Actually this game is supposed to be set in 1999 and it's about a guy named Tao starting an enlightenment journey off a buddhist temple. For some reason, you can travel riding a T-rex or a pterodactyl.
They even included it on the cover art. I wonder if the game manual gave off some sort of explanation about the dinos and how they fitted on the game's world.

People didn't live in the steppes of mongolia forever, and stories are passed down over many, many generations.

Remember that actual dinosaurs haven't been around for tens of millions of years, long before humans were as we are now. But the pleistocene only ended some 11 thousand years ago which is an evolutionary drop in the bucket. That was an era where humans frequently had to contend with many very large animals compared to what we have today, including many massive crocodilians and snakes.

That is where we get our myths of dragons originating. You were right that the mythical beasts have a truth in their origin, but it's not dinosaurs.

I will give you this though. Gryphon's were based on a large predatory flightless bird much like a large cassowary, and those were descendants of dinosaurs.

I find it entirely possible to believe ancient peoples also found some fossils that informed their ideas of what great beasts existed.

But unless you want to throw geology out the window and are serious about trying to compress earth's timeline so much that what appears to have happened in billions of years only happened in thousdands, then I find it hard to believe they saw living specimens of an animal that according to all fossil records we have died out before the Cretaceous even started.

I actually believe quite a bit of what's generally thought about as crazy talk, like that the cradle of Civilization was actually South America and that it's been around a hell of a lot longer than our history books usually say. I believe the evidence for existence that there were full blown human civilizations in the Pleistocene, predating the last ice age. And I think its from that era that many of our myths actually originate.

That said, I also believe in geology and other dating methods and find it hard to accept that certain dinosaurs remained unchanged for tens of millions of years without leaving fossil evidence like everything else.

>> No.2639024

not the anon you're replying to and I wasn't following the convo, but I don't find it too crazy to think that some dinosaurs might have survived in small groups in certain key places of earthm, like the congo jungle.

I will say that if there are actual living dinosaurs still around, the deep jungles of South America is where they would be. It's not 100% impossible, but it's extremely unlikely that a breeding population of megafauna survived all the extinctions that killed off the other dinosaurs, and survived unchanged for tens of millions of years. And yet, is so rare that they have left no other noticeable trace and barely been seen by humans.

So while that is technically possible, a far, far more likely scenario is that those people encountered a remnant of some excessively large reptile or crocodilian that we know were commonplace up to just 11 000 years ago.

Especially considering that there is rock art in South America which has been carbon dated to at least 44 000 years. Again, it's not that early man wasn't preyed upon by large snakes, lizards and crocodiles. It's that snakes, lizards and crocodiles aren't dinosaurs.
