a (with previsible results), he'd probably go for a retro approach, like that Maniac Mansion/Zak-style one he's doing now. I know which board I'm in, but I like my contemporary games looking the way they CAN look, thank you, without fashionable retro affectations masking a lack of effort.

I saw some gameplay of Turok 2 recently on Youtube and I was amazed by how complex some of the mechanisms of the game are. I got really surprised that I got to beat those when I was a kind back when I played the N64, and something similar happened when I played Cursed of the Monkey Island. I remember getting kind of stuck in a part or another, but I got to complete the game and I'm really surprised with my past self for that.

Never happening. They already have a pirate franchise, and they'll keep it going and ruin the genre for everybody.

On Stranger Tides is one of my favourite books, and there will never be a proper adaptation because of those shitheads (great read if you're into MI, btw)

>that PS2 cover

I have this version (for the ps2) which is pretty good.

>There's no atmosphere, no charm to it

Absolutely not true, the atmosphere is there, but instead of being a classical pirate one, it's a satirical representation of our modern society through a piratey setting.

In short it's totally different, but this doesn't mean it's not there.

It would be a bit strange considering the Monkey Island series is supposedly inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean (the ride) to begin with.

It's too bad they (like most adventure games) don't really have any replay value. Aside from a few arguably-bullshit puzzles, they still feel like the cream of the crop of the entire point-and-click adventure genre. Also a satisfying proof that the Sierra way wasn't the only way to do it.

I can't really think of any particularly absurd puzzle solution in the first one. Most of the puzzles I found aggravating were the ones that required time and patience, such as building up the insult repertoire, or haggling at Stan's to buy the ship.

Can't argue about LeChuck's Revenge, though. I think it's the best in the series, but it contains pic related.

The only Sierra adventures I can replay is Quest for Glory (timeless classics IMO, every single one of them, yes, even 5) and Larry 6 and 7 (because of the voice acting, the narrator especially).
