Do you think we'll ever see another Mario game as bizarre/unique as Super Mario Land 2?

Probably not, unfortunately. Maybe, MAYBE if they were to make a game in which Mario and Bowser had to team up against a new common foe, SMRPG-style. This could be awesome for a platformer, giving it a more DKC-style feel.

Oh, geez, or how about if Mario and Wario teamed up?

It's not. It's just gonna give me thousands of unique levels to play easily and conveniently. I'm not saying it's groundbreaking or anything. Just gonna be cool. They should have done this years ago. The levels will also have a user rating system so finding the sweet ones will be easy.

Funny, I just beat this game again today. It's pretty sad that this game is better than any 2D Mario game made in the last ten years, which is really saying something about Nintendo's so-called "creativity". The entire New Super Mario Bros series is just as uninspired as FPSs that get churned out every year.
Super Mario Land 2 was truly a game with spark and imagination. It's a shame that Nintendo has gone down the drain for the most part, and is slowly being devoured from the inside by their new, young, and hip development team, which created the Tumblr-iest game ever, Splatoon.

I really wish we'd get a good old fashioned unique platformer from Nintendo again.

Nah, Wario is too antagonizing, and besides he's got Waluigi now.

Mario is too safe to be out there these days. Heck, even the RPG spinoffs, which were most known for creating entirely new worlds and characters, have been sterilized by the same standardization that's affected the main series games.

>>2576071
One nice thing about that is that the editor employs a '10 mario' rule. If you can't beat your level in 10 marios or less, then you can't publish it online.

Levels are also rated by percentage of how many people completed the level, so it's not like other fan-made things where standards vary wildly as to what is easy, what is hard, etc. (something I dislike about Osu! for example).

But as for the topic at hand, no, not as long as Miyamoto continues to insist that everything is fine, and not as long as the new generation continues to go along with what already exists, and not as long as the same-old same-old keeps selling and winning accolades. That's the toughest thing, is that even if they're boring, the new games are still good games, so you'll have trouble convincing people that things need to change.

Personally, I'm convinced that 2D platforming is dead, and that 3D platforming needs another chance but won't get it due to the burnout people still seem to feel about 3D platformers, and also because of how much effort it takes to do them right, and how much people will inevitably complain about the controls. In a world where games are wanted to mold to a common standard set of expectations, 3D platformers don't really have any place but that of ridicule. Maybe that ukelele game will change things, but I doubt it.

And also, I know it's not retro, but why hate on Splatoon? That's one of the best things they've done in at least 10 years.

Sorry but Mario Maker is proof that there won't be any more games as bizarre/unique as Super Mario Land 2

Not only does the game recycle enemies and themes from Mario 1, 3 and World but now Nintendo can't even be bothered to make new levels for you, now they want you to make the levels.

While a level editor would have been awesome in any of the last 10 years of 2d Mario game releases, and why they never released one in that time is beyond me, releasing an entire game that's just the level editor is just lazy at this point.

I miss the days when Mario went different directions, like in SMB2 USA and its bizarre enemies and levels (a level where you go through a door and climb up a waterfall, or you can drop 7 screens down and find another door?) Yes I know it's Doki-Doki panic but I consider it Mario canon and it's a damn good game, and very original.

>>2574564
Super Mario Galaxy was pretty unique but still stuck to a lot of the regular mario themes

>you now realize the last 10 years of 2d Mario rehashes could have all had a level editor included but nintendo never chose to include it so they could release it as a standalone game in a desperate effort to stay relevant

>you now realize a legend of Zelda dungeon editor is imminent

fun fact: The first Legend Of Zelda game was supposed to include a level editor so you could edit and save your labyrinths on the famicom disk system

Level editors have been around forever, and there's no reason you can't really include them with a game instead of making a whole game out of it. Megaman Powered Up had a level editor as part of the game, and they didn't have to release it standalone.

Fuck's sake, excitebike had a level editor all the way back in the 80's.

It just pisses me off that they could have released this years ago as part of Super Mario Bros. Wii or something but they're just now getting around to it, and it seems pretty desperate.

The Mario series has been standardizing all of its various sub-series to fit more closely with the NSMB series over the past two generations, with the exception of Mario Kart for some reason. If the Paper Mario series isn't allowed to utilize anything besides characters established in Super Mario World and the usual Plains/Desert/Forest/Lava areas we're not going to see the main platformers break away from it.

And even if the franchise was open to experimentation Super Mario Land 2 was probably the most extreme it'll ever get, since the game was a bridge between the core Mario platformers and the Wario Land series.

I get so tired of this shit.

I know it's fun to SAY that Mario Land 2 was innovative and imaginative, but how was it, really? It had very boring level design, terrible physics, and incredibly dull boss battles. It was an incredibly watered down Mario game.

Or are you hoisting this up as some lost bastion of innovation because it had a few enemies not found in Mario games? Like... pigs, and crows, a generic witch? Wow, how earth shaking. The mechanics certainly didn't do anything crazy, unless you count "he has a feather on his head because we can't do a palette change" to be a form of off-the-wall innovation. You guys speak as though this game DID something differently, when it didn't, unless you consider "a pale imitation" to be sufficiently different.

If anything, SML3 and the subsequent Wario Land games are far better examples of a "Mario" game that broke the mold.

>Do you think we'll ever see another Mario game as bizarre/unique as Super Mario Land 2?

it's called Wario Land 1. that was far more bizarre than SML2.

>> No.2585920

>>2585303
I can't speak for everyone else but I'm talking about the stylistic differences, not about innovation or even the quality of the games.
Compared to the usual flavor of Mario enemies, level types and bosses Super Mario Land 2 was pretty different than the rest.

People are getting bored of the "world 1 is plains with goombas and koopas, world 2 is a desert with pokeys, world 3 is a seashore with cheep cheeps and bloopers" formula the series has been trapped in. Not because the quality of the games has been decreasing but because we've seen it dozens of times and it's growing stale.
The feudal Japan level in 3D World wasn't some brilliant revolutionary setting for a videogame but it felt very fresh to see it in a Mario game, and it ended up being one of the most memorable levels in the game as a result. Same with the final world, which decided to go for a neon carnival motif instead of a volcano one.

>> No.2585938

>>2585923
I'm not saying window dressing is a substitute for innovation or good gameplay.
I'm just saying that it'd be nice to see Nintendo play around with the aesthetics or themes a bit more.

Galaxy 2 is easily a better game than the first Galaxy but there's a reason "Mario in space" was way more hyped and fondly remembered than "Mario in space again."

>> No.2585945

>>2585938
You have a fair point, but in the case of SML2 I don't think the new locales really did anything. Sure, the tiles change from trees in one level to Lego bricks in another, but they don't really affect the gameplay--it's a standard left-to-right slog either way. The different worlds didn't really feature anything that make the worlds distinct aside from the tilesets. In my experience, at least, the visuals ultimately facilitated a letdown because they suggested a new experience but didn't deliver.
