Webm is inherently lossy and makes pixel artwork look really compressed. Gif is a much better format for pixel art; it looks better and -- for pixel art in particular -- provides a much smaller filesize.

Everything, including the Stardust Speedway segment, in the PC version's uncompressed cutscenes are colored flat. This is just an odd case where the Sega CD version looks superior.

To be fair, VP9 has RGB, alpha channel and lossless encoding support so with the right settings it's superior to GIF in every way. It's not the codecs fault that people aren't using it properly for pixel art.

>> No.2614728

>>2614712
>with the right settings it's superior to GIF in every way
Don't use the broad brush, it does not help.
For example, GIF will crush webm and even PNG when you're dealing with tiny low color images and binary transparency (icons, for example), because GIF has a much smaller header and handles a small palette about as well as PNG, if not better, due to the missing alpha channel.

You're correct on everything else you said though, and in the context of large format pixel animation VP9 will indeed destroy GIF without a blink. VP9 is quite capable, the users of it aren't. That's the problem with every file format though. There's a 2.53 MB, 5000x4592 JPG of a tile based game map the OP of a nearby thread. It's followed by a 502 KB, 7520x4320 PNG.

>> No.2614730

>>2614712
>>2614728
To clarify, I considered the "in every way" problematic. While GIF has a lot of shortcomings, there are usecases where it will beat every other option. In the context of large scale pixel art though, GIF can indeed not keep up. It's not a toxic file format that shouldn't be used anymore. Just with every other format, you got to identify its strengths and use cases and use it only then.

GIF is quite good the way it is, really. The compression is considerably more lightweight than pngs deflate, for example, and the headers are minimal and lightweight.
GIF is not about perfect compression. It sits somewhere between good compression, low resource footprint to read, ease of reading (complexity of required algorithms) etc.
As for the adoption, nowadays it's more important than ever to provide a standard and a reference implementation.

Yes.
I have been waiting for a format like APNG for too damn long, but it's just not getting traction to become standardized. Especially since when I'm animating I have to export every frame as a PNG sequence, because that's the easiest way most software can read it. The other way it's lossless AVIs that just take way too much fucking space. It's ridiculous.
And then I love making GIFs of video games, but I still have to stick with games with less than 256 colors because of the color limit, just having something show undithered transparency just fucks me over.

>I have been waiting for a format like APNG for too damn long
Sorry for the threadjack, but I hate apng with a passion. mngis png animation done right. With carefully designed modules and capabilities. apng is a bullshit hack by Mozilla devs on too much coffee, tried to be pushed through by force. It should never become standardized, because it's simply just breaking the png standard to make it work.

Mind you, we're on the same page in terms of having something with png quality for animation. I just firmly believe the way Mozilla went about it was ass backwards, rude and breaks more than it helps. In particular, their apng nonsense delayed any potential for adoption of mng. So now we're stuck with a proprietary hack that nobody serious wants (risk of breakage), a standard that nobody casual wants (why bother implementing mng when apng already works), and neither being available to the broad masses (we'll just sit this one out until someone else decides on one).

By the way, in my limited understanding uncompressed lossless AVI is very useful when capturing video output with high CPU usage, like an emu. The production of the AVI takes virtually no CPU, but a heapload of disk. If you got an SSD, that's a very valuable trade-off. That's just a transitional format, and you probably should either turn it into lossless compressed video for the time being, or, use it as input for the final lossy video output.

Likewise, PNG during capture tends to be uncompressed, to keep CPU usage down. Deflate is not exactly known for speedy performance.

Well, VP9/webm should be right up your alley, since it has a lossless mode. H.264 has one as well, I think. It makes little sense to write a dedicated codec for lossless compression.
We used to have a plugin system, so any browser could support any file system through the object tag. That was considered too complicated though, so now we have the video tag, and browsers need to provide the codec support through a library. We're moving backwards, in terms of lossless support on the web.

funny enough, it's one of the few things where Germany actually "censors" (actually, just prohibits distribution and ownership).
Normally Germany only puts games or other entertainment on "the index" (of youth endangering works). These are not illegal, but heavily restricted. You can't advertise them (having them on a store shelf is advertising), you can't sell them to minors (ID required). As a result, stores just won't carry these games. But it's still, technically, no censorship.
What happens then is that devs on their own cut material, in order to get around that index restriction, kind of like movie production companies cutting content to reach a PG-13 rating. It's nothing mandated though, and Doom or Quake were in fact legally available in Germany all the time.

With the swastikas though, products with them are actually illegal, may not be sold even to adults, etc. Also, the "documentary context" is actually pretty important. If I remember correctly, Panzer General has swastikas in its war footage cutscenes. It was debated whether these scenes were documentary in nature or not.

>>2615380
The high color mode is unrelated to the sprite size or sprite count.
The GBC does have slightly different limits, but the problems for sprite size are very related.
And yes, I like to look at my copy of Fish Files. An excellent and beautiful adventure game.

The irony of censoring ideas and material under the pretense of being dangerous, from an ideology which strives to censor ideas and material under the pretense of them being dangerous.

Back on topic, for a time, Cammy's outfit was considered too daring, and it was suggested she'd wear bike-shorts under them.
Personally, I think that would be just as sexy.

From what I understand the problem is not so much danger, but more that they wanted to prevent any groups to form under that symbol. It is an ideologically heavily overloaded symbol, especially in Germany. That's why this restriction is in place. I may not agree with it, but I think it's important to understand the reasoning, instead of just shrugging it off as governments being powermongers.

>> No.2615420

Also, I made that post thinking I was in another thread, excuse me.

I just think that censorship should be discouraged (it's not like there aren't Neo Nazi groups in Germany anyway).

Yeah. X is a JP-only flying tank game known for its first-person perspective. If you ever played smash Bros brawl, then you'll recognize the 'Tunnel Stage' theme from the game as a track in one of the levels.

It has an even more obscure sequel on DSiWare called X-Scape which did come to the West, but for some reason it belongs to the very small handful of DSiWare games which cannot be downloaded through the 3DS eShop. You need a DSi to play it, or maybe a flashcart (I don't know anything about pirating DSiWare).

MNG is an overcomplicated, underspecified piece of shit. There's a reason nothing actually supports it.

It sucks that APNG isn't standardized, but what else are you going to use? It's supported in Firefox and Webkit, which is more than alternative formats can say. MNG is supported in, uh, zero browsers.

>> No.2617934

It's a BS game, so don't expect a lengthy expierence. And it's not even translated, though not story heavy. But I think it's one of the best BS exclusive games and is very well made. It looks and sounds nice, especially considering the limitations. It even features a two player mode.
If you're making good money, totally worth it.

>> No.2617986

>>2617863
I don't think it necessarily has less value, but Tumblr has a 2mb limit on file size, so a .gif from there can be of notable less quality compared to a .gif of the same thing made for a 3mb limit (like on here). The operative word is CAN, if the .gif would have been 1.7mb to begin with then it wouldn't have actually made a difference, both Tumblr and 4chan would let it upload and it would look exactly the same on each site.

They also have a tell-tale compression/distortion effect on some .gifs which looks really ugly, usually a result of trying to fit more shit than you should in a 2mb .gif file.

Browsers are not everything.
As I said earlier in the thread, apng seriously crippled any potential mng support. Everybody even remotely interested in animated png (tiny tiny group) is either holding out for a side to win, or going "fuck it, we'll do apng anyway". It took the pressure off developers to get cracking and implement or use the vlc spec, while still being a non-standard hack, effectively lowering the chance of either format to ever be accepted.
