Aside from the obvious (Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie), what are some good /vr/-era 3d platformers? I absolutely love this genre and need more.

Rayman 2.

The Gex series, starting with Enter the Gecko. The first one was 2D.

Maybe Glover? I haven't played it, but I believe it's 3D.

Of course, the Spyro series.

I know they aren't retro, but I've heard the later Spyro entries kind of get rid of his attitude. Is that true? Is the gameplay still decent?

>> No.2621986

>>2621950
The Crash Bandicoot trilogy
Gex 2 and 3, which are decent (prefer the PS1 versions tho)
Bug!
Croc 1 & 2, also decent
Clockwork Knight
Jumping Flash!
NiGHTS (if that can count)
Napple Tale

>> No.2621998

The layer Spyro games try to be darker and edgier, and fail. The original series was more comfy and atmospheric.

The only games I'd recommend playing are the original PS1 trilogy and the original GBA games (Maybe just Season of Flame, unless you still need a Spyro fix after that)

Ah, I was worried they went the opposite direction and made Spyro stop being the cocky little bastard he's always been in favor of a friendly but largely personality-less hero (think Mario in the main series games).

Honestly, though, grimdark Spyro sounds awful too.

Going by what I've played...

Goemon for N64 is really fun.
Rayman 2 is okay.
Glover is pretty fun. It can be frustrating but if you use an emulator I wouldn't blame if you used savestates on certain parts (like the two swinging platforms in the circus world).

If you like the Oddworld games, not /vr/ but Munch's Oddyssey is a 3D platformer that plays like the old games,

Do you guys prefer 3D platformers that are linear obstacle courses or more open-world/exploration based ones? How do you feel about collectables?

Crash on ps1 one is flawless. Not the sequels mind you, but the original is unquestionably one of the finest games made in our time.

To add to that, the story in the last three games (before skylanders) became basically lord of the rings if you replaced the characters wuth dragons.

in both cases avoid n64like the plague. censored to shit and inferior level design. not trashing 64 but they butchered multi platform games.

The sequel to mystical ninja starring goemon on 64 is also great, but it's more of a 2.5d platformer

>> No.2623203

>>2623103

Agreed, it's the best platformer of the trilogy. 2 was outsanding and my personal favourite, it became less hardcore difficult though. 3 is a fun game, but only about half the levels are actually platforming levels. Most of the non-platforming, gimmick levels are decent, except those god damn aeroplane levels.

It depends.

Are collectibles required to progress? If they are, then you should be able to get all of the collectibles in a stage in one go.

You should never be forced to replay a stage because you don't have enough of whatever. Progression should feel natural.

As for what kind of platformers I prefer, I like both. Which one I play just comes down to what mood I'm in.
