These are the ones I would post. Frog Bell's literally proto-Link's Awakening, Seiken Densetsu is Seiken Densetsu and Daikatana is somehow a fucking cool little game.

there's a crystalis game on gameboy but I heard it's not a very good port

I was going to make a thread asking basically the same thing OP.

To be more specific, are there any games that capture the feeling of world exploration as well as the GBC Zeldas? There's something really satisfying about steadily filling in each tile on the map.

They butt fucked the music so that it's much worse quality, *and* it's also new music which doesn't fit with the game like the original does

The top-down view is also way zoomed in, which is really annoying

Overall, just play NES version.

I tried Ninja Taro and I really don't like it. It plays slow and the boss fights are shit.

>Strong recommendations
Bomberman Quest is a Zelda clone, but the pacing is a little too slow for me.

Ninja Taro and the Rolan's Curse series seem to be based on the same engine. I didn't really care for any of these games.

Final Fantasy Adventure - Pretty much a Zelda clone based on elements from Final Fantasy.

Ultima: Runes of Virtua series - Top-down dungeon raiding in an effort to collect runes and equipment upgrades. The dungeons involve a lot of puzzle solving.

>Weak recommendations
Atomic Punk and Bombman GB are top-down action puzzle games. There's a chance they may be appealing to classic Zelda fans.

Gargoyle's Quest - Alternates between top-down map exploration, and Zelda II-style side-view battle and dungeon sequences. Some people call it a Zelda II clone.

Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy Legend series - Just because they're top-down. They have random battles though.

Something about top down adventure games on the Gameboy is so cozy. They knew they couldn't impress mechanically so they just excel at what they are and do their best to be crative about it. They feel very pure.

NES didn't really get a huge variety of adventure games just because they're werent popular yet, so I feel like where the GB is where the "design over power" philosophy came through and let this humble little games shine

I agree. GB/C is my console of choice for that reason. Specially GBC... At the tail end of it's life they were really pushing it with amazing games like Mario Tennis and Shantae.

>I feel like where the GB is where the "design over power" philosophy came through and let this humble little games shine
This applies to the system as a whole. The GB is easily my favorite system just because they couldn't do a whole lot, so they perfected what they could do with a minimalist philosophy that produces games that are purely games and have no qualms about it.

>> No.2549886

I bet Japan still produced graphical adventures for it. But I agree, I love the simplistic game design.

You kind of have to separate your feelings for movies as well as for licensed games on other platforms with licensed GB games. Oftentimes the game is wholly different from the movie, or the devs took the opportunity to do their own outlandish thing with a game and then slap a skin of the license over it later. This makes it more variable, and you don't have to assume it's terrible like licensed games on any other console.

Even then, the low resolution and four shades mean that even they have to have been cut down to a streamlined experience. And it's not to say games are forced to look bad; on the contrary, the visuals can still be astounding. The parallaxing effect in Legend of the River King always blows me away, and the pseudo-3D of Dragonheart is great too.
Link's Awakening makes great use of the shading available to it as well.

Croc 2 is a top down adventure game and actually got better reviews than the PS1 version. Also, Adventures of the Smurfs.

Quest brian's journey is similar but more rpg. I think the combat system is fun. However the rest of the game is pretty mediocre.
