is this magazine any good? the new issue has top 25 pc engine games

>> No.2625996

The magazine is pretty good actually but these types of lists are completely meaningless, it's just some random dude's opinions of the top 25 pce games.

>just some random dude's opinions of the top 25 pce games
That's all we can ask for really, I mean I don't think I've even played 25 pce games so he's got that on me

>> No.2626015

they had a fairly notorious article about Metal Slug
the writer of it jumped online to respond to critics
in all fairness he was a lot better at responding to his detractors than he was at writing about Metal Slug

i actually remember this, it was pretty hilarious.

But, idk if it represents the whole magazine which is why i asked

It's not bad, their annuals and anthologies are really good, but their monthly magazines are usually little more than pretty pictures and regurgitated internet facts. They rarely go out of their way to look for new information that nobody knows yet or write anything remotely insightful.

This. It's a nice magazine in terms of presentation, but it's really disappointing that many of the articles seem to have a research level that doesn't extend past Wikipedia.

In fact, many sentences in their articles appear to be literally reworded sentences from Wikipedia.

I buy this every now and then and enjoy it.
Kind've agree with >>2626051
Alot of it is "top 10 bla blah....", "RPGs to play before you die" etc... But i always enjoy reading their interviews, and their is some good OC to be had. I personllay prefer Edge, but obv that aint retro.

Retro is also a pretty good magazine. They just kickstarted their second year, I think.

Yeah, despite the flack it gets sometimes, HG101 is infinitely better. A lot of my /vr/ knowledge comes from that site.

ugh, I really hate forums. they're the land of autism. every faggot with nearly 5000+ posts of their name is an autistic manchild, always.

HG101 should just put out a bi-monthly PDF or something

My favorite is when some tard ends his post by putting his name on it, like he's afraid that someone's going to hijack his account or something

But really, not all forums are inherently bad. I go to Sega-16 and Valiantfans and while there are some godawful posters, they're fairly nice otherwise

they ain't bad. most of the time. their fighting game and final fantasy articles do suck but everything else that's not written by kurt kalata (who is a huge SJW) or john szczepaniak (who is a huge dick) is ok

Agreed. GamePro was a bunch of autists escaping into their autist-egos and pounding out barely coherent dreck about what the thought games were about.

Meh, for me it's just that everything is just a blatant commercial. Everyone in every zine was a shill. You still have that a lot, but it's not JUST that anymore, which is great. The New Games Journalism movement in the mid-late 2000s was the best thing that ever happened to games writing. You can yell SJW ILLUMINATI about it all you want, but it was people writing about game like actual human beings experiencing the artform instead of some robotic advertisement with shitty attempts at humor thrown in. I still go back to issues to Gamer's Quarter and smile every time.

What made Gamepro the worse to me was that it was basically Poochy in magazine form. You could eventhe cartoon animals and made up names were because they were (understandabley) ashamed about writing in it.

gaame pro was a complete piece of shit, with no redeeming value. but, I did get something like seven years of it for nothing. the era of 'complimentary subscriptions' was great.

I always found that the older mags were either full on-shillrags, or full-on unprofessional but honest opinions. I love it better than the unprofessional shill-rags that seem to be around today.

>> No.2630198

This magazine used to be much better, especially when they had the coverdisks full of free games, sometimes they included emulators. One included a copy of The Games Factory and it got me into game design as a young kid. Anyone else remember these?

>> No.2630203

>>2625985
I have been reading that mag since back in 2007, and in my opinion it is a must have for classic gamers.
Assuming you would rather have a physical magazine rather than read it online, of course.

>I always found that the older mags were either full on-shillrags, or full-on unprofessional but honest opinions
This must be an American thing. Super Play and N64 Magazine may have been single-format but they weren't shill rags. They frequently called shit out when they saw it, and regularly crucified games with cutting language.

The magazine was a professional outfit, had good graphic design and high quality funny writing. One of the journalists Tim Weaver is actually a moderately successful novel writer now. Dunno how many ex game mag journos can claim alumni like that, most had (and still do have) the writing ability of grade schoolers.

Considering how Anonymous has well over 5,000 posts on 4chan, your logic holds up.

UK mags weren't shill. A lot were shit, but def not shill. Rather than buy new mags about old games I dl scans of old mags that I couldn't have afforded back in the day. Try EDGE and CVG if any anons are interested. Even official PS mag wasn't shill.
