Let's talk about some sidescrolling run and gun shooters, /vr/, which ones do you like playing? What ones have you cleared without continues?

Also, go ahead and vote for /vr/'s official best dev:

Oh, and check out M2's 3DS release of Gunstar Heroes, it's pretty fucking great.

I see that the strawpoll mentions Gunforce 2, that's a great game. I like all the vehicles you can use, and the faster pace than Metal Slug.

metroid series was probably my favorite

Alien Soldier
Contra 3

isn't there a crazy run and gun with zeppelins and weird ass mecha with like this weird WWII era aesthetic

I keep meaning to play that

Um...

>> No.2635564

My favourites are Metal Slug 3, Contra: Hard Corps, Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier, or at least those are the ones I play the most. Not exactly original opinions I know, but meh. Does Ranger X count as a RnG?

I would count it as one. Those are some of my favorites too, also Sunset Riders.

Have you played Mystic Warriors? It's similar to Sunset Riders.

I have very fond memories playing Rapid Reload with a friend as a kid. We never beat it but got pretty far. It's too bad that the few people who know about the game doesn't really like it.

>Ranger X
Great game, but I always wondered why they gave you a ship but never threw in any shmup levels using it.

>> No.2635641

Since SEGA owns the Ranger X IP, should we petition them to make a new one?

>> No.2635647

That would have been pretty great, and it's nice to see others here that like the game. I think a lot of people have trouble adapting to the control scheme.

It's literally Sunset Riders 2: Ninja Storm.

I'm pretty surprised that nobody posted about the Turrican series. It's not as frantic as Metal Slug or gunforce but the level design is very clever with a ton of secret areas, there's 5 upgradable weapons and nice Giger-esque aesthetics. It started on Amiga but there are 2 awesome Genesis and SNES ports.

>> No.2635673

>>2635672
Is there a table comparing the weapons? I was under the impression they all did the same damage.

>> No.2635680

I don't know if there's one, but I think they all do the same damage once fully upgraded. But in this game what matters is having the right weapon at the right time.

Not really, you're still dodging bullets while trying to kill everything that moves and memorizing patterns. Even rolling out of the way of bullets could be seen as jumping out of the way despite the game having no gravity.

Can someone tell me how to enjoy these games? I've always love scrolling shmups, but never got very into Metal Slug and such. I got Gunstar Heroes on 3DS last week and have been trying to get into it, ,but it just feel blah.

It seems like no matter what you do there's just a constant stream of enemies that all get blasted away pretty easily, but just keep coming and coming. There doesn't seem to be much ebb and flow to things the way there is in scrolling shmups.

At first I wasn't using the seeker gun because it seemed so cheap, but eventually I switched to it because I was getting bored having to stop and aim around to kill shit every 2 seconds.

Maybe they're just not for me, but any recommendations on how to approach them?

play expert.
Homming laser becomes useless

>> No.2638190

>>2637018
There's also Shock Troopers 2nd Squad on the Neo Geo, but unfortunately it's not nearly as good as the original.

>> No.2638198

>>2638176
But I started using the homing laser because I was finding slogging through the enemies dull already. Wouldn't playing on a difficulty up just make what I'm not enjoying even more tedious? Or does it change up the gameplay itself? That could be interesting.

I like GSH but at points it does feel like you have to inch your way forward through these endless waves of enemies. Contra isn't like that, then again Metal Slug really isn't either iirc.

>> No.2638283

>>2638271
Keep in mind it's Treasure's first official game. I like GSH a lot but the game is really all about the boss fights. Sometimes that bothers me about their games because the time spent getting to the bosses feels mediocre in comparison.

This makes me feel a lot better about my reaction to it. Probably just need to push more aand get so I can get through the stages faster and to the bosses.

>> No.2638414

>>2638287
it's funny because I tend to beat bosses extremely fast because close range moves and bullet-absorbing weapons do a ton of damage. Only exceptions are seven force, green and golden silver.
And BTW, another reason to play expert is you actually have to defeat all 7 forms of seven force

I disagee, Hard Corps feel like that, but Gunstar Heroes has great levels filled with enemies, on top of that it has great bosses. Alien Soldier if more of a boss rush game, but the bosses are so good that it doesn't matter.
