Holy fuck do I love this design.

Battle Mania Daiginjou is incredible but really expensive. If you have $300 to spare or a flash cart or whatever you really need to play it.

This. Thunder Force IV (Lightening Force) is pretty damn awesome, and the whole series comes highly recommended.

MUSHA and Gaiares are probably my favorites.

>> No.2559578

>>2559442
Musha, Truxton, Hellfire, Thunderforce 2,3,4, Gaiares, Sagaia(Darius 2), Panorama Cotton, Zero Wing, Curse, Gain Ground, Gleylancer, Gynoug, and Phelios are all I can think of.

I've played most of the 50+ Mega Drive/Genesis schmups so I'll chip in with some opinions.

As far as Toaplan goes, the game I enjoy the most is Fireshark. I think it's a better vertical shooter than Truxton, even. Truxton has some difficulty balance issues. A lot of the other Toaplan games also have port issues of one kind or another e.g. Grindstormer. Fire Shark has none of these problems.

The majority of MD schmups are horis and Thunderforce 4 is great to look with an awesome soundtrack, but I enjoyed Whip Rush and Gynoug a lot more. There are a lot of sloppy arcade shmup conversions and mediocrity, but those two games are bona fide console exclusives and feel very satisfying to play through. I would take those two over any of the Thunderforce games.

Another hori that stands out is Super Fantasy Zone. It's very colourful and looks more like a SNES game, definitely not another run of the mill hori.

Namco's Phelios and Dangerous Seed are easy but I replay them pretty often. Phelios has the Greek theme which I enjoy, whereas Dangerous Seed is compelling partly due to the soundtrack and pacing.

This game isn't fully compatible with non-model 1 Genesis. Better to emulate if you don't have one.

>> No.2559806

>>2559442
Eliminate down is my pick, game is amazing and one of the few shooter on the system to have what i'd call "arcade" difficulty. Eliminate down is also great albeit a little easy. Btw for anyone emulating i recommend trying hazeMD which uses the mame interface and allows over clocking.... Thunderforce iv with zero flicker or slowdown like the saturn port is awesome.

I never knew that! (I have model1 and the game). I'd collect the game anyway.

my ass, I've beaten it on my model 2.

And you were listening to the music at PAL speed. I've played it on four different consoles (model 1 "hi def", model 1 non-"hi def", model 2, and CDX). It only plays at the proper speed on a "hi def" Model 1.

I prefer a bit of slowdown in my shooters, thank you.

>> No.2560803

Oh well you didn't say it was at pal speed
I read
>isn't fully compatible
as not able to complete

>> No.2560815

>>2560803
Because its a weirdly specific sound bug that's easier to explain as not "not fully compatible" than try to explain in detail.

slap fight

>> No.2560881

>>2560815
You seemed to do just fine giving a little elaboration.
"Not fully compatible" infers the possibility of random crashes, random glitches, or something of the like- not a sound bug that anyone who isn't autistic or has dual US/Yurop citizenship will never notice.

>> No.2561035

Only one I ever played is Wings of Wor. It's pretty good.

If you have the CD, try Silpheed.

And if you want a good laugh, there's Sewer Shark.

No mention of Battle Mania: Daiginjou?
This game seriously pushes the system's hardware in graphical effects and is possibly the only title to compete with Thunder Force IV guitar instruments.

While some would say these are not top-tier(at the kindest), if you want a change of pace from all the popular choices, you could try these:
Arrow Flash
After Burner 2(I'm REALLY surprised no one mentioned that, if only for nostalgic purposes)
Burning Force
Caliber 50(admittedly, it's more of a rungun, but you fight a giant fucking turtle as a boss!)
Empire of Steel
Forgotten Worlds(another one I can't believe wasn't mentioned)
Granada(not an auto-scroller shmup, but a very fun and solid game...still qualifies as a shmup in my book)

So I was playing Sagaia, right? But my dryer broke and I'm a lazy asshole and my room with my Genesis in it got super fucking messy to the point where I didn't want to spend time in it

Then like six months later I finally cleaned the fucking place and sat down to play my first game of Sagaia in half a year.

I got two levels farther than I ever had BEFORE EVEN LOSING ONE SHIP.

What the fuck happened? Was I secretly training in my sleep?
