What's the best way to de-yellow an snes? Right now I'm using %3 hydrogen peroxide mixed with clorox. How often should I apply the solution and how long should I do it for?is there a better way?

>> No.2549261

>Clorox
Oh shit nigga, wtf are you doing?

>> No.2549262

The only way is an ugly way: SAND IT DOWN

The surface of the plastic has changed color, and no cleaner will de-yellow it.

The only real way is to sand off the top yellowed layer, which usually makes a mess.

>>2549259
See how that one has a part that hasn't yellowed? Find one that has parts that haven't yellowed and swap the good ones from it.

If they haven't yellowed after all these years, they probably won't ever, right?

>> No.2549283

why not get a custom paint job?

>> No.2549360

Ok so I was messing around with chemicals and I think I might have got some in the cartridge slot it will turn on but it won't show anything I've tryed cleaning the cartridge slot with rubbing alcohol but it didn't help, I think I might have fried the motherboard by getting chemicals on it
Shit....shit....I just bought this 3 days ago for 25 dollars

>>2549360
Well fucking hell what did you expect? You're supposed to also buy a security bit, take the console apart, and only treat the plastic shell. I hope you learned your lesson here, mate.

Possibly one of the dumbest things I've ever read.

>> No.2549378

Ok I just submerged it in a sink full of water and the water came out all cloudy now that it's clean I'm gonna let it dry out inside my car for 2 hours before I test it again.

>> No.2549381

Since OP clearly doesn't know how to retrobrite, here's how.
- Buy a bottle of Hydrogen-Peroxide; 3% is pretty typical.
- Buy a clear transparent plastic tub.
- Place the plastic shell of what you want to brighten in the tub
- Dump in the entire bottle of HP, then add water until everything is submerged
- If you have a UV lamp, place it under that for about a day.
- If you don't have a UV lamp, place it out in the sun in the morning and let it sit all day, since it's summer in in the northern hemisphere right now this is an ideal time to use this method.

>> No.2549387

Oh I suppose I should mention that I added vinegar and baking soda and corn starch to the mix then covered the system with it then submerged it and now it's drying and no I'm not dumb enough to try plugging it in for the next 2 hours.

And even this is only a temporary solution, the machine will get yellowed again over time. In a matter of months.

The only way to de-yellow them permanently is to give them a paintjob.

This is why I prefer black coloured consoles over white ones. Yellowing is not a problem for those.

>> No.2549407

>>2549390
>matter of months
Incorrect. It takes years to yellow again.

>> No.2549412

Well it's dead,I just plugged it back in and while it turns on nothing shows up on screen. Why did I have to be an idiot today....

>> No.2549417

Is there any way to replace the cartridge slot? Or is that not the problem?

Lesson learned: Electronics and liquids don't mix.

>> No.2549425

>>2549407
It's actually fairly dependent on a bunch of variables. It can yellow again in weeks if you are or live with a smoker (firsthand experience with that.)

>> No.2549434

I'm surprised OP unplugged it before sending it to a watery, corn starchy grave. Seriously, what thought process was happening that would lead you to conclude that it would be smart to mix liquids and electronics?

Yes they mix fine. That is, if they aren't plugged in and allowed to fully 100% dry before powering them up again. That being said, obviously you shouldn't retrobrite something with the motherboard still inside, nor should you be getting electronics wet unless you are intentionally cleaning them.

Paint job doesn't sound too bad, or better yet, just play the games on the console regardless.

There is this cleaning solution made from orange peel, shit is amazing they use it as industrial cleaner. It will get clean tar off of your car like it is some infomercial magic. You can get a tiny spray bottle but its not cheap. Will restore anything to new.

>> No.2550774

Yeah this is a horrible idea. The texture of the plastic will be completely gone and you'll be left with a smooth, scuffed up SNES. The whole purpose of retrobrite is to make it look original.

Smoking is a different kind of discoloration. It deposits tar from the smoke on the surface.

SNES yellowing is a chemical change in the plastic itself.

>> No.2551784

This actually.

If you're playing on an actual SNES in 2015 then you're probably into the whole retro collecting thing. In which case you're essentially into a hobby based around antiques and let me hip you to something that's generally huge int hat world. People love patinas because it's one of the things that's near impossible to fake flawlessly and thus is a hallmark of the item in question's true age.

All the people who go through great lengths to "restore" their SNES units are doing the same thing as someone who buys and antique table and then strips the original lacquerer off.

>> No.2551956

The parts that go yellow do so because they had to add frame retardant materials to the plastic as a safety feature. The fucked up the mixtures some parts manufactured before they realised they'd fucked up will always yellow. Though parts that haven't yellowed by now are probably made from later plastics and will be fine forever.

The only solution is to buy a whole new unit or parts from units that never yellowed. You can't bleach it out you fuckwit.

My SNES is yellowed so I just hacked that fucker to bits to ignore region locks and change other shit to play games better.

It's not a collectors item it's a fucking games console play it and forget about the color asshole.

Had the wife toss the SNES in with a load of laundry. Now the colors are more vibrant than ever and somehow it started being able to play Genesis games.
