For me the word "popful" signifies a blend of often cute or childish anime and manga aesthetics with themes or settings inspired by western fantasy.

Possibly also including low-res pixel art cut scenes in the same style, something that was especially common in games of the late 80's and early 90's, where either storage or processing power restrictions meant that rendering full video was impossible (though this is likely secondary to the primary aesthetic).

It can probably extend beyond games too, to manga like Ozanari Dungeon or anime like NG Knight Ramune & 40, though I don't want to get too far ahead of myself.

Man.. I really like his early style....
It's hard to describe, but just looking at his stuff makes me feel all happy in a weird way.

There were lots of mangaka trying to emulate his style.. wish I had a list or something.

I remember reading manga that looked like it was drawn by him, the world, the asthetics and themes ... everything was similar to Manabe's stuff.
It started with a blonde warrior girl and some sort of fox magician entering a tower anf fighting mosntersd inside.

People shouldn't dismiss the genre. It is important. There is something beyond just sexual in playing a happy go lucky, sexy young girl, who kills shit and saves the day. It's an important an very attractive ideal of woman, that the sjw nonsense and modern political correctness has buried in shit. Isn't that one good and valuable element of retro videogames? They are creative outlets of old ideals and desires left for us to see and compare with today's.

Back in the day i ignored the genre, but today i look back with fondness. My wife just read this and is really gung-ho about trying some of these, she likes the ideal they represent too.

Popful Mail was one of the earliest and most prominent games to use that style that actually made its way to America, one that embraced its anime pedigree instead of trying to run from it. I've never had a really good word to describe the more heavily anime-influenced style that you see in a lot of PC-98 and PC Engine games, but it's definitely something that always stuck out to me and felt different from other games at the time, even other games from Japan.

It was a huge influence on me, something that got me into anime before even anime itself. It may not be the most accurate word, obviously there were "popful" games before Popful Mail, but I think it highlights the game's position in relation to the 90's anime boom and the role that anime would play in influencing video games in the 90's, especially with the move to a more media-rich gaming experience.

"Popful-like" to me is even more specific. The game was designed to both augment Falcom's current Ys games and complement the original Legend of Heroes by having more defined characters and comedy than in Ys and Sorcerian; from a mechanical perspective PM's a reworking of Drasle Family, which itself was a reworking of the original Xanadu (and falls into your definition also, being a cuter version of Xanadu). In retrospect PM became a gateway-drug title Falcom pushed onto consoles during this period to get new players into their demographic, and the amount of albums and audio drama released for just one game is telling. All this reminds me of how Group SNE created Lodoss Senki and, noticing its success, made it their franchise de jour as a means of introducing people to other properties like Sword World and the Ghost Hunter series. Falcom tried doing all this with Legend of Heroes but eventually they made a sequel and so two games shared the role of representing Falcom to JRPG fans, not just one.

So for a game to be Popful-like means it's both standalone and representative of a particular brand or group of talent producing works around the turn of the 1990s/Japanese economic boom with accessible characters in Western fantasy-based contexts—the game's usually action-based with an adventure structure also. This brings to mind Landstalker (its distant relative Alundra counts as borderline) and Fray In Magical Adventure. Telenet games from this period have these qualities spread evenly, but not condensed in the way I'm thinking of. I don't think the protagonist's gender matters as much as having a strong personality, whether snarky (Landstalker's Lyle) or happy-go-lucky (Fray) or both (Mail). Each of these games are light and humorous on the outside but have thematically darker elements/plot events within.

If you want light-hearted anime cutscene games try some of Game Arts' stuff like Grandia and earlier. Else, have a look at some of the popular x68k and PC98 games Popful Mail is parodying, but you're digging pretty deep there.

There's always the completely retooled SNES and PCE versions of Popful Mail if you haven't given them a go yet.
