It's like a faster dangun feveron with a reflect mechanic. Lightning fast bullets and no focus movement. Did I mention it's fast cause I think I kinda danced around the issue.
Your three weapons are activated by a single button at different timings, so when you want to repeatedly use your shotgun for example you mash the button at a different rhythm. Holding the button down all the way explodes a full screen bomb. Holding for a bit and letting go gives you a small invincibility shield.
Reflecting bullets will release cubes which power up your main weapon. Meaning you must milk that score in order to survive. This score grinding mechanic is further expanded in the dreamcast port where you must spend points in an ingame shop to unlock features.
It's extremely hard with a pumping techno soundtrack. It's Mars Matrix. Play Mars Matrix.

Shinobu yagawa, but seriously it's a game that just becomes better and better the more you learn also every ship you can play as has different strategic nuances if you are playing for score. No matter how much you memorise the game there will always be something slightly different in every game forcing you to use reflex and intuition aswell be it position and timing of medal drops or your ships positioning when enemies aim at you.

Because anon, Garegga is arguably the seminal game of the genre. Before Garegga, you had your traditional vertical games, and the refinements thereof. Sure, there were occasional deviations from form (Recca, Batsugun and Donpachi come to mind), but on the whole, no one had figured out how to make a bullet hell game click.

But the madman S. Yagawa, a fresh hire at Raizing, decided to make a truly original shooting experience. He had hit upon the idea of a dynamic rank system, in an effort to engage players at the game center, some RNG elements to keep the game from being pre-routed, as most arcade shooting games could be, and uncharacteristically dense and mind-warping patterns for an arcade game of the period (knowing Yagawa, this was probably no coincidence).

Fast forward a bit, the game is coming together, and it comes out in arcades. Players are blown away by the essentially perfect stepping stone between traditional shooting and bullet hell.

But don't take my rambling word for it. I'll link what I can to spread the magic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VisS7_ROmYw The world record for Garegga as of time of writing. With extensive annotations by both the uploader and the player. Should be mandatory watching for anyone with even a cursory interest in the game. (also make sure that you have stereo speakers or headphones, or else the audio on the replay is damaged and you won't be able to hear the pulsing OST)

http://shmuplations.com/scorer4/ Earlier interview with the player, also recommended reading. But idk, I feel I have to cap off the worthless rambling I'm doing somewhere. ^.^

There's a rank value that changes the amount and speed of enemy bullets fired at you. Basically Higher Rank = More Difficulty.
The rank goes up every time you collect power ups, medals, bombs and lives.
Bombing, dying, staying in your last life, avoiding powerups keeps the rank down. The rank also goes up the longer you stay alive by means of a timer that's always counting up. There's more to that but that's the gist of it.

Isn't that a double-edged sword? On one hand you have a complex shooter, on the other a game that has way too much hidden shit to understand the game playing it normally. On the one hand, straightforward arcade games are very nice. But on the other hand, everything is going to have nuances to it at one point or another, and sooner or later, you'll either be forced to consult guides, or, if guides aren't available, use lateral thinking to weed yourself out of whatever conundrum is facing you. For simple survival play, it doesn't matter too much (just know that the rank system exists, know to not hoard resources, suicide occasionally, etc.) and it's a relatively simple clear. But Garegga's main strength is it's scoring play anyways, so you're going to be missing out on a lot. (if you just play games for survival and want a screen filled with bullets, Cave games are inarguably superior).

>> No.2576547

>>2576537
Not really, the spawn points and medal drops are always the same. If you play by a certain route, always collecting the same stuff and dying at the same places your rank value will MOSTLY tend to stay the same.
There was another Yagawa game, Armed Police Batrider which was even more random and it also had rank bullshit. In that game the stage order is always random, the final boss is dependent on what order you got, you might or might not fight special bosses depending on ramdom conditions and every time you die you're forced to switch to a different weapon/character.

Speaking of arcade racing games, everyone on /vr/ should immediately try out Double Axle. I just only recently discovered this game and I can say without hyperbole that it's one of the best unknown racing games of all time. The handling is about what you're expect from a sprite scaling 2D/pseudo-3D racing game, but it just feels RIGHT for the type of game that it is and it really feels like you're driving this HUGE FUCKING TRUCK. Plus you can drive over trees and houses and boulders and shit that are on the side of the road, which is hilariously awesome. Just a stupidly fun game.

I'm so bored of reading this bullshit perspective... For one contrary to plebular belief the shmups genre has a lot less to do with speedy reflexes and alot more to do with memorization, execution and improving your probabilities in situations. If you are playing on intuition and reflexes alone you will get no where. As for garegga well it depends on the individual you can figure alot of it's fundamentals out alone just by having an attentive attitude and using trial and error but for the more subtle nuances it's this depth that has given the game its 20 year longevity amongst the score players and that's why it's so highly regarded. I prefer Ibara personally but garegga is fully worthy of it's praise. Why can't every type of arcade game exist anyway? I hate it when people talk about "arcade games SHOULD be" to suit there own desires, if you don't like it play something else but there is room for every system of play in this genre.

Fuck me i've spent all morning so far correcting inaccurate bullshit in shmup threads here seriously you guys are clueless.... everything you said is wrong, the stage order can be selectable every player turns that function on in the dip switches, I assume you are talking about normal mode also and no the finals bosses arn't random they, 1 you will always get and the other 2 will appear if you have collected a special power up item and special option item before that point. Other bosses in the game are relatable to the characters you play so if you have a mahou char in stock and still alive at the various points the mahou bosses will appear same with garegga. Go watch a decent player and you'l see they fight the same people and execute the same suicides and player order every time and you couldn't even get the player death thing right..... the game allows you to play as either a team, a team you select the individuals for yourself or an individual player so maybe try that if 3 diff chars is to much for you. Now go away and stop spreading misinformation.

Look at kamui the Garegga WR holder she has been playing that game for donkeys years and just loves it to the point she has no interest in any other shmup. If you only play to prove a point or solely to be the best then yeah you're going to end up frustrated and miserable with it.

Yep infact only recently one of the top japanese players who has been back n forth on the game for years has just no missed the game with a crazy score and no doubt the wr will be beaten again.

It's better than Hang-On, an already great game, in every way.
The supercharger adds quite a bit of depth to the game instead of feeling tacked-on, like in Turbo Out Run. There's tons of content racing-wise and four great tunes, as well.
Honestly, I can't think of any flaws.

More whining from a guy who just can't seem to accept the concept of variety amongst arcade games. Fyi all that is known today about garegga was discovered by players who to nobodies surprise just played the game alot.... the only thing the internet did is allow more contributors to the info pool and the information to travel further and be quicker to digest than during the pre-internet arcade community days. Try claiming it as a negative till you go blue in the face it still all equates to you're for some reason annoyed by a game that you can't grasp, understand or play so it suits your ego more to blame the game instead of yourself for being ass and not just playing something else you prefer instead.

This. Turbo in Super feels incredible with the way it influences your turns and drift. It's also frustrating in a very satisfying way. It took me hours just to get down the mechanics to beat the first course, but by the time you get to Senior you're so familiar with the handling you could react to even a randomly-generated course.

If you don't like Super Hang-On it's because you gave up on it immediately. Or you played the choppy Genesis version which handles terribly. They really tried with that port but the Genesis was just not up to the task.

If you're using the "official" version, you have to open the from command line, something like this:

and it should tell you if any files are missing.
But you should really use a frontend like QMC2 or MAME Plus.

Amongst everybody who is terrible at the game, funny that. Unfortunately many people always seek to blame everything before themselves no matter the game however you'l notice decent players never do they just see it as challenge to adapt to like any other, it's a psychology thing.

Yeah cater to the whiners, meanwhilst find me any decent run on the saturn version that doesn't use default bullets. If you have some kind of eyesight issue fair enough but beyond that it's just excuses and scapegoating for poor play.

>even if it's clearly a flaw of the game
Subjective tbh personally i've never had an issue with it since day 1 of playing. I find the inconsistency of the birds a more problematic issue.

>People can adapt to even the worst design choices.
Good players do as i said and everyone else finds fault and moans thus getting no where.

>> No.2580691

>Subjective tbh
Of course it is, but when a game about dodging bullets makes those bullets tricky to spot many people will complain. That's the reason why a lot of bullet hell games use smaller hitboxes and bigger, brighter bullets. You can see the game not conveying that type of information as a challenge rather than a flaw, but in that case you can see just about anything a challenge rather than a flaw.

>> No.2580759

>>2580691
>That's the reason why a lot of bullet hell games use smaller hitboxes and bigger, brighter bullets
No it isn't the smaller hitbox idea came from Tsuneki Ikeda seeing Battle garegga and wanting even more bullets on screen, giving the player a higher sense of risk whilst actually being possible due to the small hitbox. It was an injected idea to progress a tired genre at the time into new territory and nothing more. Know your shmup history.

Come on. Do I really have to say this? There are two different versions for a reason, If you can't see the bullets on A, play B. There's nothing wrong with making these games more accessible to the wider audience. Just Pick the game that you like and have fun,
