I've been playing a few of the modern brawlers lately like Castle Crashers and Scott Pilgrim and was wondering what retro ones I've missed?

There are the obvious ones like Streets of Rage, River City Random, Double Dragon, etc. I'm more curious about some of the lesser known ones that are still great fun to play.

Dungeons and Dragons on the Saturn is great. A perfect port of two Capcom arcade brawlers (except for the loading times).

Dynamite Deka 1 on the Saturn and 2 on the Dreamcast are awesome too. Especially 2.

Don't forget Final Fight. The Mega/Sega CD version of the first is the best /vr/ home port to my knowledge, but I'm sure there's an arcade perfect portout there on a more recent system.

Shounen Ninja Sasuke is somewhat similar to River City Ransom. It's pretty easy since with some practice you can do things like continually land flying kicks into an enemy's head without ever touching the ground, but it's fast-paced and enjoyable.

There's no English translation, but it's not a complex game.

So I suppose I am asking for beginner and general advice. A run down of the 4 characters would be very nice too assuming they are as different as the stats would suggest.

Going to try and answer my own questions with gamefaqs in the meantime. One of the advantages of a slower board.

Nope. Power Rangers is decent, but it doesn't come close to NWA, which is sorta a spiritual successor (same engine, similar mechanics, same developers, etc.). NWA is pretty much the best beat'em up on the SNES. However, when I say decent I still mean that it's good, so anyone that trashes the game simply based on its premise is missing out on a decent game.

X-Men Mutant Apocalypse is decent but nothing special. Once again, by decent I mean it's good, but I wouldn't play that game over the likes of:

Ninja Warriors Again
Batman Returns
Return of Double Dragon

It's INSANELY fast paced. Easily one of the most hectic games in the history of the genre. The coolest part is that you have two modes: A linear mode where you just keep moving and killing shit, and a non-linear mode where you're free to explore the world like in River City Ransom. Only downside is you have a REALLY SMALL moveset. Otherwise it's one of the most underrated beat 'em ups of all time for sure.

>Ninja Warriors on SNES is an absolute freaking masterpiece.

It is. Funny how SNES is weak for certain genres like beat'em ups and SHMUPS but has like 1 or 2 games in those genres that are absolutely amazing (Ninja Warriors and RTYPE3)

I'm of the opinion that SNES Batman Returns is also a masterpiece. It has absolutely nothing original in terms of gameplay, except for being able to grab two enemies simultaneously, but everything is just SOOO well done. SOOOOOO fucking well done. It's not like say Shadows over Mystara that offers immense variability and playing styles, but more like Punisher that just gives an awesome straightforward experience. The game has great effects and the moves are satisfying as fuck to use, especially the double-head-bonk.

Like 15 years ago, I used to think that there were some cheap elements to the game, like unavoidable damage and shit (i.e. Catwoman 1st fight, Penguin 1st fight) and that was the only thing preventing me from giving the game an A rating, but...

nope EVERYTHING can be avoided with skill, and you don't have to use a SINGLE test tube all game (except in ONE fight. the first penguin fight). I found an awesome pattern to beat both Catwoman fights without taking a scratch. I can do it 10 times out of 10. No test tubes, no mega-crushes. Looked through youtube vids and no one has figured out a strat yet that can take down the 1st Catwoman without taking a scratch, most of them use test tubes.

Anyway..

berst console beat'emups:

snes:
ninja warriors again
return of double dragon
batman returns

genesis:
bare knuckle 1
bare knuckle 2
golden axe 2

PPL are gonna look at my genesis list and go 'wtf retard', but nope. it's not a typo. in terms of game mechanics, presentation, and gameplay those 3 are the best for me.

Not a big fan of Batman Returns, the bosses were difficult mainly because of big-ass hit-boxes and long invincinbility times rather than cool designed patterns. Not a big fan of the standard combat and platformer parts either.

Return of Double Dragon has an interesting combat, but the game itself feels kinda unfinished.

So i have to go with SoR trilogy and Ninja Warriors for best console beat 'em ups. King of Dragons SNES is also pretty good but just a port.

>the bosses were difficult mainly because of big-ass hit-boxes and long invincinbility times rather than cool designed patterns

That's what i thought before too, but every boss is killable without taking a single hit.. 10 times out of 10. Not even joking - they are NOT cheap at all. But yeah, when you see Catwoman taking off half your health with a shitty roundhouse kick it makes you curse the game, but you can spank her ass for free once you learn her patterns and realize that this game is all about grabbing and throwing. Also, i hated the platformer parts before but they're pretty fun once you know all the layouts. But the beat'emup portions are excellent because of all the throw options. Heck, when I play I rarely ever do the combo finisher. It's all about jab, jab, knee, grab, headbutt, headbutt, throw. Double-head-bonks and throwing enemies with up+throw into a window is very satisfying.

Return of double dragon is better than a third of the games you listed here >>2611673.

A lot of games have unfinished content, so imo that's not a valid reason for not liking RODD. Super Double Dragon admittedly feels rushed, but RODD is a solid game.

did you know that Shadow over Mystara was meant to have an true final boss? If you knew all the glitches and exploits in Shadows over Mystara you'd think that you were playing some crappy beta test version. SOR3 with all the unused content such as the motorcycle stage? ETC

>> No.2611835

Batman Returns is a ok game, but 3 enemies on screen isn't my thing for a beat 'em up, neither platforming sections with a giant ass sprite. I honestly don't see anything special about it.

>Return of double dragon is better than a third of the games you listed here
Eh, i'm not the guy that wrote that list, and yeah i agree that it's better than some c-tier arcades and meh console brawlers, but still not a great game.

SoR3 while having cut content feels pretty solid all around, i don't feel the same about Returns of Double Dragon, you can kill pretty much everything with the spin kick and the game feels like running at 30 FPS (similar to SoR1)

About Shadow over Mystara, i never said it's great, in fact it's one of my least favorite Capcom brawlers, it's unbalanced as fuck, i prefer Tower of Doom.

>> No.2611841

>>2611835
ok, let's just agree to disagree, although you really should be playing RODD on hard (which actually gives many enemies a block/ducking animation) if you think that you can do spin kick and kill everything (actually, it's the back fist that kills everything). at least we can agree that Ninja Warriors Again is a masterpiece. But if you say something like "Kunoichi is the best character in the game, and Ninja is ass." then I'm gonna have something to say about that.

>> No.2611853

>>2611842
all 3 are absolutely viable, but in terms of efficiency on hard mode:

Ninja > Kamaitachi >>>>>>>> Kunoichi

t. can 1-life hard mode

couple things to keep in mind with Ninja:
-You can do the giant swing behind you by pressing Up-back+Attack.
-You can delay his combo ender. (i.e. punch, walk forward a few frames, punch, walk forward a few frames, combo ender)
-You can do crouching punches into his standing combo ender
-His combo ender hits behind him, invincibility, multiple hits, amazing reach, safe as shit, etc.
-His down+throw has RIDICULOUS invincibility frames afterward. So if you're facing 4 bunched up enemies. You can do the down throw on every single one of them, one after another. It does massive damage. Kunoichi can do equivalent damage with her down+attack throw (you have to hold the inputs) but it takes longer and most importantly she has not a single frame of invincibility during the throw, making it only useful against single enemies, which is pointless.
-His dash goes under most projectiles, and stuns enemies and bosses, allowing you to grab them.
-Kunoichi is absolute garbage compared to the 2 other characters, and the difference is especially noticeable on the later levels on Hard mode. Her maneuverability with her vault is nothing compared to the crowd-clearing ability, damage, and reach that the other two possess.

i love this game.

Not only the games you named are more obscure than Super/Return of Double Dragon, but are still a lot more polished, better balanced and with much more going on. Many of the game you say are "standard" are still much better executed than Return of Double Dragon. It's an slow, clunky 30 FPS game that its only appeal is the kung-fu gimmick moves, otherwise it's a mediocre game with only 3 enemies on screen, avoidable enemies moving up and down like just the original Golden Axe, and spin kicks and weapons that let you kill pretty much everything without getting much hits.

Better balance? LOL. Undercover Cops has shitty level design with the lamest last level ever created. Denjin Makai is a standard as fuck game. Night Slashers where you can infinite jab every normal enemy and grab loop every boss is well-balanced? Is you retarded?

>It's an slow, clunky 30 FPS game that its only appeal is the kung-fu gimmick moves, otherwise it's a mediocre game with only 3 enemies on screen, avoidable enemies moving up and down like just the original Golden Axe, and spin kicks and weapons that let you kill pretty much everything without getting much hits.
Are u Sanic? RODD has a deliberate pacing that works well with the moves and mechanics. Play 2 players mode once and you'll see that the game can support more than 3 enemies on screen, but having 3 for 1 player mode is a deliberate game design decision. RODD on hard mode is harder than most of the games on your shitty list. >spin kicks. Yep you've never beaten the game without using continues. Waaah weapons are overpowered. Nigger, I can list more game-breaking shit in more than half the games on your list. RODD is waaaay better balanced that most beat'em ups.

>TL;DR stop being a pretentious piece of shit just because someone disagrees with your shitty opinion.
LMAO you're the one who got offended that I disagreed with you.

TL;DR you recommended Blade Master.

Furthermore, I have way more indepth knowledge about every single one of those games than you, being able to one-coin-clear most of them. Have you played enough beat'em ups to the point of understanding what makes a good beat'em up? Or are you a recent bandwagoner that recently got into beat'emups and is impressed by everything you see due to the novelty factor?

And you have a shitty opinion, the last level was long, but everything else was pretty good. About other arcades being too "standard", being an stansdard Final Fight clone with new moves/mechanics is already much better than a shitty 30 FPS brawler with 3 enemies on screen and turdy combat.

I don't see how that's a game ruiner by any means. Hell, I rather liked them personally.

It's the fucking motorcycle stages that put a damper on an otherwise great game. It's a shame that Technos went bankrupt and now every Kunio title is doomed to rehash River City Ransom.

>> No.2614618

>>2614576
Yeah Cody's infinite is easier because his punch speed is faster.

Guy is probably the worst character, similar to cody but weaker and faster. Cool speed but really quite weak.

I recommend Cody if you want to git gut at the game, it's the easier to use, the knifes are OP as fuck. Haggar is my favorite and also OP but it's a bit trickier to use.

I figured Haggar would be easiest, and he's definitely fun, but I think I'll take your suggestion and stick with Cody until I improve.
Thanks for the response.

Also, what's the thread's input device of choice when it comes to playing these games? I play everything on an arcade stick when possible, but I'm interested to hear the preferences of others.

>> No.2614647

>>2614641
Guy is still fun to play, but just when you master Cody first. The thing with Cody is that it's easier to stop enemies like Andores or Gados just punching and using knives. Dealing with Andores or Gados playing as Haggar require more precise timing using grabs, jump kicks and body slams. See this https://youtu.be/6S6ar3A5Wz0?t=1387

Arcade stick is of the best, but i don't have one yet, so i play with keyboard, i find it comfortable for games with 2/3 buttons.

"Haha" no. Since last year, I only drop by /vr/ for a few days at a time once or twice a month. I don't play games much any more because I'm just burned out. But I'll play my old faves once or twice a month for a couple days at a time, and that's when I visit /vr/ to post. So I don't post often, but when I do you'll recognize me.

Anyway, from what I've observed, there are probably like 4-6 recognizable "regulars" in these beat'em up threads, while most of the other posts are from passerby and neophytes, or people that simply aren't opinionated enough so it's impossible to recognize a pattern in their posting style.

Some of the recognizable posters over the years:

1) myself obviously, you can tell which posts are mine from the big random blocks of text about glitches, strategies, tiers, etc even though no one asked for them, and the occasional condescending attitude.
2) the SOR3 shitter. This guy is an actual troll but I like the guy.
3) the Final Fight shitter who started posting here sometime last year (or maybe the year before?). I remember him being inquisitive and polite because he only recently got into the genre. He played SOR2 for the first time last year and wasn't impressed so I had to explain to him why SOR2 is a great game. Anyway, it seems like he leveled up quite a bit during that time. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy I argued with in this thread is him.
