The secrets in Zelda II were arguably handled better. Instead of having to bomb or burn the shit out of everything, you'd stumble into unmarked areas by accident, or by venturing into suspicious sections of the map.

DW1 had the perfect atmosphere. I loved the feeling of isolation, and being able to go anywhere at any time. Of course, you had to do a lot of grinding before you could reach later areas without having your ass handed to you.

>> No.2580058

The entrance to level 8 in the second quest. You had to use the stepladder to face the mountain and bomb it open.

I actually had to call a hint line for that one. I had otherwise figured everything else out up until that point, including the walk-through walls.

>> No.2580061

Not him, but I remember off the top of my head there being a couple flat, featureless cliff faces along the southeastern beach with no indication as to where you should bomb, so you had to try each spot. There was also a burnable bush south of the central lake within a featureless wall of trees. I'm sure there were also other examples.

Needing to bomb and burn almost everywhere didn't bother me in the slightest, but some of the spots legitimately gave you little or no clue.

Wow, another completely optional area!
>There was also a burnable bush south of the central lake within a featureless wall of trees.
You mean the entrance to Level 8? Right, nothing suspicous at all about a single bush lying directly in the middle of a path on a screen where all the other bushes are clumped together.

Don't people normally continue playing games on their own? It's usually just problems stopping them (a game being boring as fuck would be a problem). Not saying Terranigma is boring, it definitely isn't. It's the only SNES adventure I ever sit through entirely, and I love it. One of the very few RTS on the GBC. On top of that, it controls well (be sure to read the manual or a faq) and even has a mild collect-them-all vibe to it with its wizards. While its AI is naturally not its strength, what it does is good enough to put some pressure on the player. I can definitely recommend it as a game. On top of that, it being an RTS, maps would be useful for interested players to improve their strategy.

The four builders in front of the main building are only part of the map for optimization reasons. As soon as you move them, the background gets replaced with normal map tiles. Either you need to draw all units (friendly and enemy) on these maps, or none.

>> No.2595369

>>2595309
Actually the water is problematic. The animation cycles for white/blue tiles where the water hits the cliffs and the rest of the water (the blue/black/teal tiles) are different, making it hard to get the right frame when screen capping.

I'm running VisualBoyAdvance, gonna try finding a way to control the emulation speed.

There should be a way to step frame by frame in that emulator but I can't figure it out. "Next frame" just unpauses the game.

File: 269 KB, 334x521, driver.png [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
2595489

>>2595472
as for the colors, that's quite simple, actually.
The GBC's LCD tends to "mute" colors, desaturate them heavily and reduce contrast. GBC developers realized that, and compensated, by using extremely saturated colors with strong contrasts, so they look "normal" on the GBC itself. In bgb you can switch between both color modes. The attached screenshots from Driver, for GBC, illustrate that very well. The bottom pic shows the RGB colors that developers used for night missions. The top image shows what that very palette would approximately look like, when played on a real GBC.

>> No.2595543

>>2595489
This compensation is why GBC games were so bad on the GBA. The GBA's LCD has a higher quality and as a result it shows colors closer to the dark and heavily saturated RGB values the developers only intended to use internally. Shantae for GBC is the only game I'm aware of that actually swaps out its palettes for ones made for the GBA, when it detects being played on one. So the game looks fine on the GBC and the GBA.

>> No.2595551

>>2595543
Yep. This is a thing on the GBASP as well. The Backlit model made a lot of the earlier GBA games look too bright and oversaturated, because they were made with the GBA/AGS-001 in mind, which has a similar effect as the GBC screen. Though some games made after the release of the AGS-101 were made with it in mind, if I remember correctly.

Amazing. Is there a high res version? Some nutter should try and link doom, doom 2 and final doom.

Not that I know of. I don't think the level editor has an automatic function for it, and tiling all the screenies needed together would be pretty bothersome.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT...

I completely forgot about this game, used to play the shit out of this.

I don't have a SNES anymore... Does anyone know if they ever re-released Blackthorne on newer systems?

OP is an NES game and considerably larger in terms of map size. Neither map is hitting any technical size limits for the NES

Would you ever consider hanging more recent "iconic" maps, like WoW or San Andreas? Not saying you must, I'm just wondering on your opinion, regarding the age, time and subjects of the maps.

I personally would not but I have seen some really nice Elder Scrolls maps framed online. The 2d maps on my walls show all the secrets and item locations so I kind of think of them as "usable art" in a tacky sort of way.

Good point with the secrets. I like that, when you played the game, you not only recognize all the locations, but have associated memories. It's like "reading" a very vivid summary of the game. That certainly makes it worthwhile wall decoration.

That's a very charming way of putting it! Not all of my gaming decorations are retro either, I have a Lolipop Chainsaw standee for three reasons. I was #1 on the leaderboards when it released, I love a Suda 51 games and she's really hot. Given infinite wall space I would hang a Red Dead Redemption map probably because that game invoked a lot of emotion for me.

It was on 32x and GBA. Also Blizzard has made the PC version a free download.
