I have a really dumb question about spells. How do you cast them?

I'm just now trying to play this game for the first time and I don't get it. I have 'swing weapon' set to left mouse button. I select my spell and it says 'press button to fire spell'. Pressing left mouse does nothing. Where am I going wrong?

If you're trying to cast an offensive spell, you need to have a target in front of you. Other spells should work without issues.

When it comes to magic in Daggerfall I'd focus on support spells and attack with weapons.

Last update at all was over a fucking year ago. Forumgoers there said he hasnt even logged on there in a year. Safe to say that the XL Engine is dead in the water.

Either way it was fucking retarded of him to not give the project to someone else when it became clear that it would never finish. Hell OpenMW is full open source and it has fully playable builds now.

That Unity port seems to be progressing nicely, might give that a go when it has a playable build.

Also, with the exception of Spymasters, you won't get more than one successful response regarding a "Tell me about..." topic from the same conversation. >>2642561
The pastebin in the OP has all the information you need. The DaggerfallSetup you get from the wiki is the best available version of the game and it comes with the mod ready to apply. The mod applies to save files, since that's where the relevant settings are stored. Thus the mod can't just apply to the game itself, and since you cannot save until you've created a character, you can't just use a pre-set save for everyone. You must apply it each time you create a new character. You do so by immediately saving the game as soon as you spawn in the cave, without touching any settings, then running the mod and applying it to the save. When you load the "DETAIL" slider should be twice as long and go past the box like in pic related, confirming that it worked.

There's also two things I'd add that aren't mentioned in the OP's pastebin:
1. DagSkills is a non-vanilla option as well, rather than a bugfix like it appears in the installer. It raises the caps on all attributes and skills so they can reach up to 200 instead of 100. There's nothing wrong with it and there's no reason not to use it unless you're a purist who only wants bugfixes, but your game will work just fine without it as well.
2. There's a fix from /tg/ for many books where several words and paragraphs would run off the screen: https://mega.co.nz/#!PUUHDQwC!SqIWgQTn16o7ZTdxO67i_eo0FAc0Yl0d_HyL7q3NHMQ

>> No.2643616

>>2633245
It's possible that he intends to take the background option "I have trouble resisting diseases". According to the wiki, if you pick both that and "critical weakness", it underflows and you become practically immune to disease.

I tried it and I caught Witches' Pox from a "Guard the Mages Guild mission", but no other diseases. And I've fought a shit-ton of lycanthropes.

Main schools of magic you're looking for are, in order of importance:

Restoration - heals, stat buffs, your bread and butter. Regeneration effect is broken and you can customize it to heal half your life bar every couple seconds. But thats gay so don't do that.
Alteration - Resistance spells, Shield (great spell), and useful tools like Water Walking / Breathing and Slowfall
Thaumaturgy - Mainly for Levitate, the most useful spell in the game. There's also some overlap with Alteration on some of the spell protections like Spell Reflection and Spell Shield that can shut down those faggot lategame casters
Mysticism - Good for Recall and Soul Trap exclusively. Maybe Open if you can't be assed to swing at a door a few times.

Illusion and Destruction I wouldn't bother with, though Invisibility True is a pretty strong effect.

As far as the martial side of things, you will want to pick one weapon class as a Primary and stick to it, with Archery a solid Major. Depending on how you assigned your magic skills you will want to prioritize these skills as well: Critical Strike, Medical, Dodging. The athletic skills like Jumping, Climbing and Swimming are neat flavor but ultimately irrelevant once you have magic that can perform those tasks a lot better. Leave Running in miscellaneous; it increases stupidly fast and will be 100% by the time you're around 7th level.

A wise assessment, but I'd also add that there are some "magically locked" doors that can neither be picked nor bashed. Almost all of them are tied to some kind of puzzle or switch nearby, but they can all be bypassed with a strong enough Open spell as well. It's a great time saver to have one handy. You may find that it's more magicka-efficient to use a cheaper lower chance spell many times until it succeeds rather than an expensive one with a higher chance per cast. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out the best chance-per-magicka by fiddling with the spell maker. Mysticism skill can help a lot for that.

And this won't apply to most characters, but True Invisibility is extremely convenient for Vampires. If you need to feed you can cast it then summon some guards by stealing stuff in the nearest shop and they won't attack you. You can then pick one off without any others noticing your presence, so you'll likely be able to get some blood without taking any damage yourself, thus avoiding the reputation hit you get for being arrested or resisting arrest. One kill is all it takes to get the ability to rest back, so you can just leave the other guards be as long as you remember not to enter that shop again within the next 3 days without Invisibility activated. You shouldn't need a long duration to pull this off, so it's not a reason to actually invest in the Illusion skill.

Finally, it needs to be said that a magicka multiplier Advantage (2x INT or higher) is pretty much mandatory if you want to make a character that uses magic. An unenhanced magicka pool is miniscule even at max INT. You can also make up for it with enchanted equipment.

>these fucking dungeons

Now I kinda remember one of the reasons I sorta fell off on playing the game. The dungeons are mazelike as shit. Fetch/kill X quests are a pain in the ass because of all the samey rooms. Not helping when you have to do switch hunting.

>> No.2649172

>>2648970
Rooms have about the same variety as Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. Different clutter, arrangement, themes and all that jazz. I actually prefer Daggerfall's multiple objective points and huge dungeons. There's more room for monsters and loot. Plus you aren't forced to follow the same path over and over because the dungeons aren't linear.

With Skyrim it's easy to lose motivation before even getting to play it. All the quests and dungeons are exactly alike. Even when comparing radiant quests to regular quests. The dungeons seem to have more variety compared to previous TES games. But fundamentally all the dungeons are the same. They either loop from beginning to end in a linear path. Or they're a linear path that leads to a different exit.

>> No.2649272

This.

"Uhh, I got a quest with a daedric prince as an enemy but I don't have admantium weapons yet, game is shit."

There are infinite amounts of quests, and it really is no big deal to fail one.

THANK YOU!

I feel like I'm the only person who likes the variability of difficulty in Daggerfall. It feels so much more real than the back-patting, EZ-mode bullshit quests from Oblivion and Skyrim.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Oblivion and Skyrim also (hey, its all good), but I fucking hate the cheeky "oh good job, you followed the way point! boy wasn't that tough!?" that was present in Oblivion and Skyrim.

Morrowind was a happy medium in design for me, though, since I'm a big fan of dungeon crawlers, I like the sprawling, labyrinth dungeons of DF better than MW.

I think the fear of failure implicit in modern games is endemic. Games like Dark Souls are incredible divisive and almost controversial in their difficulty, but when you look back, MANY games had difficulty in varying degrees, and were more enjoyable for it.

Thanks fellow /vr/ bro you made my morning

So I'm on a mage guild quest to kill an atronach, I get to the dungeon and find out it's filled to the fucking brim with liches, then I find this room. There's 5 liches, a few zombies, and god knows how many mages just gangfisting each other. Needless to say when I aggro them they all allahu akbar.

To configure controls to mouselook with WASD and other generally better settings:

Open up z.cfg
Change "controls betaplyr.dat" to "controls viewplyr.dat" and save
Load DF save
Hit F10 to get rid of clunky interface at the bottom
