Anyone on /vr/ into Medarot (aka Medabots)?

It's Pokemon meets Armored Core in that you customize your own mechs and then fight for different parts (instead of kidnapping mammals). Contains one of the best turn-based combat systems featured in any RPG (in my opinion).

Unfortunately most of the games are JP-only (most as in ALL of them, except for a remake of Medarot 2 for the GBA, and two unrelated really mediocre action games that are nothing like the main RPG series, one on GBA and the other one on the Gamecube, respectively). I'm disappointed that there isn't much interest in them outside of Japan to warrant localization for the new games or heck, even translation projects for the older games (the translation for the first GB game is 70% complete by this moment though, luckily). Most people know Medabots for the anime series and aren't even aware that there are games out there.

Anyway Medarot general. Tell if you're a Kabuto or Kuwagata kind of guy. People with moonspeak knowledge and people who've played Medabots on the GBA share your favs and mains (the GBA game is a remake of the second game for the Gameboy and should technically be retro, unless the rules have changed since the last time I've been here).

I played the first GB game but it's honestly pretty crappy. Is the second alright?

I enjoyed Medarots 2 Core, even though most of the battles became very reliant on luck. Haven't tried the others due to lack of translation. And I've always preferred Kabuto,

Played both versions of the GBA RPG countless times, was a huge fan of the series when I was a kid. Never got around to playing the JP only games, but am very excited for the translation

I fell in love with the series after beating the first last year. Now I have the Kuwagata version of every game (including 7 and 8 that I can't play)and several despairingly expensive figures. Really really wish we got Medarot 8 instead of Yokai Watch.

I played 1 (Perfect Version, for the original Wonder Swan), 2 (original and GBA remake), 3, 4, 5, Navi (non-retro), AX (non-retro), G (non-retro) and Medarot R. And the Parts Collection for 1, 2, 3 and R.
1 had a GBA remake too, Medarot Shingata ,with a bizarre artstyle. Possibly killed the series.

They're pretty simple and charming RPGs in the vein of Pokémon, but more guided by the plot. Nice graphics, comfy world (2 is the "comfiest") and very good OST.

My favourite Medabot is Baionet. My favourite game of the series is 2. I could enjoy it better, as the remake was released in west. R is pretty good too and it features all the Medabots from 1 and 2 plus a bunch of new ones in 3D.

This guy was the first pure Medarot I constructed in the GBA game (not counting my bro starter, obv). A bit of a weak guy but I've still got a soft spot for him.

How's Medarot R btw, is it any good?

It's good, looks nice, but as I don't understand moon, I find a bit hard to progress in the game.

>>2613427
Yeah. Like I said, possibly killed the series. Why the fuck they did that with the art? They went to the artist and told him to JUST FUCK THAT SHIT UP?
I played the Wonder Swan port of the first and I like the more "mature" take on the Medabot designs. Pic related.

The GBA remake of the second game (titled simply "Medabots" in the west and released before Shingata) is almost perfect. The one thing I didn't liked is that they changed the game to be more in line with the anime (2 was the base for the anime series).

I think they tried applying the Shibuya aesthetic (think Jet Set Radio/Slap Happy Rhythm Busters) for Shingata Medarot, but the end result was... yeah.

>> No.2615570

>>2615409
Jet Set Radio and SHRB are more graffiti-like. Shignata is too plastic and rigid. The art reminds me of Super Monkey Ball Touch and Go. Same artist, I believe.
The non-retro Medarot Navi had the same main artist of Megaman Zero.

I kind of want to get into this series and have been kind of meaning to for a while. What are the main differences between the Kabuto and Kuwagata versions of each game? I'm assuming it's more or less the same as Pokemon in that regard but I figure it's worth asking.

>> No.2615972

Shingata gives off a Super Milk-Chan vibe to me more than anything.

And speaking of Navi, part of me wants to see that series translated first more than the original GB games to be quite honest. The Medarot designs in Navi are batshit crazy (in a good way) and a big chunk of them haven't reappeared in any other Medarot game to this day quite unfortunately. Plus last but not least the tile-based combat system it introduced is absolutely friggin' sweet, too.

>>2615708
They're pretty much the same except for your starters and some version exclusives. Kabuto gives Metabee as your starter whereas Kuwagata gives you Rokusho as a starter. Some enemies have different Medarots and your main rival uses Smilodonad in Kabuto and Warbonnet in Kuwagata. The quests are the same in both versions.

It ultimately depends whether you like guns and prefer straight-up offensive fighting, in which case go with Metabee, or prefer swordplay and teamwork-oriented combat, in which case go with Rokusho.

I used to play the GBA ones on emulators when I was around 10, it was pretty fun.
I abused savestates though, because the game relayed too much on luck, and I didn't want to miss the starters (Rokusho/Metabee) parts.
The generic ones are easy to reclaim, but can you even get starter parts back when you lose them?
