What are you playing?
Any underrated games to recommend?
Your favorite NES games?

NES thread. It's just me, or NES is skipped and not loved by many? People know most popular games, like Mario or Contra, maybe some shmup, but that's all. Does NES have any hidden gems? To be honest, I'm not an expert when it comes to NES - started my adventure not so long time ago because it was only console which I didn't own.

Let's hope for nice and friendly chat.

What rock have you been living under? The NES is one of the most popular consoles ever made. You've nonetheless come to the right place if you want to have a discussion about all things NES.

>What are you playing?
That I haven't already finished: Bard's Tale, Dungeon Magic, Nobunaga's Ambition, Trojan, Ultima: Exodus and Quest of the Avatar.

>Any underrated games to recommend?
8 Eye's - It's a Castlevania clone set in a post-apocalyptic future. The level design can get a bit monotonous, and enemies are notoriously hard to evade. It's worth checking out if you need more of a CV fix.

Dungeon Magic: Sword of the Elements - Maybe the closest thing the NES got to Elder Scrolls. It's a first-person, real-time RPG. Map exploration takes a little getting used to, because you're not always confined in wall mazes. Some areas consist of vast open spaces with no clear markers.

Trojan - An insanely difficult platformer in the same vein as Ghosts 'n Goblins. If GnG is down your alley, definitely give Trojan a try.

Battle of Olympus - A blatant rip-off of Zelda II, which is in fact what makes it such a great game.

Dig Dug II - The only home console port of this game I can find. I think it's leagues better than the original Dig Dug, but unfortunately it's overshadowed by the popularity of its predecessor.

Millipede - IMO, the best home port of this game, aside from playing an emulated arcade compilation.

Kung-Fu Heroes - Excellent co-op game. It's a top-down, arcade-style beat-'em-up set in China. It has a lot of features like bonus levels, weapons, power-ups and warp zones.

Snake Rattle and Roll, Solar Jetman, and the Wizards and Warriors series are great, although most of the proper underrated games have already been picked up by reseller scum, so what you'd be left with are mediocre but still enjoyable games, like Treasure Master, NARC, Mission Impossible, Beetlejuice, Castelian, Darkman (wonky but workable physics), Kid Niki, The Immortal, etc
>Your favorite NES games?
Battletoads, Snake Rattle and Roll, Monopoly, Gyruss, Mario series (doesn't really need to be said)

Right now I'm playing Startropics. Knocking it off the list of games I never beat as a kid. Finally kicked Dragon Warrior off that list last week.

Underrated gems, I vote Solstice, or Wizards and Warriors.

>>2544490
I just picked up Battle of Olympus a couple of weeks back, having never played it. I always remember that the ads made it look so awesome when I was a kid. I've only played a bit, and it's hard as balls. I get the feeling I'm missing something. I got lost in a Forrest where you keep ducking through trees and there are spiderwebs all over the place.

For the average person who only knows Mario and Contra and whatnot, the NES is THE console for hidden gems. I put the entire library on my GBA flashcart and when I'm bored, I go through and pick random titles that sound interesting. 6/10 times I find something decent. PAL friend here. This year I have been buying NTSC systems with Everdrives, and the NES is next on my list.

Is there a particular model that is preferred? I am choosing to stay away from Famicoms because of their controllers (short cables, plugged into the system interbally) and the top loader just doesn't look cool enough for me. Also, are refurbished/replaced pins bad?

NTSC NES lots are pretty expensive on eBay, but most of the consoles being sold alone aren't in the best condition.

it's an action platformer - a fucking good one!

you control 4 different characters, a kid that throws bells and can climb walls. a dragon that can fly for a short time and charge up a fireblast, a golem that can throw his fist in all directions and a mouse that's very fast, can climb walls and lay bombs

after the intro stages you can switch between all characters on fly and they all have their own health pool

apart from the amazing graphics (best NES graphics in my opinion) the boss fights are probably the coolest thing about little samson - all of them are very unique

the whole game reminds me of mega man, but simply better in many regards (sadly the music isn't as great as the mega man music - but only few games compare on that scale anyway)

I'm currently on a mission to beat all the Castlevania games in order. I just beat Simon's Quest for the first time after finishing the first one and I have to say, I actually kind of liked it. In fact, I liked it a lot. I'm more of an RPG guy anyways so I appreciated the attempt to flesh out a world to explore. I also like the idea of the monsters being stronger at night which, in a game like this, feels very appropriate. Does the gameplay become a little repetitive? Yes, but I still find it addicting. It's a shame that there wasn't a boss in every mansion. It sort of seems like this game was only half finished.

most likely your pin connector (in the NES) is either oxidized and/or bend so that no electric connection can be made

you can take it appart and use some rubbing alcohol to clean it (and if required some tweezers to bend them back in place - gently!)

you can also just generously apply some rubbing alcohol to a cartridge and repeatetly insert/eject it so that it cleans the pins in the NES a bit - might work and save you some time taking that thing apart

>I get what you're saying, the 16-bit era is more accessible but NES is obviously a good console.

I thought so too in the past - mainly because the only 8bit console I ever had was a master system + 2 games.
But the more I play the NES library, the more I love that toaster - there are some great games on there and they are even more accesible than 16bit games!
that's because 16bit era games expanded upon the genres that evolved during the 8bit era - so they generally have more features/gameplay-mechanics. they also use more buttons.

8bit games on the other hand are quite simple and often don't need any explanation at all for new players.
as a result 8bit games are more accessible than 16bit games imho.

>> No.2554504

Definitely.

I just think that maybe there's a barrier for entry for new retro enthusiasts, based on visuals.
Where as 16bit it bright, with more colors and smoother animations…

As a child of the 80's i'm often surprised at how good a lot of the NEs games look, when I go back and play them. But I think a lot of the millenials see the NES as I have always seen the previous generations (atari, intelllevision ect)

however - to me NES games look really nice. I can appreciate the "solid" look the games have (mostly one color backgrounds and so on)

still, the 8bit games use actual pixelart as we know it

the pre-crash era consoles (atari and so on) on the other hand don't. that's what seperates them and why I really can't warm up to atari 2600 games ... it just looks horrible to me.
I do like ASCII games though - heck, my favorite game is Dwarf Fortress - but that's somehow a different thing to me

maybe someone feels the same and can express it better than me
(english is a foreign language to me)

Anything from Compile, anything featuring Randar, few to no exceptions. A couple of those games may seem too similar for comfort (Gun-Nac/Gunhed/Zanac) but each has it's own benefit.
Compile had some Fantastic games for MSX and of course Golvellius on Master System but their NES games were always the best, Guardian Legend being the most obvious of Compile's gems.

Bucky O'Hare
Nobody else I know of has ever even heard of this game, but IMO, it's definitely one of the best NES games ever made and I spent hours and hours and hours playing it growing up. Even the music is damn good.

I kinda wanted to send a copy to Game Grumps or somebody to play so more people could see it, but I decided I didn't want to send them my only copy of my favorite game so I looked on eBay and found it's apparently kind of rare and just a used cartridge alone is like a hundred bucks... ~$750 if it were still sealed in the box.

Totally depends on whats in there.

If its mostly shovel ware a buck or two a game is usually the going rate for bulk. So 500-1500 is what you'll usually see people ask.

If theres a Bubble Bobble 2, Duck Tales 2, or something like that in there expect the price to inflate.

Its almost never worth it to buy bulk lots like that becasue a lot of the time the labels are fucked, or some of the games are busted anyways.

I'm just here to recommend one game that you really can't emulate right. You NEED a CRT and Zapper to get the full experience, either with the real cart or an everdrive.

The Lone Ranger. It's a solid platformer, like Castlevania with a six-shooter. But it really shines in the First-Person perspective fights. You use the controllers D-Pad to change your facing, and gotta do some quick and accurate shooting to succeed.

No one in the entire thread mentioned it. Which is a shame, since it's some quality classic Konami. Probably the best Zapper using game on the NES as well.

Picked my NES up on Friday.
Console. Power adaptor. Av cables. Official controller. Battle of Olympus. GOAL. WrestleMania challenge.
£45

Did I do good?

Was constantly giving me bad connection blink, but I opened her up and gave it a good.clean.amd raised the pins on the cartridge slot with a slight bend and now it reads all games flawlessly.

Already have a copy Mario bros (well 2 copies) and a second official controller I bought from gamestation for a quid each about a decade ago.

Would anyone recommend. The nes advantage joystick?

Baring in mind of course this was off a guy from work who is a collector and not some car boot sale random.

I beat all uk ebay prices compared to.a console without games, so there is that.

Appears there is a surplus of these in the US though. You get them mega cheap

I thought I was the only one who played this game.

Sadly, I was never able to get into Mega Man. Closest thing to Mega Man I'll play is Gargoyle's Quest.

Playing Ultraman Club 2 on my famicom. Not the best game I've ever played, but it's an RPG so whatever. :)

hey, might want to look at >>2565284 for a longer cable.

You can swap a NES controller board into the famicom controller shell, swap the red and yellow wires in there, and clip the connector off another famicom controller, soldering onto the NES one, and putting heat shrink over the solder spots to protect them, to connect it inside the famicom itself.

Now I want to play that, any Dungeon Crawler that isn't a PC port has my interest

>> No.2565385

>>2565359

I'm about 70% through the game myself. I think it's definitely an underrated title, but exploring the overworld is rather confusing due to all the open wilderness.

The magic system is really interesting. You collect runes, which are then combined to create spell effects. Water runes generally heal you, while fire runes form attack spells, and so forth. There are hundreds of possible combinations, so you have to experiment and write down any particularly useful combinations you discover. (Some of better ones are already documented online though)

I'm pretty sure Dungeon Magic is still only $5 on the reseller market, so there's no reason not to grab it.

A word of advice: If you don't get the manual, look up a copy online. The interface for equipping items and using commands other than "attack" is a little hard to figure out otherwise.

What a coincidence, I'm playing through 2 right now. It's really interesting seeing these JRPG elements we take for granted being considered innovations back then. Having a party with multiple characters in 2 was considered a really cool feature when compared to the single character you control in 1, for example.

Took my NES to my sister's house yesterday.
Wanted to show my 5 year old nephew the original Super Mario Bros as he likes playing the new ones on his 3DS.

He actually really enjoyed it and was happily focused on it for about an hour, despite not getting past the second level.

Really impressed me as I would have expected him to be disappointed with it compared to what he can play on his Android tablet and 3DS etc.

Good to see there is hope for the next generation to appreciate the history of video games from decades before they were born and the origins.

Not any guides I know of. But yes, your PAL NES controller can be used. Just clip the end, solder the famicom controller end on, using heat shrink tubing to insulate them. Then open the controller up and desolder the red and yellow wires, swapping their positions on the controller. Then it will work on your famicom.

Unlike Final Fantasy, the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest games (for a good while, anyway) were built around a trilogy. Frex, I, II and III are all in the same world (the Alefgard trilogy), and IV, V and VI are related (the Zenithia trilogy).

IIRC, III comes first in Alefgard, followed by I and II. Zenithia is played in order (IV, V, VI), though if you want to get a little more backstory you can get Dragon Warrior Monsters in before VI.

Stand right in front of him (like just outside of getting inside his hurtbox) and he'll do a tall jump over you, run under him and go back to standing right in front of him and whipping him. Very rarely he'll do a short jump or shoot fireballs, but you should have a large enough health advantage that it won't matter.
