These little guys are way better than the US NES, more sound channels with no mod, no self destructive lock in mechanism, much smaller, all you need is the controller adapter for NES controllers and a converter and/or flashcart and you're all set but what are the prices like? Where's the best place to get one?

I got a $20 famicom (plus $35 shipping or so) on ebay months ago. Similar on amazon a few weeks later. also, Got a famicom motherboard (no case, just the board) on yahoo auctions japan through a proxy for $8.28 plus $25 or so shipping.

They aren't too hard to get, honestly.

You do need to AV mod them or find a TV that you can tune to channel 95 (USA) on. If you AV mod it you have to deal with jailbars, similar to the top loading american NES. Lifting pin 21 really helps a lot if you do this.
Here's kirby on mine.

Another pic, in game. You can see SLIGHT jailbars in the blue background (or at least you can if I'm not imagining things).

It is far worse if you don't lift pin 21 when doing the AV mod.

Also pic of famicom with extra long controller cord connected to PVM-20L5

All things considered, I love my famicom. And I think the controllers look awesome :D

I'd go for one. They're cheaper than top loaders, at least. I've had both a top loader and a famicom, and of the two I'd go for the famicom.

I was gonna get an RGB mod either way, figure that's what everyone did these days.

>> No.2609583

>>2609570
Ah.
I'd kinda like an RGB mod but they're expensive for me ATM... and while I do have a PVM and would love RGB out for that quality, I'm satisfied with AV for now.

RGB would indeed eliminate jailbars AFAICT. I've done some testing and I think that the bars are caused by the RAM IC directly above the PPU's video out pin. the RGB mod replaces the PPU's video output and so I bet it'd do wonders.

I'd say if you can do the RGB mod then go for it!

>> No.2609585

>>2609583
To clarify, I have a PVM but RGB is too expensive because the PVM was free. That's how that works.

Note that you can get famicoms cheaper 'untested' - both my untested ones ended up working. One had a bit of a diagonal interference pattern even via composite - but that turned out to be a bad capacitor.

I've had the most luck with pre-'famicom family' FC's (the ones without the stylized "FF" on the faceplate). Those also predate the VCCI (kind of like the american FCC, federal communications commission). VCCI famicoms have been harder to mod and harder to remove the RF module from.

>> No.2609683

>>2609583
jailbars are by a trace running near the video out trace. cut and lifting pin 21 to then wire it to composite amp is the most common way to cure.

>> No.2609694

>>2609683
You can't have known this because I never made it clear, but I'm the same guy who posted the advice about lifting pin 21. I know.

And the interference is from the RAM directly above pin 21 on the board, from what I was seeing when I tested.

>> No.2609704

I was merely stating that the jailbars are still present on the famicom even after pin 21 is lifted (though a ton fainter), and even on the american front loading NES (fainter still). The bars are next to impossible to get rid of, but the NESRGB mod would do it by recreating the video signal outside of the PPU.

I'm gonna stick with my very slight jailbars and AV for now, though.

if you're feeling adventurous, you can also replace a lot of ceramic caps with multi layer ceramic caps

>> No.2609748

>>2609718
I'd not seen this before.
I'd personally not do that - I'd do cheaper 1.5uf caps instead. Ceramics are still very reliable and good... but I will look into it. It's interesting.

Thanks! Looks like I have a new project when my Famicom board finally gets here from Japan [I shipped SAL... will never do that again. Was shipped initially on July 25 and is still in japan waiting to be flown over. >:( ]

>> No.2609756

>>2609748
Well, wait a moment.
Just remembered that ceramic caps only go up to about 1 uf.
I guess I could do 1uf and 5 nf in parallel though.

buy a AV Fami; even better than the original, and you don't need a controller adapter.

I'm having issues finding the controller adapter, figure I'll keep functionality of both an NES and a famicom available.

yes, and on an NES too.

you can get expanded audio out of an NES as well with a fami N8, pin adapter and some modding.

that reminds me, anyone wanna trade my NES N8 for their FAMI N8?

And why bother with FDSStick when you can just use a flashcart and put every single game ever on it?

I own a Famicom. They aren't expensive to get and you can find a decent amount of games for cheap. I'm not the biggest Famicom fan myself though, otherwise I'd put in more money on a Famicom that supports AV or mod it or something.

>Why mod? I'd rather just get the Famicom.
There's not much to mod... it's just a matter of using a 95K resistor to join a two traces. Or you could buy an ENIO board, which just plugs into the expansion port and can be used to enable the expansion audio. If you've already got a NES and want a Famicom just to avoid what is the simplest soldering project ever, you are a retard.

>>2610937
>FDSStick 33/40 + RAM Adapter 21+
>Everdrive N8 109/118
They're both "not cheap". But one does a lot more, holds a lot more games and doesn't require you to rapidly press a tiny button several times in a row to flip sides. FDSStick is more for "purists" (autism) that want that "genuine experience" without all the bullshit that comes from damaged floppies.

I don't know how to solder, like at all.

Also Famicom is smaller and doesn't need the new pin connector and pulley system not to mention the 2 times I want to use the mic on the controller I can.

Don't lead the young'un astray now...

OP, theses kits plus a cheap solder iron are good practice. Soldering is a useful skill for retro games. Plus, it's a cool thing to know how to do.

>> No.2614303

>>2614274
Was this just a matter of adding a component to exiting solder joints? Yeah, I guess you wouldn't need flux after all. But I could see that being intimidating for someone new to soldering. The way solder behaves is weird if you're not used to it. It liquifies, flows, and solidifies in ways that will surprise you at first.
