You mean the Red Mage. They're like Fighters, except they can haste and heal themselves.

Fighters can do shit-all against deadly status effects until you get your hands on some Ribbons. Enjoy backtracking out of the Earth Cave and Ice Cave for healer visits after your Fighters get petrified and insta-KO'd.

This is why I generally never play as the cleric. That weapon is so incredibly OP compared to the mage's and warrior's final weapon.
