I was recently playing ActRaiser 2 and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and it got me to thinking: What are some of the most obscenely difficult retro platformers out there?

I suppose action-adventure games and RPGs with platforming elements also count - games like Zelda II and some of the Castlevania titles.

Son Son 2 on PC Engine. It may look adorable as hell but that game will destroy you. It's also amazing, like I don't even mind getting my ass kicked by it cause it's just such a nice experience hahaha.

This is a good one. There's also a translated rom and a fan site with tips and maps if you need help.

I figured it out well enough on my own and I have no idea how to read moonrunes haha. I'm not one of them helpless modern gamers. I even know how to get the magic mantle I figured it all out just exploring. I make enough money to get all the best weapons but the later levels are still super hard. Still amazing game one of my favorites actually.

I think ActRaiser 2 is pretty forgiving for the most part. Check points, big health bar and healing items are all there. What really pisses me off are the stupidly placed enemies in on the normal difficulty and that they choose to reuse the worst mid-boss, the goblin with a sword. The fight sucks ass and you have to go throguh it like 3 times. I can defeat most of the other mid-bosses without getting hurt, but not the goblin. At least they bothered to change his color. But it's still lazy.

You could view it that way, but to me that seems like a bad ending.

Holy Diver on the Famicom, game starts to show it's true colours on stage 3, gets real on stage 4, and throws everything at you in stage 6.
