Save the Homeland is a bit different. There are 10 different ways to, well, save the town and thus beat the game. Thing is you only got a year to do it. Most of the endings are pretty achievable by Summer however, so failing means you fucked up pretty bad.

Shadowman, you are the lord of Deadside after all. Sure you can run out of health but you respawn somewhere else. Pretty cool when you die in the living world because it then puts you into Deadside.

If I'm remembering correctly, in Alone in the Dark, if you're "killed" by anything that isn't an environmental hazard, you're not actually dead, but passed out.
While passed out, your body is taken to the basement and your body is then possessed by the game's antagonist.

Your body doesn't die, but your soul is cast out...

OP is probably asking for games from genres where you do in fact usually die, not sports games and point-and-clicks and such. Having game overs where your character doesn't literally die also probably doesn't count. Wario Land series is a good example of platformer games where you can't get a game over. Though not retro, Prince of Persia 2008 is another example of an action game where you can't die.

To anyone who's never heard of Chakan, he was a swordsman who challenged Death to a duel, and kicked his ass. So, Death made him immortal, which wasn't as cool as it initially sounded. So, Chakan has to destroy all the supernatural evil in the world in order to break his curse and finally die.

Whenever Chakan's life gauge runs out during a stage, he just gets banished back to the nexus, where you enter the various worlds from. No lives or continues, you just get booted back to the main hub.

The real kicker is in the ending, where Chakan finally destroys all the evil in the various lands. He shoves his sword through his stomach, and the credits roll. Afterward, Death laughs at Chakan, who is very not dead at the moment, and informs him that he hasn't destroyed all the evil he was instructed to.

Then he points up to the stars, and tells Chakan that the countless planets in the sky are also hives of evil, and need to be taken care of, as well.

Having nothing else to do, Chakan beats Death's face in once again.

Legacy of Kain: soul reaver. if you run out of life, you just shift to the spirit world. if you run out of life in the spirit world, you just get teleported to the very beginning "room" of the game. As far as i remember, there's no "you died" or "game over" screen
