I remember the first time I ever found out about this thing
I was seven years old in 2000. My only knowledge of games up until that point was gameboy and dos games on pc. I knew sony made televisions at that age, but I had no idea Sony made video games. It was crazy.

I was at my uncles house one day and he was working in his garage. And that's when I layed eyes on it. I think the first PlayStation game I ever saw might have been Ape Escape or Klonoa and it was amazing.

And the console itself felt amazing. Even being seven years old and knowing next to nothing about videogames, there was something about that original playstation that felt hi-fi. The boot up sound, the cd's, the graphics. It was magical

The first PS game I played was FFVII. The game and console were a joint Christmas present for my brother and I. He had a Genesis before that which we both played regularly, so on the PS it was a given that we'd switch off, taking turns with the controller.

That opening scene where the camera just keeps pulling out further and further from the city blew our tiny little minds. We each had our own save file for the game and were so enamored with it that we'd watch the other person play even after having gone through the same content ourselves. It was about the only time we got along and could talk about the same stuff.

Well, we thought, you’d spend a lot of time looking at “Sonic’s Ass.” Aside from the difficulties of identifying with a character only viewed in posterior, it seemed cool. But we worried about the camera, dizziness, and the player’s ability to judge depth – more on that later.

I think it's interesting how many new design sensibilities the early 3D game designers had to sort out.
