We each tell what the rarest old vidya we own.
Can also tell how you got it.
Mine is Wild guns for Snes, came with the Snes I bought at a flea market and came with 40 other games.

Picture is not mine.

Do you know that if there's thousands of something and it's easily available, that's "common" and not "rare"? I collect records, and you know what's rare? A private pressing, maybe a few hundred hand numbered copies. 1963 OEM VW parts are rare. Pre-war Martin D45 guitars are rare. Tigers are more rare than many, many video games. That's rarity.

>> No.2569430

How hard is it for you to understand that there are varying degrees of rarity? There are fewer copies of Wild Guns than the average SNES game. Therefore, it is rarer than the average snes game. If you have to be a complete autist about it, you could call it semi-rare. What stupid world do you live in where something can only be "common" or "rare" and there's no middle ground between your two black-and-white categories?

Let's say Donkey Kong Country sold over four million copies (it did). Now let's say Mega Man X3 sold about 40,000 (it did). MMX3 is relatively rare compared to the millions of DKC, but it's not actually rare by any definition. You can still easily buy copies of MMX3, CIB like new even. Rarity means just that, it's difficult to find and not easily available by traditional means. Nintendo World Championship is rare, prototypes are rare, certain unlicensed stuff is rare; Wild Guns and Klonoa are not fucking rare.

Or are we talking about some dumb made up "rarity list"? That shit is way more autistic than using words correctly.

Rarity isn't just determined by the amount of copies that were created. It's also determined by the demand vs the amount that are available. So you could have 100k copies in existance and if 250k people want it, that in turn increases it's value and makes it rarer to obtain.

Nope, that's probably the actual Nintoaster's lack of heatsinks/vents. This is without looking at the internal system of the casemod, but if you play any game for a long period of time with something covering the vents, it'll start to smell. Also, this cartridge is among the minority that actually plays Alfred N The Fettuc and Jigsaw.

It was released as part of an MTV contest. The contest was instantly forgotten about because at the time MTV was always having a million contests and the games is crap but not in a way that is ridiculous like say cheetah men 2.

Years ago I was buying industrial shelving for my garage off a toy store that was going out of business. Behind some of the shelving were the dustiest 4 sealed copies of battletoads for nes you've ever seen. I bought them for a buck a piece in 2004. Wiped the dust off. Perfect factory sealed sealed boxes. They sit in my closet these days collecting dust.

It's upsetting to think I owned a SNES and Megadrive, and didn't even have a lot of games, but took really good care which games to buy. So even though I had a relatively small collection then, in hindsight I had ataste for the games that would really get retro value. But I practically gave it all away.
(Secret of Mana, Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage 1 & 2, Ecco the Dolphin, Chrono Trigger w. converter to play the US version on a PAL machine).
I'm not a collecter at all, and rarest thing I own now probably is a copy of Suikoden or Azure Dreams, but emulating aside, I'd sure be nice if I had still owned them, even if I'm not a collector.
OW,
Sorry for blogging.

I'm not saying that games in high demand should be automatically be labeled as rare. I'm saying that games that are in high demand but are limited in supply can be scarce/rare. Hence, supply vs demand. If the game is still being made and it's in high demand, then obviously it's initial availability may make it scarce but will increase with time as more are released. But for a game that is no longer being made, availability that will only decrease with time, and has a high demand, then yes. It can and will become rare/scarce as price, availability, and demand dictate. Trying to argue that it's not is preposterous.

By your logic every game or object is rare once it stops being in production.

How would you guys define rarity when it comes to games? What is the upper limit on production run before you move something from uncommon into rare? Or does the fact that it was produced and widely available automatically make it not rare?

Some are clearly rare, the things that are hard to confirm even exist beyond assumption and seeing one sold every year or two (or even less frequently) or knowing that someone does indeed have one or two (prototypes and unreleased games and the like), things that were only available in strictly limited quantities (limited prize giveaways), and things that were recalled (like Stadium Events) or otherwise had their availability drastically reduced for one reason or another. Beyond those, what would you consider rare? Or would you only consider the things I previously mentioned to be rare, and the rest as simply uncommon?

>> No.2579681

>>2579310
No. Logic would dictate that if the demand is higher than the supply when it's out of production, then it can become rare. And I'm not the Earthbound guy,. But I do agree, I don't care.

Anything that had extremely low print runs in your region (<= 15,000 or so, for the entirety of USA and Canada in NTSC-UC for instance) is pretty "rare" in that you were probably lucky if your local store even got a copy, let alone a few. Games like Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Little Samson, Mr Gimmick and Rule of Rose usually fit this category. There can also be extraneous circumstances, like they were released late in the consoles lifespan and basically had no interest since people had moved onto the next one.

Then there is stuff that would be considered legitimately rare, things that are virtually unobtainable to the public. Developer prototypes, Giveaways/Rewards like Nintendo World Championships carts, stuff that got pulled from store shelves and destroyed (like Stadium Events (which can simply be played as World Class Track meet)) are genuinely rare, and quite obviously, command ludicrous prices.

But, basically, if theres one available on eBay, its not exactly rare, but it does teeter that Uncommon/Rare boundary.

I think again, if its print run was less then 20,000 its pretty rare. You have to assume some were destroyed due to negligence or generally just lost to the ages.

Guys, was the US version of super adventure island II a legit uncommon/rare title?

It is fucking 80-120 USD loose now on fucking shitbay!

And it used to be $20 there when i bought it!

As for how i got my copy, true story:

Back in 2011, i bought a nice looking SNES, with no cables because it was the only way i could got one for $12, then i went to a local store with some guys which i bought games before, and told them about my SNES, and guess what, they told me i can choose a game i want from the shelf, and those games were at 60-80 pesos (basically 5-6 USD), and guess what game they just happen to had there!?

Fun fact, it took me a long time to get the cables of that snes, and it didn't fucking work, most games had glitches and some of them didn't even booted, and no, it wasnt because of the titles themselves, per example, every time i booted super mario kart on that snes, it crashed as long as the mode 7 effects started, and so on, aladdin refused to pass the first cut-scene of the intro, among other shit!

so i took the snes back and had to fight tooth and nail to get my money back, and then i got another SNES, which also didn't work either!

finally i got this humble snes mini, which worked, thank fucking lord!

Yeah, and with some things it can be hard to determine what is available. If people do not treat their common things with care and they get destroyed or otherwise lost over time, they could conceivably become more scarce down the road than their currently less common brothers.

Pic is not mine, but I'd fucking love to get those Rockman protos.

You and me both. I had a small collection, but most were must-have titles. If I'd just stuck them in the closet to gather dust, instead of liquidating them for dimes on the dollar...

My local gaming (/v/ and /tg/) shops have display cases with old cartridges in them. Even the crap titles have unreal sticker prices on them, but I've seen people come in looking for these 3rd-rate titles, and pay that price.

I don't know if that's they've just never heard of emulation, they're intimidated by the l33t haX0r skills required to load a ROM vs push a console switch, or they're hipster fucks and this their version of vinyl records.

he obviously meant, readily avaiable and priced around the average value for that kind of product

so yeah Klonoa is uncommon, but Wild Guns isnt rare at all, its just sought after, but always readily avaiable for little over the average for nontrash, unlike the $15 games that ppl just buy to fill up shelves

since even a hypothetical single produced copy of mother3(U) could still be readily avaible for whoever wants to pay $3000 for it, but still rare by definition, since its unique.

Do systems count? Here's my Heavy Sixer.

A friend of a friend bought a boxed Atari 2600 at a convention a few weeks ago, and it just so happened to contain a Heavy Sixer, even though the box showed a 4-switch model.

When he got home he claimed it "didn't work", so I offered to trade my 4-switch Atari (with RCA to coax adapter) for his. He got that one working so I keep this one, which actually works fine.

He was trying to plug the RF jack into the composite port on the TV.

It's better to be thought a fool than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt.

Ad hominem is attacking the person instead of the position of their argument. Like you just did. It literally means "to the person".

Rather than counter their position in the discusstion you attack their character which is generally a sign of desperation when losing an argument because you can't support your own position.
