Infocom games I have tried:
>Zork I
>Planetfall
>Enchanter
>The Lurking Horror
>Nord and Bert

Infocom games I have completed:
>Suspended
>HGTTG
>Infidel
>Trinity
>A Mind Forever Voyaging

Among those, I would say that Trinity stands out as the best, easily. And I was SO close to beating it entirely without hints, but missed something about 10 minutes from the end that caused me to get stuck. Argh.

I enjoyed Infidel quite a bit. It's much less ambitious and kind of stripped down compared to the more sprawling puzzlefests, but I liked the tomb raiding aspect and grounded puzzles.

FYI, I'm pretty sure that site won't have any Infocom games, because Infocom games are still not available freely. But you can play a lot of the ones the community has written.

Hey sadcat, you can subvert your unimaginative friends with gamebooks (those don't need parser).
http://www.projectaon.org
http://www.arborell.com
Home of the Underdogs also had a bunch of old 80's gamebooks scanned (there are mirrors of course...)

Most of the Amiga ports are free (legit) from back2roots.abime.net. Not all the Infocom games, but most of them are there.

Yeah, but the parser is kind of the point. Gamebooks are cool and all, but not really the same type of thing.

Despite the lame-o term "interactive fiction" that people like to use, the Infocom games were mostly straightforward adventure games. Explore and solve puzzles, sometimes with good writing and humor, but not exactly literature.

Bureaucracy. Had Hitchiker's Guide on my C64 as a kid and that's what got me started. Wish Activision would stop sitting on these and do a proper Steam release - yeah, I know you can acquire them by other methods but just for the sake of convenient play. What do they do instead though? Release it for fucking iphone/ipad, so you can use the virtual touchscreen keyboard. Thanks a billion, acti-dudes. A nice package for steam with artwork, scanned feelies you can access during play to get clues from, maybe invisiclues, screen res options (like render the client like a C64 or Apple IIe screen, etc.) and maybe even 3D models of said computers.

Yes so did I and the load times were........oh boy. This is a game that really would have been better on PCs where you had 80 column text and hard disks.

Was C64 disk drive slow or something? Or maybe you just loaded from tape?

These kind of text games ran fine on Amstrad CPC (which did have 80-column mode, and floppy drive).

I guess probably also C128 would have worked ok. Actually even old CP/M machines could play this kind of game.

>Was C64 disk drive slow or something?

Jesus fucking Christ, yes. 1541 drives were hell on earth.

>I guess probably also C128 would have worked ok

They did because the later "Gold" editions of Infocom games had C128 support which meant 80 column text, support for the faster 1571 drive, and more memory so not as much disk access.

The original 1984 release of HHGTTG for the Commodore 64 has a light gray background; the gold edition (two years later) has a black background. Main way you can tell them apart. We had the original 84 version.

I agree. It's been a good two decades, but I seem to remember the text being rather hard to read, especially since the computer was being used with an old 12" B&W TV.
