2596106 No.2596106 [Reply] [Original]

I'm deleting all the pics i've saved from 4chan over the years, but before i delete them, i've decided to share them in the appropriate boards.

Some stuff is only tangentially related to retro games but i'm dumping them anyway. Its mostly fan/alternative art.

Starting with Valkyrie Profile.

I'm not deleting everything, i have some really old stuff here and i'm fond of them. They remind me of different times in 4chan and the internet as a whole.

I'm deleting the pics that i think i have no reason to keep and i only remember they exist when i browse through my 4chan folder anyway. I've way too much stuff here, but then, i've joined this place in early 2007.

I can't ever fathom doing this. A 4chan folder is your own personal internet time capsule. I have had one since 2005 and it will continue to grow, even if I browse less and less over the years. Stupid mundane shit that nobody cares about is safe with me and me alone. When the protagonist of Pokemon Diamond was revealed to be a young Ocelot and we all collectively made bad jokes, I have that thread. When /v/'s first major get for its millionth post was pong, I have that thread. When Steve Irwin died, I have that thread. When some dude wanted to go to potatos to get his fuking power wrist, I have that thread.

Your folder's your folder, but at least make a copy of everything and just organize everything into folders. Don't delete that shit, though. That's eight years of history for you. Maybe I'm just sentimental.

Not really much to say about it. It was smiller and slower, you could post in a thread on /v/ and it would still be there next morning. There was more OC and somewhat less negative shitposting, and it felt a bit more like an insular community. It was possible to actually pull off funny threads like pic related. Politics were mostly limited to ironic racism on /b/. There were very few stupid threads like "r8 my dick" or "post ending in X decides what I text back". A lot more content was from 2ch and Japanese culture in general, people were less inclined to fuck off to /jp/. Mostly though it's just oldfags preferring oldfag memes (<3 u longcat).

OP here.
Back to dump a few more stuff before i go eat.

As for 4chan in the older times, what i miss the most from 2007-2010 is that you could be ironic, make jokes, satirize stuff or simply genuinely disagree with the general consesus without it being called "bait". "trolling" was simply making inaccurate statements on purpose to make people lose their shit.

Nowadays you can't make a joke, be ironical or disagree with the popular conseus anymore without someone saying it is bait and "trolling" has completely lost it's original meaning, people now genuinely think disagreeing with them or hurting their feelings is trolling.

This contributed massively to the downgrade of the quality of the discussions on 4chan.

There didn't use to be a politics board, duder. The racism was almost entirely people calling each other nigger (interchangeable with faggot) on /b/ and reposting that "around blacks, never relax" picture. Occasionally there'd be a gigantic thread about the global Jewish conspiracy, but few people took it seriously. There was none of the insane, constant hissyfits about feminism, lgbt people, and social justice like today. /B/ used to be truly random, a lot of that probably has to do with how many boards there are now for individual interests. I guess because it was smaller it was more chill, people weren't always so quick to get assblasted about minor shit all the time. I miss when we had actual Caturdays (post some fucking cats!) and there was no dumb Anonymous activism Chanology bullshit, when Duckrolling was still around and we'd post our Nanaca Crash scores on /v/, this is the story about how my life got turned flipped upside down.

I never went to /pol/ when it was /new/. But dont underestimate /pol/, there is some degree of truth to a lot of things they say, they say a lot of bullshit too but when saying the truth they are very coherent and reasonable.
You also have to understand one thing, a lot of people who say absurd things on /pol/ are people trying to ruin it's reputation for political reasons.
It's one of the very, very few places on the internet where people can anonymously speak their minds about the most controversial topics and share the truth without fear of prosecution, think about this a little.

Google "false-flag" if you don't know what it is. It happens all the time in politics and you have to be wary of it.

The problem with 4chan is when it became too big, more people started coming in, some of whom took things seriously. I remember back when 4chan trolling used to be bullshit fucking around stuff like pranking tech support, raiding a forum or Habbo Hotel, and trying to get literal camwhores on livejasmine or wherever to put shoe or keyboard on head or whatever. People turning Anonymous into a hacking collective or anti-scientology protest or whatever other "serious business" crap they tried to mix with 4chan culture.

4chan would've been best left as a place outside the knowledge of the "normal mainstream internet user," a place to fuck around, have fun, blow off steam, and discuss shared interests, all while stroking your harbl to porn.

4chan was really different back then.

Look at /b/, for example. At least 2/3rd of it is SWJ/Gay/Cuck/Furry/Loli now. It used to have maybe 3 topics up at a time in these catagories.

/v/ was different too. It used to be more like /vg/, where they talked about specific games. But now it's a containment board for argument bait threads.

Even /vr/ has changed, even though it's somewhat new. It's still pretty good, but we're getting to a point where people can't talk about retro games without emulator or flashcart pushers popping a squat on any and all discussions.

>> No.2599026

>without emulator or flashcart pushers popping a squat on any and all discussions.

That's because that's how many of us play retro games now. I have a closet full of carts that I don't bother to use because emulation is so good and accessible now.

Ultimately it's the games that matter, not what we play them on.

Also
>Look at /b/, for example. At least 2/3rd of it is SWJ/Gay/Cuck/Furry/Loli now.

I don't know when you got here, but when I started back around the Habbo raid days (just before, but whatever) it was already pretty /Gay/Cuck/Furry/Loli. The difference between then and now is that back then it was almost entirely positive about it. To the point that if you were posting on /b/ it was assumed you were a sexual deviant of some fashion.

Now those threads get made, but there's major backlash to it as well and /b/ on average is quite anti gay/whatever. Back then it wasn't with the SJW spin that a lot of that stuff has now though. That's more recent.

>Not understanding what SJW means

SJW = authoritarian left, as in people who want to censor hate speech, force communism on the nation, what have you. i.e. tumblrisms

To pigeon-hole SJWs in with general liberal parties or gay people is profoundly stupid. Liberalism (libertarianism) is antithetical to authoritarianism. There's a huge difference between someone trying to further civil rights causes because they don't have the same legal rights under the law, and some tumblrite trying to get "manspreading" banned from subways because it triggers their hypersensitivity. If you can't see the distinction, then please relinquish your voter card now.

I'm 31 years old. I've been here since the site was just /a/ /v/ and /b/. 4chan was always left-libertarian, until /pol/ was introduced and Stormfront started flocking to the board like flies to shit. I think it has something to do with the /b of old being actually inhabited by perverts and loners and the like. I believe I first discovered 4chan back in 2004 by way of a porn section on Shoujo-ai (if my memory hasn't failed me), or at the very least by looking for porn. As time went on, I guess people started to realize that raiders weren't actually from ebaumsworld and eventually found 4chan. I think that lead to the eventual influx of legitimate idiots who took the tounge in cheek WE ARE ANONYMOUS thing seriously and not just a comradery forming joke. Popularity and the proliferation of Internet jokes probably lead to more people visiting and more people who want to make 4chan into what they want it to be rather than lurking, learning, and enjoying the site for what it was. As with many things, popularity often becomes a detriment. To think that something as deviant as 4chan would ever become more than an obscure porn and joke site or mentioned in any non-Internet media or that it would spawn some bullshit news making vigilante groups would have completely baffled my mid-2000s self. There was a time when moot wasn't widely known, back when he was, well, just look back in this thread.

When I came back in 2014, there was /pol/, and most every board had transformed into a massive circlejerk over how much they hate SJWs. /v/ in particular was at the core of it. You can't go through a single page without numerous 500-post threads whining about "pandering" because a video game happened to have a gay NPC, or something. Just no. There is absolutely nothing in the rules about flash carts or emulation. We're here to talk about games. Not games only in the specific way you want to talk about them.

Insisting that people shouldn't be allowed to talk about Earthbound if they haven't spent a hundred bucks on a cart is ridiculous. And bitching about it being shitposting if they mention they emulated it is itself trolling. It has nothing to do with the actual game, it's just complaining that someone didn't play it the same way you did.

40something oldfag from 2chan here, here's what happened. In the beginning it was pretty much this >>2599118, 4chan and /b/ in particular was a haven for otaku losers and perverts. It didn't matter how weird the shit you were into, or the stuff you thought was because the next guy was even weirder.

Calling yourself a b/tard was like a badge, they'd found a host of other people who liked jizzing on anime figures and the comradary was good. Even for a day a week they wouldn't bitch about the guy who only wants to post hil Balto fanfiction.

Of course, it being 4chan there was always a lot of trolling. The design of the board being that you can declare you're a panty thief without being personally shamed also meant you could declare anyone who isn't a panty thief is a raging faggot. So everyone trolled each other, but it was largely good natured. More just venting than actual hate for other weirdos. Being weird was why you were here in the first place.

But then with the comradory came the realization that despite their weirdness, they were a pretty big group. And that's where the real fights started.

Some people wanted to take trolling to the next level. As a mass, go out and anonymously fuck something up just for the fun of it and because fuck ebaums world sucks. Others predicted what would happed and raged against it. To no avail, play fighting turned into real fighting and /b/ started to become a cesspool of bickering.

None of which stopped the raids, if anything it just encouraged them more. And with each raid, a few of the people who were getting trolled found their way back here. And seeing how easy it is to troll, set up shop. Every raid bumped poster numbers, every time. And the new posters largely weren't like kind of perverted otaku who had originally come here from 2chan and the like.

Since the raids often targeted places /b/ thought were shit like Stormfront, deviantart or something awful, those are the people who got attracted here. Repeat that a few thousand times all over the internet and you have 4chan as it is today.

All that said, I still like it here and the heart of what always made 4chan good still does. Mr homophobe stormfag can scream and yell all he wants about what a cuckold fag I am for licking another man's spunk off my wife's face, but he can't doing anything about it. And the very fact that he comes here to look at that and get mad is hilarious to me. That's just 4chan for ya.

>Even /vr/ has changed, even though it's somewhat new. It's still pretty good, but we're getting to a point where people can't talk about retro games without emulator or flashcart pushers popping a squat on any and all discussions.

We're on the far side of that now. It doesn't happen much anymore, as you may have noticed. So, you're right, but that damage is done and scarred now.

We used to have regular discussions about 'look at my recent pickup' and 'what games are you buying next'? But that heavy pro-EMU/Flashcart anti-Purchase trolling pretty much shut that all out. We really don't have those threads anymore, and when they do appear, people use terms like 'shill', 'jew' and 'L00K R@RE' when they don't just tell them to emulate or get a flashcart. It's easily the second most trolled topic type after Retron.

You'll have to go to the archives. The lack of existing discussions on these topics should be proof enough of how the community here drowned it out. It's not just video games though. Actually I'm not that much interested in video game consoles. Sure, I'll play some of them now and then, but my primary interest has always been home computers from the 80's. I started coding on them from the very beginning, making artwork, and even crappy music (I always sucked at that part). That experience can't be replicated for me through emulation on these over-complicated modern hardwares. The whole thing just feels ridiculous and wrong. Actually I wouldn't even bother with laptop if I could still browse web on Amiga or similar machine. Now I feel trapped with the modern hardware and OS because it's needed for some critical tihngs, but I want to spend the least time possible with those bad things. I feel no creativity when I sit in front of my laptop, only sadness.

I still don't get it.

Seems sorting through the pictures, deciding which ones to keep, going to respective boards, uploading the ones you're deleting, and finally deleting them — is a lot more trouble than just keeping them in your HDD until the apocalypse. I would do this kinda thing on computers in the 90s/early-00s when 1000s of <1MB jpgs would take up a significant chunk of the hard drive, but nowadays as memory grows on trees the HDD storage allocation for a 4chan folder is virtually negligible. It seems like you're creating needless work for yourself. Not a criticism really, just saying that your actions baffle me.

Not the guy you're talking to (who is probably just trying to get a rise out of you), but I would say of course it's not stupid to play old carts. And of course it's not stupid to buy old carts if that's what you want to do.

But when people come here and complain about the prices of old games, I think it's good to point out that collecting and playing old games are not necessarily tied together and they don't have to collect if all they want to do is play.

This helps in several ways. First off, it cuts down on the threads about "why is X game so expensive?" because people will learn to expect that if they're buying a collector's item that it's going to have a price attached to it.

Secondly, for the people who genuinely do want to collect games, it takes pressure off the market. In a microcosm, the less people looking to buy Super Metroid, the lower the demand stays and the less quickly the prices will escalate.

Doing that helps everyone, collectors and emulator players alike. The only people it doesn't help are the ones looking to buy games for the purpose of reselling at a higher price. But I think all of us can agree, that those people can go fuck themselves.

That's the thing, anon. These are games. Beyond whatever argument you can make for exercising coordination, reflexes, memory, critical thinking and so forth, they are meant to be fun. I'm sure many would say that leisure time spent playing games would be better spent on other constructive hobbies that produce things or help the community (disregard if you're someone who makes games for a living and uses gameplaying as study or someone who is a pro gamer or whatever), but you still devote some of your time to games because you enjoy them. You could try to explain why all day to someone who dislikes games, but many still wouldn't get it beyond simply acknowledging that apparently it is fun for some people.

Playing games is fun for me, but so is having actual carts and playing them on real hardware. Can I play games on my computer without the real thing? Of course. Would I still have fun? Sure (as long as it is with an appropriate controller). I like both the game data itself as well as the experience of playing a real cart on real hardware. Because I just do. Much like sex fetishes, I'm sure there's a deep reason why I enjoy it that way and why some are repelled by the thought of buying a game cart, but even knowing precisely why won't change anything. If you like it and it doesn't hurt anyone, then Gofer it.

very very 99% most likely they just failed electrically, and can have the circuit board replaced by another from the same model, the popularity of this technique means people keep their old 80GBs hdds that still function but aren't worth the sata/ide slot to plug, only to list and sell

you can have ppl switch the board for you for $20-50 and the disks themselves sell for that much as well, its almost a per disk value really, so a 10gb hdd = 80gb hdd
