ITT: Games you wanted to love but just couldn't.

The art was fucking adorable, the music was good, I heard a lot of great stuff about this game, but my fucking Jesus is it bad.

You can't go backwards, there's trails of rings that lead you to jump into pits of death, the game missed a lot of great opportunities to teach players the mechanics of jumping and stuff at more appropriate times (there's jumps you need to make with down + b before you even see the first sign that tells you to do it, for instance. That's fucking bullshit, you don't even need that sign if you already know how to use it), your weapon is fucking dangerously terrible until you get an upgrade, there's a number of moments through the first few levels where hits are nearly unavoidable, and I ran out of time several fucking times trying to beat the first boss. The only time I was able to actually beat him, I killed him at the same time that the time ran out, and when I started the next level I died instantaneously with the usual time over animation, it was interesting and kinda funny but a fucking waste of a life anyway.

I also couldn't enjoy Super Mario Bros. 3 especially much, I was so in love with the momentum and collision of SMB 1, it will always be my standard for platformers. Otherwise the game wasn't bad at all, just a bit overrated for the NES, it certainly isn't the best game of all time, let alone that system.

Kid Kool, either, forgot to mention.
Again, the game was adorable, but it was still fucked.

My dude!

I was just talking about how based the inertial mechanics of SMB1 are in an earlier thread.
It blew me away that so many people can't handle that, as I happen to find it very compelling in terms of immersion.

From my personal experience, SMB1 + 2(lost levels) had this proper inertia and physics system where jumping was a parabola that factored in gravity. On SMB 3 we got some of that with less friction so you slippy a bit. Then in SMW, it got really slippy and the jump arc got a bit unwieldy especially with the run mechanic taken to the extreme. Fast forward to new super mario crap and it feels like playing a rubber ball in a perpetual ice world. Just infinite slip with the weirdest jumping ever. Unplayable garbage.
