Let's talk PC Engine.

What are your favorite games, least favorite, best music, best experiences, hardest victories, etc.

There's something about the way games on the PC Engine sound that I just adore. Mega Drive too.

Blazing Lazers, Star Soldier series, Spriggan, Rondo of Blood, Alien Crush, Devil's Crush, Detana!! TwinBee, and Bomberman '94 are probably my favorites.

Gekisha Boy is a really cool oddity/rarity.

Rondo is my favorite game.

I'm not sure what my favorite hucard is, either Legendary Axe, Bomberman 93 or Mr. Heli. Dungeon Explorer, Parasol Stars and Super Dodgeball all kick ass though.

I actually have not played Gekisha Boy

I didn't like Dragon Knight 2 and 3 that much. 2 just added an automap, a little voice acting and a lot of censorship, 3 made everything generic with its turn based system.
Dragon Knight & Graffiti on the other hand is a big improvement over the original with tons of voice acting, revamped game design and fairly little censoring to speak of.

I recently beat Ys 1&2 so that holds up as the best I've played thus far on the PC-Engine (CD).

Pic related also turned out to be very enjoyable, albeit short and easy. It's like a mix between Twinkle Tale and a *dash* of Zelda.

How's Gotzendiener? I've been thinking of picking it up since it's fairly cheap, though i hear it's a super short game.

Also thinking about getting Valis IV, since i have the first three. However, the Valis games are kind of hit-or-miss in the level-design department...

I love collecting for PC engine. These are all the CD games I have right now I actually just ordered a bunch more I haven't picked up games in a while and PC engine has some good value. I got panic bomber for like 12 dollars brand new in shrink wrap. It was so cool opening a brand new 20 year old game. These are my CD games, I have like over 100 hucards I have collected turbo grafx for years and just had my PC engine duo for about a year now.

Nice job on getting Monster World or Demon World or w/e it's called. That must have been tricky.

I've thought about picking up Magicoal, but the language barrier is daunting. I was able to make it through some other Japanese ARPGs (like pic related), but Magicoal looks a bit more text heavy.

I've also thought about picking up Final Zone II but without the legendarily shitty English voice-acting it might just be a so-so game (as commensurate with its cheap import price). I have Last Alert which is good fun.

if a game is text heavy I will still get it if there is a decent enough guide. War of the Dead has a super awesome comprehensive guide so I decided to get it despite having lots of text.

Demons world I must have got lucky on because I only paid like 50 and it seems to be worth much more.

I'm a fan of the CD games, though I think they tend to rely too heavily on showing off long anime cutscenes to wow us with their extra RAM capabilities (or w/e).

I'm looking forward to getting around to play those fan-translated hacks of Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys and Xak III: The Eternal Recurrence. That should be exciting. I kinda wish someone would translate the other PC-Engine Xak remakes, but hey, beggars can't be choosers.

>>2583880
Perhaps just misinformed. I only heard this news after I had my own Duo-R in my possession. There's a lot of fear of cap failure on these machines already, on top of the usually persistent (but fixable) problem of CD-reading issues. People just want the safe bet and for the longest time the R and RX were unequivocally seen to fit the bill.

talking about it made me want to try it again, the cutscenes are really nice and you can follow the plot somewhat even if you don't know japanese. The gameplay actually is pretty decent too it moves along pretty quickly and the graphics may not be impressive but it can throw a lot of enemies at you sometimes. The action is supposed to pick up even more at like level 4 I read too. For its price its totally worth it.

I don't know. It's definitely the most polished game in the series, but just like every other Valis game it has flaws that are very aggravating. The worst being how absolutely fucked you are if you happen to lose your powerups when dying to a boss. The game throws out all balance in that regard. This problem really plagues the later bosses in both Valis I and Valis III, with both Rogles and Glames in particular being unbeatable without a fully-powered-up sword.

Valis II on the PC despite being weird, a little glitchy, and with bad jump controls have the most interesting levels and mechanics (suits, weapons), and the best story of the whole series. Once you get used to how Yuko jumps the game is fairly easy to get through.

Why wasn't Might and Magic 2 ported to the PCE? Wasn't 1 a big enough success and they decided to skip to a newer game?

I absolutely adore Sapphire. I suck at it. Suck hard. But aesthetically it is everything I have ever wanted from a game. Those low-res pixel art anime cut scenes are what I came to the PCECD for.

I plan on saving up to buy one soon are Turboduo R the way to go with RGB recapped? And if i plan on getting an everdrive would the arcade card work or would i have to buy that separately?

Good idea
Have weapons and upgrades drop to certain checkpoint values on death

Bad idea
Have only 3 checkpoints and require 7 items to reach tier

The Turboduo R with a recap should be a good way to go.

As for the everdrive, it sadly does not act as an Arcade Card; you would have to buy that separately. I -think- it does act as a backup memory card, but I'm not sure.

the only reason to buy the R or RX over a regular duo was cause of the caps, why spend the extra money if youre going to recap it anyway?

>>2593029
my mistake; I got the versions confused.

Turboduo + recapped should be as good as a Turboduo R/Pc Engine Duo-R

Though be warned that older CD drives can be finicky things and there may need to be some maintenance or fiddling with them to make sure they work consistently.

Yeah I bought a refurbed duo and its been great, I think they might have actually replaced with opitcal reader on it too. I want to pick up a spare cause I want to start playing burned discs and I am scared of wearing out my laser.

Man I love my old Turbo Graph. I was lucky enough to get one as a console before the snes and genesis were released. It felt like a great improvement over the nes and sms at the time.

I actually just got Parasol Stars last year, found it in a thrift shop for 5 bucks. Its pretty good but my favorite hucard game was and still is Blazing Lazers. My favorite music would have to be the soundtrack to Devils Crush, another game I still play sometimes. I would say my favorite experience would be playing Cadash with my little brother, he would be the ninja and id be the priest. Playing Cadash with the flail wielding priest is literally like playing a cross between Castlevania and one of the DnD arcade games.

Had a horrible English voice cast but damn this game was fun to play.

I was pleasantly suprised with Last Alert. I expected it to be a shitty game with the notoriety of awful voice-acting, like Deep Fear or Final Zone 2, but it is pretty fun if simplistic overhead shooter.

I just played Image Fight 2 on the Turbo CD. Not as cool as the original, but OK.

>ALL DISCS ARE BURNT SOMEHOW
No they aren't. The process of creating mass-produced CDs from a master is different from writing to a disc using your CD burner.

I don't know jackshit about the pc engine honestly so I'm just trying to ask alot of questions from people who already own it before i make my decision. The duo r has a headphone jack in it right?

CDs are pressed not burned you shitty

>> No.2594792

>>2594453

so what's your theory? because a game isn't original it's going to punish your console for being a sinner?? please explain how a burnt CD will in any shape or form damage a unit created for reading CDs. Because a burnt CD is obviously going to make the laser reflect differently and shoot the console's eyes out, right? sheeesh

>> No.2594798

>>2594792

or is the CD burner going to run out of laser? kekeke

>> No.2594884

>>2594792
or that since its a burned surface not a pressed on the drive has to access more cause it has a harder time reading the disc thus putting more wear on the laser
