Decisions, decisions, decisions..
Which did you choose?
Or did you buy them both?

>> No.2545401

Both.

>>2545401
Same. Regretted getting FFVIII because it really sucked. Oh well.

>> No.2545405

Neither. But I would have bought both, first based on positive word, second based on the brand name.

What was the price for a Dreamcast and a PS1 on launch date?

>> No.2545449

>>2545432
$200 for DC, $300 for PS1 if I recall correctly.

>> No.2545450

Final Fantasy 8. It was my introduction to the series. Fuck you I liked it.

2 years later, 2001, K-Mart had a liquidation sale on Dreamcasts. Got one brand new for $50.

>> No.2545507

Too bad Bleemcast didn't support Final Fantasy VIII.

>> No.2545581

I bought an used import Dreamcast for $40 and pirated FF8. Suck it, industry.

>> No.2545593

FFVIII is probably my favorite installment of the series. So I guess, take a guess which I bought.

I traded in all of my PS1 stuff toward a Dreamcast. I got Ready 2 Rumble, Sonic Adventure and SoulCalibur on launch day.

Were you happy you'd done it?

>> No.2545674

Not at the time because I loved the DC but I did later regret trading in some of my PS1 favorites and re-bought some of them when I got a PS2.

>> No.2545676

>>2545674
Or I should say I was happy with my decision at the time. The Dreamcast is tied with the GameCube as my all time favorite console.

I traded in my N64 for one, though not on launch day. Turned out to be a very good decision, although I did miss playing Goldeneye.

Yeah I was in high school when the Dreamcast came out and the leap in graphics was just mind blowing at the time. It was the console that was finally able to produce graphics that were just as good as arcade games. I've got to look around at my parents' house for my old launch day DC t-shirt.

I would have been disappointed if I traded in all my PS1 shit for the Dreamcast. Of the games you listed only Soul Calibur was genuinely good and the Dreamcast was pretty much an enhanced port machine aside from a handful of decent-good games.

Being able to play backups without a modchip makes DC king.

>> No.2545937

I chose ff8. I liked it, but not as much as ff7. And I liked ff9 even less than ff8. Never bought a dreamcast as I was still into ps1 until early 2000s playing games like vagrant story and not rich enough for multiple consoles. No games appealed to me either.

I was (and am) a more serious collector but I did trade PS1 stuff for that $40 import Dreamcast and a ton of import games (at $5 each) I remember trading in Breath of Fire 3, Intelligent Qube and Ogre Battle on it. I still don't regret it even though the PS1 stuff I traded in is worth more today. The experience was a huge part of it - plus if Shenmue keeps going up I have like 5 copies of it. I loved it so much I couldn't bear to see one being sold for $2 into a possible bad home.

It was $199 at launch. I got one a couple months later with Soul Calibur and Sega Rally 2 and 2nd controller.

>Glorious marathon sessions of Soul Calibur with about 5 buds, passing controllers around. It was fun because even button masher bros could still win matches. Good times.

FFVIII, the last FF of the PS generation I bought that I didn't regret.

I still look at my Vivi preorder doll and silently weep for that stinker that was FFIX. Oh well it was made up for with *NOT RETRO* FFXII *END NOT RETRO*.

Not to mention once you had the Dreamcast you could get pretty much any game you wanted for the cost of burnable media.

Granted a stack of 50 CD-Rs cost like $35 for cheap shit and like $60 for decent shit.

>> No.2546679

Neither. I was playing Starcraft on my PC and Chrono Trigger on my SNES.

>> No.2546689

>>2545449

On their respective launch dates, yes. But when the DC came out the PSX was down to $150, and had tons of great shit on it already. So it was still the better choice.

I always laugh a little when people claim that the PS2 killed the DC here in America, because the PSX had it's best ever line up during the DC's short life span here. The fucking thing sold in droves while the DC had a successful launch, then basically nothing after that because "no gaems.". Unless you wanted a Neo Geo and couldn't afford one, the DC was basically an oddity or something to play the latest sports titles on. So it was worthless.

The PS2 was more or less the last nail in the coffin of the DC, but it had it's "shortage" so it wasn't exactly killing it in sales wither. It honestly was the PSX that killed the DC. Not to mention the SNES, N64 and Saturn as well, lol.

PSX is the console responsible for killing off the most competition, including ending Sega's pathetic hardware run.

It ended the 16 bit era, it killed off all 32 bit competition and then it killed the first "next gen" console off as well. It's the single greatest thing ever made by human hands, honestly.

>> No.2546691

I didn't have a PlayStation in 1999 and my parents were not going to buy me another Sega system after we got the Saturn in 1996 and it became nearly impossible to find games for it by late 1997.

I guess around that time I was super excited for Pokemon Yellow.
