Shadow Dancer and Ranger-X are my favorite Genesis games.
Shadow Dancer's just a really solid methodical game that's like the original Shinobi instead of Revenge or 3. Better than the arcade game of the same name by far.
It's not too hard on default (major choke points are the bosses and stage 4). Final boss is kind of annoying.

Ranger-X is a graphical marvel, full of transparency effects and with cool wireframe 3D intermission scenes (that you can control with a cheat) and delivers satisfying mech action. Seems to have heavily inspired the similarly brilliant Bulk Slash on the Saturn (which is almost the same game but in 3D).
only thing is that it runs at 30fps

I also like the shit out of Kawasaki Superbike Challenge, if more for its graphics than anything else. Extremely smooth polygonal racer. Enable Turbo mode in the game's settings for best results (adjusts the FOV so that things are smaller so it has to draw less -- doesn't really hurt gameplay and probably should have been the default setting), although even with defaults, it's still the fastest officially released polygon game on the machine. Cheats like hell (road drawing is done OutRun style, so no 3D rotations need to be calculated), but all the scenery is polygonal and the other racers are 2D vectors. Really, really impressive.
Ton of tracks too.
There's an F-1 game using an earlier version of the same engine, which pushes more scaled sprites around than polygons. Didn't seem as fun of a game though.

Granada is a good runner up that I like. Cool soundtrack (if not amazing), okay visuals. The real meat is the actual game, you're controlling a strafing tank with a cannon that sends it flying back with the recoil (and you can use that to boost yourself). Also runs at 30fps, but puts a shit ton of stuff on screen sometimes.

Outrun 2019 gets a bad rap for some reason. It's no OutRun game, but it's fun. Gameplay-wise, it pretty much IS OutRun, but with a heavy futuristic styling.

Outrun 2019's got some relatively decent track design and does some extremely cool engine tricks (roads that can go above the ground/each other).
Decent music, nothing amazing.

Biggest things are that collisions and time are a LOT more lenient.
here's a webm

Graphics aren't the best -- they're a bit drab and depressing, although some parts are extremely impressive, where you're driving over this long-ass bridge with neon-blue lights going toward this huge-fuck cyber city in the distance.
too lazy to make a webm of that part though

I like the OutRun port on Genesis. Totally competent.
it really could have been better, but it's a semi-early title on the machine (I can't think of anything terribly impressive graphically on the machine from before 1992) and it gets the job done
also, which romset is the Genesis version even based on?
the stage order is different, there's supposed to be the one with the arches as the left second stage

man, I still think about a world where the Genesis was released in '90/'91 instead of '88/89, where it might have had some non-zero chance of getting some scaling hardware in there
like, most of Sega's big mid/late-80s arcade hits NEEDED scaling of some kind

2019 is definitely a solid game though. Other than it being really drab looking, I dunno why people seem to dislike it so much.
wasn't originally going to be an OutRun game apparently, it was supposed to be some Sega CD game called Cyber Road or something

Mega Drive sounds like PC hardware, not a video game console. In Japan, these are not as distinct as two different categories. In Europe everyone is poor and can't afford the plethora of different electronics anyways, so it doesn't matter.

My top 3 would probably be Sonic 3D Blast, Shadow Dancer and Shadow Run. Yes, I liked 3D Blast despite its flaws.

Some overlooked titles I'd recommend are:

Nobunaga's Ambition - I cannot emphasize the replay value of this game. Grand strategy games are very engrossing. This particular version gets the aesthetics just right, and IMO is the highlight of the series.

Viewpoint - An isometric shoot-'em-up similar to Zaxxon. I preferred the PS1 version myself, but the Genesis version shouldn't be overlooked.

Fatal Labyrinth - An early console roguelike similar to Dragon Crystal, which was on SMS and GG. Very brutal, but the game does give you infinite continues.

James Pond: Codename RoboCod - A fairly generic shovelware platformer that doesn't do anything too special, but if you're tired of Sonic or Alex Kidd and still need a fix for platformers, James Pond may be another series to look into.

Mega Bomberman - It's a port of one of the TG Bomberman titles. Definitely one of the best multiplayer titles for the Genesis. I could do versus matches all day.

Didn't like 3 at all tho. Moving vertically ruined it for me.
I wouldn't really have added Virtua Racing. Early 3D probably gets him dissapointed when thinking about other 3D titles he saw or the framerate. Super Monaco GP is a solid pick but might be too hard for him.

Maybe add at least one shmup. He might really like them. Can't go wrong with Fantasy Zone, or if he doesnt like the cutesy style, Truxton or MUSHA might be better.

Maybe add a fighting game too. Or even better, give him FBA with the full romset and let him win in Fatal Fury or something.
