>Morrowind's skill system makes more sense than most RPGs. Your skills naturally increase as you use them.
>Did you know you can waste hours hopping around cliffs or letting townsfolk pummel the shit out of you to raise your acrobatics and armor skills? Fun stuff.
>Did you also know you have to spend a shit-ton of gold or do a shit-ton of spell grinding before you can even have a 1% chance to cast a spell from a particular school of magic that you haven't specialized in?

>Final Fantasy II is mechanically broken, and it takes too long to level spells and weapon masteries.
>The game is so exploitable because you can waste hours beating up your own characters for more HP!

Am I missing something, or are the people criticizing this game trying to sound specious?

>> No.2595047

>>2595023
Usually, those who criticize FFII don't play Morrowind because they can't stand games without vanilla level progression.
Anyway, hypocrisy is a bad beast, don't get too mad about it and enjoy your games.

I agree with you, but this is approaching meme status at this point.

JRPG mechanics particularly battle mechanics do not compliment the usage based leveling system like an open world game like morrowind does.

Final Fantasy II *is* an open-world game. Grind enough and you can walk from the starting point to almost any location, including the final town.

Play for long enough and you can explore the whole game.

Can you progress to the end level without furthering the story?

It's still pretty stupid to call ff2 open world. Also it's a shit game no one but a couple autismos cares about.

Well its true. Also ff2 isn't an open world dipshit. Open world implies you don't need to grind for 70 hours to explore the map.

It is a game made in the late 1980's, of course it wouldn't have been polished yet, but it still managed to not feel as grindy as some of the other games in its genre at the time.

Also natural growth can easily be done in turn based JRPG's.

I'm not sure what you're getting at OP, but the game is well balanced as it is. I played through it without exploiting anything and sailed through pretty smoothly. It's only when people start messing with the system that things get thrown off balance and it gets too hard/easy. Their own fault for literally breaking the game.

>> No.2595460

If you have to grind do something that's not fun to progress in the stat system that's been implemented then there's probably something wrong with the system.

>Final Fantasy II *is* an open-world game.

Except its not. You go from one spot to the next like the rest of the series aside the MMO's and the end of 6.

You don't really need to grind them. You have to grind if you don't specialize.

If you want a little bit of everything you get a Red Mage, and you will be mediocre at everything which isn't worth it.

>> No.2596893

Recently started this, I feel like my mages' casting abilities aren't growing evenly with the fighters' melee abilities, since they run out of MP when I cast regularly while going from Point A to Point B, and then have to resort to their attacks until I reach Point B and can rest up. And then after the spell levels up, it costs more MP and thus cannot be cast as many times until your max MP levels.

or is this intentional so that the casters don't become too god-like?

FF2 has the second best mechanics of any FF and it's a shame that there's so few people who can see that between the "not traditional enough" people and the "too broken" people

I love Minwu's design.
Probably my favorite character design in the series.

>> No.2597021

A common criticism is that the story's cliched, but I'm never sure if they mean by comparison with games of its era or the entire human canon of written/spoken word media, including modern film. I am playing through it now for the first time and think it's pretty cool that a late 80s NES game tried to depict an evil empire story with thought given to worldbuilding.

You have to tough it out a bit, then start buying ethers. I rotate spells due to mana cost going up when a spell levels up, also lets me hit a few elemental weaknesses on enemies. You still gain massive damage boosts when nailing elemental weaknesses. Just keep casting and eventually you will get those mana point gains to support your spell casting.

>> No.2597819

Honestly Final Fantasy II could be remade but without the overworld/town split in 3D and it would be looked on a lot better. I love the open world as it is, but doing that always enhances an open world aspect.

The guys in the SaGa general seem to like FF2 well enough, maybe due to the overlap in game mechanics. I guess the converse isn't true? The only SaGa game FF fans seem to get into is the first SaGa Frontier for PS1. At least, it's the only one they ever mention.

The one that seems to be well liked is Final Fantasy Legend III due to is more traditional character growth mechanics with experience points and levels. After that it is either one of the two Playstation SaGa games, though it seems that most enjoy Frontier 2 more due to its heavier emphasis on story.

I believe the chance of your MP going up is directly related to the difference between the MP you start and finish a battle with (HP works like this, too), so blow a lot of MP for a higher chance for it to raise.

>> No.2598510

Morrowind lets you skip grinding altogether with trainers, so you don't have to bash your head repeatedly to raise your HP and decrease your MP. Raising stats willy-nilly is not the best way to level up, especially if those stats are your class's. Instead, the better course is to raise as many minor stats you can, then raise your main stats, and get those sweet attribute multipliers at the level up. Finally Morrowind is not turn based and retro.

>> No.2598518

>>2596926
That's more or less just a very big grinding area.
