It's way better than the original, that's for sure.

the n64 port is much worse than the original

theres always fog 10 feet infront of you, and it doesn't even have the Daikatana sword itself

This the game that caused LGS to get canned because John Romero convinced eidos to put all of their eggs in his basket.

I see it as a tombstone for competent follow ups to Thief and System Shock.

Heard the GBC verson is actually decent, for what it's worth.

I don't think I'm interested in trying it but I did try the PC original twice but couldn't get into it. Open mind and everything but just couldn't.

SO INTO THE TRASH IT GOES AMIRITE GUISE AMIRITE

The GBC game is a rather good top down action-adventure.

>> No.2591320

Honestly, the PC version is really good fun. The first 2 maps or so are garbage, but the rest of the game is very enjoyable. I think the patches fixed a lot of the game's problems (e.g., stability and number of saves and such).

AI is pretty bad, but you can easily ignore it by just playing solo co-op mode.

PC>GBC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>N64.

Daikatana is one of my all-time favorite games, I never understood the hate. The partner AI is bad, but then, even in 2015 there's no such thing as good partner AI. They actually work quite well if you're willing to micromanage them, or else you can just have them stay back.

The strategy guide is also a really good read, with commentary on the design process from John Romero, a cheesy comic, and an introduction to using the level editor.

The multiplayer is pretty much Quake. Three of the episodes have a proper rocket launcher equivalent, all of them have at least one mobility weapon, and episode one has the godly shotcycler which is just too much fun.

Anyone who plays patched Daikatana nowadays doesnt understand the reason why it was ridiculed. The game was unutterably busted upon release as opposed to merely janky and weird. Even now that it's actually a playable game, it's full of terrible half assed nonsense like save gems and the stat system. The whole act structure means that the game has an assload of weapons most of which are not properly fleshed out. Map quality and difficulty varies wildly. Using the title weapon robs you of experience. Daikatana sucks, it is awful. I can understand why someone would like it because it's not without character and is pretty hilariously 90s, but it is a great example of how not to make a game.

Yeah, I played it back then. It's not the first game that was just about fubar at launch, and certainly not the last.

Nothing wrong with save gems. For some reason, a lot of PC-only gamers have a chip on their shoulder about not being able to save every thirty seconds, while it's nothing out of the ordinary on consoles to have save points and limited saves. They were more than generous with the save gems and the system punished people who had to savescum every few steps. But because people cried so much, they ended up making the save gems completely optional. John Romero wanted to actually challenge FPS players for once by making them git gud and manage their own "checkpoints" instead of just constantly saving and removing any need for caution and memorization.

The stat system was rather experimental, but then Deus Ex didn't exactly have much use for swimming. You could ignore them through the whole game, and they only slightly affect your playstyle, but they made life easier.

The Daikatana gets stupidly powerful if you level it up, but it does keep you from leveling your stats. Weapons were pretty experimental, for better or worse. Some like the hammer were just worthless, others were basically Quake reskins or slight variations, and others managed to be fun and creative.

I think nearly all of the level design was really fantastic. A lot of people hate on the swamp and episode one, but I loved it. I play through it every year and yet I really can't think of any levels I particularly disliked. The level design still captures a lot of what made the id classics great.

I loved the characters, voice acting, and the story. It's just a really memorable game to me, and fun every time I play it. Daikatana isn't perfect, but I think it's really good. Deus Ex and Anachronox weren't perfect either, but people aren't willing to see past the bad in Daikatana and find the good.

just compare Daikatana to the most popular games at the time: Half-life, UT99 and Quake 3. Can you even imagine how shitty it looks compared to those games? so shut the fuck up.

Daikatana was better than Half-Life, Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 were strictly multiplayer arena shooters.

I really hate the term "Internet Age" so much. You can generally assume that the actual Internet was conceived 10-20 years before they say the "Internet Age" started. They think the Internet is the same as the World Wide Web and even then they don't realize how long the WWW existed before thr masses could get their grubby consumerist hands on it

It's not even that, it's just basic history. The non-commercial Internet still exists, but it's not what people think of when people say "the" Internet. I don't give a shit how old someone is as long as they aren't an arrogant retard

imho the game is not really that bad, but the higher you go the harder you can fall and this game was advertised like it would be the best thing to come out since sliced bread, that Romero would make us his bitches who would them kneel before him and gobble his balls for allowing us to play this cancer- curing gift of the gods.
Then the game came out... and it was... THIS?! That discrepancy between the promises and what then really came out lead to a huge fucking fall right on the nose and made it a subject of ridiculing for which it is known untill today.

>> No.2597151

I had no experiences with it because I didn't want to be John Romero's bitch.
