So did the Sega Saturn have anything cool? I hear so much praise for Megadrive and Dreamcast but nothing on Saturn.

I've got Vampire Savior for Saturn recently.

>> No.2572046

>>2572035
Not the guy you're talking to, but Capcom's ports were generally solid because they used the 4mb ram cart extension. But the SNK version of it was only 1meg of ram and so some of their games like Samurai Showdown IV have slowdown.

They were all better than the shitshow that was the PS1 trying to run 2D fighters and the like, but not quite perfect on all fronts either.

>> No.2572051

It's pretty well known all the arcade ports except for like the Darkstalker games have slow down. Other are missing frames of animation.

Real Bout Special uses the RAM cart, but as far as I can tell it isn't missing any animation frames, or suffer slowdowns.

Also, ports of games that don't use the RAM cart, like Street Fighter Alpha 2, are still pretty damn good. SFA2 is missing a few animation frames (although not as bad as the PS1 version), but it still feels a lot like the arcade. Plus I prefer the Saturn OST of Alpha 2 to the arcade.

Like, okay, it's fair to say it's not arcade perfect, but it's definitely not shitty, and it was the best way to play these games at home back in the day, and it's still a good option today if you don't want to emulate/buy the CPS board.

>> No.2572310

>Please spot the slowdown for me

That video plays through the game with Wolverine, who is possibly the smallest character in the game. It still slows down at many parts, like whenever Doom does his gauntlet laser.

Try playing through with Blackheart or Juggernaut, and then you'll have way more slowdown. Or have Blackheart fight Juggernaut, and the entire fight will go at half speed.

And this is not even mentioning that fact that this recording was made without the RAM expansion, so it has tons of animation missing. The game can use the 1mb expansion, and if you use it, it slows down MUCH more often. Even doing a single punch will give you slowdown. Marvel Super Heroes was notorious for this.

>>2572051
X-Men COTA drops frames if the action gets hectic, Marvel Super Heroes slows down, Metal Slug slows down, X-Men vs SF and Marvel vs SF both just drop frames.

This is on top of X-Men COTA and Metal Slug not having all frames from the arcade. I'm not sure how Marvel Super Heroes (with the RAM cart) holds up in that department, but the game runs like ass with the RAM cart so it doesn't really matter.

Darkstalkers indeed doesn't slow down or drop frames at any point, I think. But it's probably because it has much smaller characters.

>>2572043
>It's amazing and can't tell any difference with the arcade version other than the sound which sounds a bit different.

Funny thing, Vampire Savior uses CD Audio for the levels, ADPCM recordings for the endings, and it uses the Saturn synth for many shorter in-game tracks like the character select, VS screen, and character win-quotes. And the RAM cart is mostly holding all of those and the menus and character select screens, not just character animation.

They really optimized the hell out of that game. Makes me wonder if they could have done the first Marvel vs Capcom on the Saturn.

>> No.2572318

>>2572105
SF Zero 3 was one of the ports that was NOT shit. It was optimized the hell out of, like Vampire Savior was.

Earlier titles like X-Men COTA or Marvel Super Heroes, those were much worse off.

I just wish they put in more game options in Vampire Savior and both of the VS games (XvsSF and MSHvsSH). All they have are Arcade mode, VS mode, and Option mode. Vampire Savior has the EX options but that's it. Compare it to SF Zero 3 and even 2 which have like 8 modes of play, plus galleries.

No one is talking about emulating the Saturn. You can play backups via modchips, swap trick, an SD card loader, two other SD card loaders still in development, or flash your action replay with a loader that allows booting original games without a modchip (but you'll still need to swap trick to load the flasher utility).

>The screen is the wrong size

The screen size is only 32px smaller, but the "arena width" is the same, you just get your character more obscured if they walk into a corner.

>and there's lag with some combos

Show me a combo that lags in Vampire Savior or SF Zero 3.

A few posts above I was actually pointing out why these games are not arcade perfect. I never said they were. But some of them are damn fine ports, especially considering their age and that they come on a CD medium (which you can't stream sprites off of).

Seriously, show a cheaper home port of SF Zero 3 from 1999, that is as accurate as the Saturn version. It is even more accurate than some later ports, like the Dreamcast one.
