I loved PE1 and then PE2 came and they just had to ruin the entire experience with clunky controls and pre-rendered scenery that change with each step you take (which is in itself not too much of a problem, but the game freezes for a split second every time it changes).

Also, Aya's powers are not nearly as interesting in PE2

I never played any of the PE games. I'm currently playing FFIX. I just replayed FFVII. Afterwards I'm going to play Dragon Quest VII. I like FFIX so far, but I wish there were more battles and less story.

There's no real conclusive evidence beyond anecdotal, but it is likely the laser will burn out eventually just due to regular wear and tear. I have a SCPH1001 that still works fine, though. Fortunately laser assemblies aren't expensive or difficult to replace.

I found it pretty easy to do it by ear, listening for when the motor speeds up. After you do it a few dozen times it's second nature.
